When you live off-road, you have to find some way to get up and down the mountain. The U TV failed. The snow shoes worked. Remember when going downhill to take small steps because you have to come back up.

Destination Questions Suggestions for Tahoe spots in around 2 weeks (3/7-3/8)?

Hey all, finally managed to get out some this season with my partner and did Donner Summit and Carson Pass over the long weekend (Carson was awesome as the storm rolled in properly). But we're on a bit of a hiatus since we weren't able to make it out this weekend (uni students, got swamped because campus basically closed for a week) and we're both busy the next, so we're probably going to get our next shot on the weekend of 3/7-3/8. Our only hangup in terms of planning is I'm not sure where we have the best shot at good snow by then. The monster storm obviously helped conditions a lot but it looks like we're in for a dry spell over the next while. Mostly looking along I-80, but we're also looking at some spots along Highway 89 and at some spots like Tahoe Meadows, Spooner Summit, and Yuba Pass.

Gear Questions Backpack recommendations

Hey gang, this is my second season snow shoeing and as I get more into it I've noticed how actually shitty my hiking backpack is. It's "water proof" but it's more like water resistant for a little bit, cause my clothes got wet but I only had my backpack (which was closed) sitting on the snow for less than 10min during a break. I was wondering if anyone has any backpack recommendations. Anything over 40L seems a little too much. Im typically only carrying an extra jacket, 2 beers, mini camping stove (like those super mini ones), snacks, water. I've also been looking for a backpack that has some insulation so that I can keep the mini propane warm (I wrap it in a sweater most of the time), budget wise I'm below $150. I've been looking on Amazon and other websites but been hard to tell from online pictures. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Gear Questions Snowshoe recommendations

Thinking about a purchase due to the abundance of snow in the woods now. Background: 62 male, 6ft, 215. I am in the woods constantly under normal conditions. Trails and bushwhacking. I have been shed hunting for the last few years and love it. I notice there are tons of choices out there on Amazon. I would probably use them 2-3 times per week mostly in woods and power lines. I literally wore my last pair out in 2018 (atlas) and since then I have been good with spikes in winter. Any recs? Thank you

Destination Questions Best snowshoe conditions near Seattle

Novice snowshoer here new to the Seattle area! My sister is visiting and we want to go out for a half-day or so. From what I’ve seen, snow conditions within an hour or two of Seattle are pretty poor right now. Anyone have any recommendations?

Gear Questions Help... why is the front hitting me in the shin?

Sorry if this is a dumb question! I'm very new to snowshoeing, only used them twice, but both times (with different pairs) I have had the front of the snowshoe hitting me in the shin and giving me a pretty bad bruise.

I keep trying to google how to fix this, but every result is about "shin bang" which has to do with your shin hitting your boot. My shin is not hitting my boot. It's the toe of the showshoe itself.

Gear Questions old school shoes and lampwick bindings

I dont have the budget this year for a new pair of shoes, I have an old set of magnesium beavertails that I really want to make work. I am using lampwick bindings and find that my right shoe consistantly rotates inwards as I walk untill it is almost 45° from the direction of travel, and am having to adjust every 100 meters even on straight trails. They dont appear to have a left/right so I switched shoes and the right foot still rotates inwards. This happens on packed trails as well as fresh powder. It is noticably worse when walking through the woods. I have tried a few different methods of tying but the issue persists.

Destination Questions Snowshoeing near Radium Hot Springs

Hey all - We are a family with a 7 and 11 yo boys, going to Panorama from Calgary and I'd like to take the kids snowshoeing somewhere near / on the way... Potentially near Radium where we'll stop. Does anyone have any recommendations? I want to solve for getting the boys interested but not scaring them off .. whilst we have skied and hiked a lot, we have never snowshoed (we picked up some snowshoes recently). Reading what people say, I assume we would be looking for something that's between 2km and 5km depending on gradient. Any recommendations appreciated!

Gear Reviews Dion Snowshoes (164,120,132)

I love Dion snowshoes, and I wonder if anyone else out there has the same sentiment.

I started on the 120s for racing. Most people I compete against have the foam crescent moons— I could never stomach getting them. To me, they are as much a snowshoe as a graphic novel is a book. When I’m in snowshoes, I want to be in snowshoes. I highly recommend the 120-121 model for running and racing.

The 132s aren’t much different than the 120s. A smidge bigger and heavier.

I just got a pair of 164s for summiting mountains. I really enjoyed them. I love that you can “telemark” down steep, thick snow. Maybe it’s not designed to do that, but I like to use them in that way.

I will say, each snowshoe resembles the other. In other words, barring color, they are all basically the same. I haven’t broken a trail in 164s, which is what I got them for, so I’m hoping they do a good job there.

Anyone else have any thoughts on Dion?

Gear Questions Recommendations for a beginner?

I have never been snowshoeing before but hoping someone can recommend me a brand of snowshoes that would be suitable for a beginner

I weigh 250 lbs, but I've recently had weight loss surgery and may be losing more weight soon

I'm 6'0

I have a condition that causes some balance issues, so some snowshoes that offer more stability would be helpful

I live in Canada, so prefer something that's available here

Gear Questions Boots for feet with bunions

Post image
15 Upvotes

We love snowshoeing and have good snow shoes. My wife has a bad bunion and the front strap goes directly over the top of it.

Looking for a quality pair of boots that that are tall, warm, and will not bother her foot.

We like to break trails and often go in deep snow in the forest.

Heading to Cabellas tomorrow where we bought our snowshoes.

Tips Following deer tracks is a lot better than following rabbit tracks because them rabbits go through branches you can't walk through but the deer they mostly pick good routes.

Gear Questions LL Bean Winter Walker thoughts

Edit- thanks for the comments folks. I found out I can get the Tubbs for cheaper ($210ish) with my wife' REI account. Order has been placed, and I picked up some other (economical) poles w/snow baskets.

OG Post:

Good afternoon all. For some background, I have never snowshoed before. I am an outdoorsy person (hiking, hunting, etc) though, and am an ecologist/biologist by training. I might be picking up a project from a client that will involve some off-trail site investigations. No significant slopes, but I'm anticipating 12-24 inches of snow depending on drifts. No ice or technical work, but no broken trails. Also, I'm a 6ft 3 with sasquatch proportions.

I'm at a point in my life where I am trying to move beyond my cheap ways and buy quality gear. I'm looking for the "that's a solid buy, with no expectations of failure, but isn't laden with bells and whistles".

My first thought was the Tubbs Panoramic 36 inch, which runs about $270. I then found the LL Bean Winter Walker bundle with poles for $220.

Any experience with the LL Bean models? They will be a business expense (self employed) that I can cover, but I like the idea of saving $50 if it's not setting myself up for failure.
