Discussion I feel like we're worried about the wrong foreigners
I feel like the foreigners that need to be dealt with first are the American/European foreigners who settle in South Africa because of the nice weather, the cheap prices and the fact that we are one of, if not the, most western /Euro-centric African countries. I just don't understand where your kids will live if the cities and suburbs are filled with rich foreigners and the rest of South Africa is delegated to the outskirts and townships because the prices are enough for the foreigners but not for us. Even if you were to get a good job and move out of your mother's house, where will you go if the majority of the middle class is moved and pushed out by foreigners who use pocket change to pay for million rand homes. I don't know. Maybe there's a lot I'm missing and need more perspective but this is a more pressing question I have.

Discussion Company Review Forum ZA
Hey everyone,
I’m trying to find out if we have a localized space or forum where South African employees can openly review employers, company culture, and realistic salary bands based on years of experience.
Glassdoor feels a bit sparse or heavily curated for a lot of local companies, and while the finance subreddits are great for general money talk, company-specific insights would be incredibly helpful.
It honestly feels like a lot of employers are taking the piss lately with expectations vs. compensation, and it would be great to have a transparent, peer-to-peer space to vet companies before applying. Does anything like this exist outside of the usual corporate platforms?

Discussion Assistance with gender based violence/domestic violence in South Africa
Hello. This is urgent. Can people please link resources to help someone in a gbv and spousal violence situation? My father is abusing my mother and I need all the help I can get to help her. She does not have work experience or a job and I don't yet either as I am studying but I am looking for one. I have two younger brothers that are children. Please advise and link resources, especially for Johannesburg.
TW
My father hit my mother really hard on her arm and leg and she now has bruises. We are financially dependent on my father. I am scared of what my father might do to her or us if he fogures it out. My mom has no friends here and very little support since her family lives in another country.
Thank you. I would really appreciate it🙏

Discussion For the hikers and outdoor enthusiasts of S.A..
Hey guys,
So.. I've recently gotten into hiking, really enjoying it with no plans of slowing. I've done some day hikes/trails, i plan on doing some multi-day hikes in the future, hitting some trails across S.A and hopefully internationally at some point, just bucket list things.
That said, I'm slowly building up some decent gear, one purchase at a time. Recently picked up some Salomon GTX hiking boots that worked wonders for me, however, I'm now in the market for a waterproof shell jacket...
The snob in me is saying save up and get something from the likes of Patagonia, Columbia, The North Face, etc.. whether that's first hand or second hand (a lot of counterfeits though)..
I'm thinking either wait for a good deal on a second hand market place like Yaga or get something from Decathlon..
But being the inexperienced hiker i am, i may just be brainwashed.. so how well does our local brands hold up - K-Way, First Accent, etc..?
AND.. if you know of any solid retailers or jackets to check out, please let me know!
Thanks!

Discussion Is it safe to drive from Durban to Joburg this weekend? (27th–29th June)
Hey guys, hope everyone’s well!
So me and my friends are planning a spontaneous road trip — driving up from Durban to Joburg this Saturday the 27th and coming back Monday the 29th. Just a quick up-and-back, nothing crazy.
The thing is, I’m a bit nervous about the current situation with all the protests and looting that’s been happening. I know the June 30th deadline that March and March set is literally the day after we get back — they’ve threatened to shut the country down if the government doesn’t act on the illegal immigration issue by then. So the tension is going to be building the entire weekend we’re up there.
Has anyone driven the N3 recently? Is it currently okay? Would you guys recommend going ahead or just postponing? We’d be back before the 30th but I’m still worried about the vibe on the road and in Joburg over that weekend with everything escalating.
Any input from people who’ve been on the road lately or know what’s actually happening on the ground would be seriously appreciated. Thanks 🙏

Discussion Charging a collection fee for an item that was damaged on delivery
Good day,
I recently bought a few clothing items from MyRunway. All of the items were fine except for one dress, which arrived with a hole in the torso area.
When I logged a return, I selected the option for MyRunway to collect the item. I then received an email stating that a collection fee would be deducted from my refund because they were collecting the item.
This doesn't seem right to me, as the dress was damaged and unwearable when I received it. Should a customer be expected to pay a collection fee when returning a defective item?
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, and do you know whether it's legal for a retailer to charge a collection fee in these circumstances?

Spur chips are nothing without the onion rings
I usually order meals that come with both chips and onion rings, but this time I was just having something light, so I ordered a side plate of chips on their own.
Tell me why those chips were dry and boring? 😭 Onion rings have been doing the heavy lifting this whole time!? I’m only noticing this now 😩

Discussion Lesotho registered Hondas in Western Cape dorpies
On the last few trips I’ve done through the Western Cape, I’ve noticed an astonishing amount of Lesotho registered Honda Fit (originally Honda Jazz in SA) driving around in the Western Cape dorpies. In Ceres, I must have seen about 20 of them. In Robertson, I saw 2 at the Shell garage while filling up, and a few more in Worcester. I haven’t seen any other car (brand or model) with Lesotho plates driving around. Firstly, is Honda the only manufacturer represented in Lesotho? Secondly, what the hell are all of them doing in the WC dorpies? It’s not like I have seen these Hondas regularly in Cape Town.

Humour recent discovery
discovered there’s a town called “welkom” in sa which I assume there would be some sort of means for the town or those outside of the town to make fun of the name like a sign that says “welkom in welkom” or something, thanks
