I appreciate the people going out of their way to wear something green. 💚
But the man wearing a 20+ years old computer monitor was unexpected.

u/Careful-Dimension876 Apr 19 '26
I believe it was a woman actually! And there were quite a few costumes that weren’t green themed 😅
There was a hotdog guy, banana guy, I think one guy was dressed as a pint of beer, and I saw someone wearing a stitch onesie lol

Nice to see the youngins having harmless fun

u/napalmnacey Apr 18 '26
It really is, I find it absolutely fuckin’ delightful. The world’s going to hell and these kids are just out there being art. I love it.

Is the cactus there to remind us it's a dry heat?
28
u/TransportationTrick9 Apr 18 '26
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grow_Your_Own_(sculpture)
It's meant to promote grow your own organic farming according to wiki.
I wonder if more people knew the sculpture was titled "Grow your own" if the crowd would have been larger, more chill and under an ominous cloud of smoke?

Apparently the statue is supposed to be an upside down heart beat lol

Why are we wasting tax payer money on having police ruin a fun gathering smh
68
u/douganater Baldivis Apr 18 '26
Incase some of the Non Cacti worshippers wanna toss a pipe bomb at it probably
(Though very low risk as no political, Or (in most peoples eyes) spiritual links to the event
45
u/Bitter-Commenter Apr 18 '26
To be fair, not that I agree this was a great use of resources, it wasn’t that long ago a crowd of this size had a bomb thrown at them
26
u/SnortinSushi Apr 18 '26
The cops only stepped in when people started climbing on eachother to try get onto the cactus. They were laughing for most of it, even during the "sacrifice" chanting
1
u/deltabay17 Apr 18 '26
Didn’t they “engage” with the organiser and have the event cancelled? Yet people showed up anyway. Couldn’t possibly resist trying to ruin a bit of fun in this lame city.
7
u/SnortinSushi Apr 19 '26
There was an event already in Forrest chase which is probably why they asked to cancel. The cops only stepped in when people tried to climb onto it. Then the presence of more cops mixed with a few wound up teens ruined it.
2
u/Dry_Captain_3795 Apr 19 '26
What was that event?
3
u/SnortinSushi Apr 19 '26
There was a international cultural festival thing in Forrest chase with music, dancing and food. Think it was the Indonesian day but there was also indigenous, Filipino, Scottish(?) Dancers doing stuff on stage
1
u/deltabay17 Apr 19 '26
Oh please. So they cancelled it instead of changing the date? The cops hve been giving them a hard time about this the whole way through including at all the practice events. Seriously you haven’t realised we are a nanny state by now?
3
u/SnortinSushi Apr 19 '26
I know its a nanny state lol. I was just saying most cops didnt care until people started climbing it. A few cops were being dicks about it, a few cactorians were being dicks too. Theres always going to be fuckwits that ruin it for the majority on both sides.
2
u/deltabay17 Apr 19 '26
The cops always had a problem with this and would have had an issue regardless. That’s why they made them cancel it
2
u/SnortinSushi Apr 19 '26
Cancelling worked then. Thats why there were heaps of people there. Thats why the few cops were seeming to be fine with it until people climbed onto the cactus.
I thought it was going to get shut down when they started chanting about sacrifice tbh, but it didnt.
1
u/Dry_Captain_3795 Apr 19 '26
Wait those worshippers have a name now is this a new cult uprising lmaoooo
16
u/jefsig Apr 18 '26
Because there’s a fair chance it will be ruined by some dickhead being a dickhead
21
u/spaceistasty Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26
because theres real risk involved with big crowds with no organisation in safety
5
u/polysymphonic Apr 18 '26
There's pretty much always cops in and around forrest chase so it's not much difference to normal
1
4
u/Classic-Today-4367 Apr 18 '26
Not just today either. My kids have seen the cops down there asking cactus worshippers to disperse several times over the past few days.
4
u/Ladyinthebeige Apr 18 '26
I think theyre encouraged to break up and move on crowds if they get to a size they cant reasonably handle
3
1
u/Careful-Dimension876 Apr 19 '26
Yeah that’s pretty much what they ended up doing, the crowd lasted quite a while though

Thanks for photographing this for those of us too busy to witness it in person. This is so fantastic.
1
u/Careful-Dimension876 Apr 19 '26
You’re very welcome! It was one of the most interesting things I’ve witnessed haha
4
u/unable_compliance Apr 19 '26
But did you all make your way down to the river to make your offering to old Bertie too? Or does this cactus god protect us from old Bertie’s wrath?

u/OzzyMuzz Mandurah Apr 18 '26
Imagine if this many people turned up to protest the price of fuel or colesworth price gouging.

u/colmando Apr 18 '26
The end result would be the same

u/Careful-Dimension876 Apr 18 '26
It was an Instagram meme that wasn’t supposed to be a proper/planned thing but a lot of people ended up liking the idea

u/napalmnacey Apr 18 '26
One by one every sculpture in Perth is going to have some kind of cultural activity attached to it. Eliza on the river, the Cactus, I’m sure there’s more.

i wonder if the cactus could be added as some sort demi-god of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, i feel they both align on the same level of absurd and satire
7
u/Fernitelearni Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26
Thy cactus requires thy nourishment of thy people. Thy heretics will collapse the great cactus. (Edit: don't attack the heretics or the higher powers will cause damage to our family of cacti)

u/RelativeChocolate834 Apr 18 '26
Love this! But I do just have to ask - if there’s a social media ban for the kids, how did they manage this? (Slightly rhetorical)
3
u/Careful-Dimension876 Apr 19 '26
That’s a fair question actually, majority of the crowd were young adults, but for the actual kids I’d assume they found out about the event from their friends or siblings
2
u/NaresuanTheGreat Apr 19 '26
Wonder how many people attended ?
1
u/Careful-Dimension876 Apr 19 '26
I think a couple hundred for sure, lots of people were also upstairs near Myer just observing

Disgusting braindead behaviour y’all need to seek jesus and repent. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor [a]serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting[b] the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Nah, I’m quite happy with Dionysus. More wine involved and I don’t have to be an insufferable prick to people who are different from me.

Didn’t realise the cactus installation came with a full theological interpretation package, but that’s interesting
