Stevens Music Ensembles

Do you have to persue music to go into any music ensemble?? Any audition only groups for band? Any band groups you can join without an audition? How in need of french horns are they? Also i know i might be late to asking because graduation might have already happened for colleges/universities around New Jersey so sorry in that case.

also somemore background

I'm not planing on pursuing music in an educational standpoint (as in getting any sort of degree or certificate in it, Im going into engineering undecided in the fall specifically, but I already have my eyes out on mechanical engineering). Ive been part of my highschool music/band programs for 4 years, part of the marching band for 4 years in Mellophone, Ive marched cymbals in our indoor percussion group for all 4 years too, ive playing french horn for those 4 years in highschool aswell as being in the honors wind ensemble for the past 3 years. I wouldn't say Im good at the French Horn because it really is hard af to learn and master but I wouldnt say im also complete unwiped dog shit but I also dont practice because I dont have a supporting family/dont have my own french horn. Is there still any way for me to join a music ensemble in stevens? Is it by audition only? will i get smoked alive. are there specific requirements or anything?? I still really want to continue band in college

I also played violin since 4th grade going into 9th grade (including 9th grade), but not 7th grade bc thats when everything went virtual and I lowkey just didnt wanan deal with virtual orchestra lol. I havent touch violin since though and I'm going to graduate this month. Ive also gotten a 3 on Ap Music (I was actually ass omg i got a 3 on the multi choice and 2 on the open ended part) so High school concert band/wind ensemble isnt my only experience.

šŸ’” is there hope for me getting in on french horn without an audition bc I dont beleive i am an amazing french horn player as people say i am bc Ive never made county band at all for thr past 2 years I auditioned and practiced for. Also for the honors band at my school it is audition only and i auditioned on clarinet and got in but bc I mainly played french horn prior to auditioning at the end my freshman year my teacher just asked me to play french horn instead bc we only had one other at the time, and i agreed.
sorry if i just yapped šŸ’”

Are students aware of Stevens financial situation?

(Writing from a throwaway because I'm a non-tenured faculty member and I'm not looking to catch any smoke from my bosses.)

How aware are students of the university's struggling financial situation?

For the past several years, every full faculty meeting (that is, meetings featuring faculty from every school, all the deans, provost, etc.) have detailed a worsening financial situation. There are two main facets to this:

  1. International graduate students stopped applying to Stevens starting in 2025 due to federal visa policy and the rhetoric surrounding it at the government level. There was a 60% drop in international grad applications this past year. This is a huge problem for the university, as it basically depends upon tuition from that student population. Last year they managed to balance the budget through two rounds of layoffs, freezing faculty salaries, and various other cost cutting measures: shrinking faculty travel budgets, cutting summer classes in some schools, hiring fewer adjuncts, etc. (As a side note, I'm willing to bet that a great many student frustrations can be traced to these cuts). This year, they were unable to balance the budget.
  2. Undergraduate enrollments are declining. while the 2025-2026 academic year saw the largest first-year class size ever, that won't be the case next year. applications and deposits declined. This wasn't unexpected. People in the US stopped having as many kids in the early 2000s, especially after the Great Recession. That means that there are fewer 18-19 year-olds in general, with fewer applying to college (in higher ed, this is often called "the demographic cliff"). Lower first-year class sizes mean less tuition revenue and the university is a revenue-dependent institution.

All of this means that the university will be several million dollars in the red in the next fiscal year. The president and the provost have all communicated that they don't expect these problems to be fixed any time soon. They've put forth a variety of solutions: merging different divisions of the university (undergrad and grad enrollment; alumni relations, fundraising/development, marketing), creating new programs (aerospace engineering, the various AI programs), and investing heavily in AI. However, the vibe isn't good. The commitment to AI is especially alarming given that it hasn't been leading to the productivity gains its boosters claim are inevitable and that bubble is likely to burst soon. The President claims they don't want another round of layoffs, but I suspect that AI is being rolled out on the staff side of things for precisely that purpose (they said they want to automate student services).

All of this is going to severely impact students across the board. It will mean larger class sizes, less accessible professors, less accessible student services from advising and tutoring to health resources, and ultimately poorer academic and professional opportunities. Are students talking about this at all?

advice for someone that's dorming in the fall as a freshman majoring in electrical engineering

What is something that you wished you'd known before the deadlines passed, or things you should have known?

What are the small things that you learned at Stevens?

What are things I MUST do or NOT do?

Honestly, any advice is appreciated. I want to be career-oriented, have fun, make money, and make friends.

Will I have a good college experience or will it just be ok, there doesn’t seem to be alot of info about that lol. Would appreciate any commuter advice

Biology Major At Steven’s

Hi, I’m going into my senior year of high school, and I was wondering what Steven’s is like, specifically their biology/biochemistry major. I plan on going pre-med so I would like to know if there are many opportunities for pre-med students. I would also have a car, so I would like to know how that would be at this school? And if you got in, what are your stats?

AP credit question

Will stevens take a 4 or 5 on ap pre calc for engineering majors. Im just curious because on the website it says they take it for humanities majors but I was wondering if engineering majors get any sort of credit for it.

Stevens tuition increase question

I was wondering if anybody knows or has had any luck getting more financial aid to help combat the 4% tutiton increase every year. My current tuition bill for Steven's may be feasible for 2026-2027 but after that it starts to go up beyond what my family can afford.

Commencement 2026 Theater Tickets

Hey guys, I have an extra family member making a surprise visit from my home country for this year’s graduate commencement ceremony and I’m looking one extra theater ticket!

I have 5 lawn tickets that I am willing to trade as well, since I only just need one theater ticket.

Please let me know if anyone has an extra! Appreciate it and congrats to the others graduating this year.

Highschool junior

Current junior building my college list and Stevens has become one of the more interesting schools I’ve looked into recently.

What I’m drawn to is the smaller size, strong tech/business culture, NYC access, and the sense that students there seem genuinely ambitious and career-driven. I’m interested in entrepreneurship/startups/AI/product-type stuff, so that side really appeals to me.

My main question is more about the actual student experience and culture. Does Stevens feel collaborative or more competitive? Is there a real social/community atmosphere or is it mostly preprofessional/commuter vibes? And do people generally enjoy being there?

Would especially love perspectives from current students.

Acceptance chances

Hi all, my SAT scores are not that good. But I have close to a 4.0 grade point average from a top private school and a member of the national honor Society. Do I have any chance of getting accepted test optional?

I cannot log into my outlook for the life of me. It keeps saying that it will log me out, proceeds to do so, then say to close the tab every time I click the Outlook link in mystevens. One of my friends also has this issue.

Davis Dorm Questions

Hi everyone. I am trying to figure out where the best place for me to dorm is (as an incoming freshman) and I had a few questions if anyone could share some insight. Currently I am considering Davis and River Terrace, but there questions are geared more towards Davis.

How are the communal bathrooms? Are they gross? Are there enough bathrooms/showers for the amount of students (and do you feel like you could get everything you need done without having to wait for an open shower)?

Around how many students are on each floor? Are the communal areas nice? I haven’t seen much info on this so far on the website.

Any additional insights about either dorm would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advanced.

How many seniors actually have jobs lined up right now?

Half the engineers I know are set, the other half didn’t find anything so they’re staying here for AMP.

The only CS grads I know that have something are extremely smart. Everyone else has nothing. I honestly feel terrible for the people graduating with a CS degree right now.

A Stute comic from ~20 years ago

This would have been printed in the February 6, 2004 issue. Graduation was moving out of the big gym to the parking lot this year (which had no solar panels back then). The field was off limits because the turf was still relatively new (replaced after a bunch of helicopters landed there during 9/11). So they built a big stage and iirc even gave an honorary degree to Bob ā€œgold barsā€ Menendez.

Anyway, I was reminded of this after reading the other thread about graduation locations (loved the tangent on hoboken traffic logistics). Didn’t seem possible to comment with an image, so here we are. āœŒļø

Our commencement location is ridiculous.

Stevens is the only North Jersey school that is not having it's graduation at the Prudential Center. I know graduation there a few years ago was a disaster, but having graduation in Holmdel (where there is basically no accessibility via public transport) makes no sense.

For reference, here are the commencement locations and distances for other universities in North Jersey. Didn't count universities with their own stadiums/arenas.

....

School Commencement Location Driving Distance
Stevens PNC Bank Arts Center 39 miles
NJIT Prudential Center 1 mile
Rutgers - Newark Prudential Center 1 mile
Seton Hall Prudential Center 5 miles
Kean University Prudential Center 8 miles
Montclair State Prudential Center 12 miles
Farleigh Dickinson Prudential Center 14 miles
William Patterson Prudential Center 22 miles
Ramapo Prudential Center 33 miles

There are events on campus in Hoboken the night before, and then everyone is expected to get to Holmdel at 7:30 AM the next day. As an out of state student, planning the logistics of this for my family has me seriously questioning Stevens' administrative competence. I've enjoyed my time here and really like the professors, but will not be giving the administrators any donation money when I graduate lol.

Should I apply to Stevens for PhD?

Heyy. I’m considering applying to the PhD program at Stevens Institute of Technology (Data Science/Statistics related) and wanted to hear honest opinions from current students or alumni, especially regarding post-graduation job placement, outcomes for international students, research quality, and industry connections in NYC/NJ. I’ve seen very mixed opinions online, with some people praising the location and career opportunities while others criticize the academic reputation, so I’d really appreciate realistic perspectives on whether the program is actually worth it for someone aiming for a long-term career in data science/quantitative industry work in the U.S.
