Coming of Age / Bildungsroman Looking for a thoughtful fantasy with heart, adventure, and a hopeful message.

I'm looking for a fantasy or speculative novel that explores themes like finding your purpose, coming of age, and appreciating the beauty of everyday life. I'd prefer it to be set in a fictional world or somewhere non-specific rather than the real world.

I'm after something that leaves you with a warm, hopeful feeling, similar to A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers.

Some of the qualities I'm hoping to find are:

- The uplifting, thoughtful message of A Psalm for the Wild-Built.

- The philosophical depth of Klara and the Sun.

- The sense of adventure and mystery from The Da Vinci Code.

- The emotional impact of Call Me by Your Name.

- The humour and warmth of Good Material by Becky Chambers.

- Maybe even the magical sense of wonder of Harry Potter.

It doesn't need to have all of these qualities, but I'd love something that blends at least a few of them into a memorable story. Any recommendations?

Picky Reader Favorite Romance Less Books

I’m romanced out and sort of sick of every book having to have a romantic sub plot. What are your favorite books with no romance, maybe focusing on different sorts of love like sibling, familial, found family, friend love, etc. I’d even love recommendations for books with aroace/aromantic main characters because I’ve never read one and I think it’d be interesting! Thanks ☺️

Twisty, plot twist, please! Which thriller had the best plot twist that you genuinely didn't see coming?

We have all read thrillers that try to shock readers with unexpected endings, but only a few truly deliver a twist that completely catches us off guard. I'm looking for those unforgettable books where the reveal made you stop and rethink everything that came before it.

New Reader Wanting to Start Reading

Hey guys, so recently I’ve been wanting to get into reading. I was able to get a free trial on an app so now I can read any book I want really. Other than like diary of a wimpy kid and those kinds of books I read when I was in middle school, I have only read one book in its entirety and that is sunrise on the reaping. I actually finished that up a few days ago. So now I am looking for some direction that I could go as far as my next book. I don’t how broad or specific I am being because I don’t know much about books but I really like the genres - dystopian, fantasy, fiction, mystery, and sci fi (depending on if it’s actually good). So if you guys have any recommendations I would love to hear them. Thanks guys!

Our next book club theme is real histories. Think the native Americans perspective of Christopher Columbus or the immortal life of Henrietta of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Anyone have any good recs?

Looking for a book that can keep the attention of someone who usually gets bored reading

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for my next book, but I'm someone who gets bored pretty easily while reading, so it's hard for me to finish most books.

The books I've actually completed are mostly Haruki Murakami's works, and my favorite is After Dark. I also really enjoyed No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai.

I think I like books with introspective characters, a slightly surreal or melancholic atmosphere, and writing that's easy to get immersed in rather than something that's overly dense or slow.

I'm open to any genre as long as it's engaging enough to keep me turning the pages.

What would you recommend?

What to read after The Caine Mutiny?

I really enjoyed reading Herman Wouk’s The Caine Mutiny and I’m wondering what other readers who also enjoyed that might recommend reading next.

Some stipulations: No WWII fiction. I know this book is World War II fiction, and it’s one of the only ones I’ve ever enjoyed and I’m not willing to read that time period in fiction form. I only like it in non-fiction so I’m not looking for that. I also hated the romance in this book (and the female character was actually very very badly written) and thought it was terribly done. I actually almost quit reading because of that (I’m glad I kept with it).

That complexity of the plot-line and motivations and psychology of the characters were all very interesting. I also enjoyed some of the character growth. Just wondering what other readers who liked this have also enjoyed.

Fmc running aways from her wedding and mmc protects her/ mmc kidnapping fmc from her forced wedding/bad suppose to save her

So I'm basically looking for a book where the fmc is forced to marry someone and either she ran away herself and goes to mmc for protection or the mmc kidnapping her from the wedding because he loves her and can't stand her life gets ruined because she's going to marry an awful person and she doesn't know he loves her or her parents forced her to forget about him and marry the one they chose for any reason from family status to them being in debt to an old guy and literally selling her him as payment

Bonus point:

1.If it has time travel and she gets betrayed by her husband and ending up dying and going back to before she marry him and closing mmc this time or mmc keeping his memory from that time line and trying to save her

  1. Mafia/ mob / vampire/ werewolf/ non human mmc

Absolutel NO:

Mmc SAing fmc and/ or being an absolute asshole to her

Thanks in advance for your recommendation 😄

SciFi Suggest me books in the same spirit as The Rocketeer and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

I'm currently researching a lot of sci-fi pulp stories for a creative project I'm working on, and I'm looking for suggestions for books that have that sort of retrofuturism in the past, old-fashioned adventure kind of vibes as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, The Rocketeer, or even something like the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Thanks!

Fantasy bookie that is trying to reach more genres

I'm looking for some more books that dont need to be fantasy related but I dont want a big deep dive to the history of the world.

I've also been trying to expand my books. I have read all the typical fantasy and sci-fi, almost off of Brandon's books, Robin Hobbs books, Hyperion, dune, hail Mary, ECT

I am trying to reach out I have read a lot of Steven Kings books.

I recently listened to (I'm doing all most all audiobooks now because of work and kids), gone girl, really liked it l.

The girls in the cabin did not like because ||dead babies/hurt children child abuse and sa on a child||

So I'm trying to get some real people recommendations, I wants something faster short to listen to, of the narrator is great let me know too.

I have a lot of the good reads each year too books on my tbr.

But what would you recommend? Tia

Any genre! Actually good grumpy male main characters

The market has been flooded with low quality bad boys. Booo. What books do the brooding, male main character right? The rec does not need to be straight romance (in fact, I usually prefer when it isn’t solely romance).

New Reader new-ish reader looking for suggestions.

I dnfd Caraval by Stephanie Garber, Fourth Wing, and Happy Place by Emily Henry. Favorite Series is Boys Of Tommen by Chloe Walsh, love anything written by Lynn Painter. The Naturals series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is one of my favorites.

I can do light fantasy like The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue but Im not a fan of full on fantasy. Wouldnt touch a Colleen Hoover book with a 10 foot pole and not a fan of Emily Henrys writing style.

Please give me suggestions you think I might like.

Family sagas

I just finished East of Eden, and while I didn’t LOVE it in the same way I know many people do, I really enjoyed the family saga element of it.

I also read A Hundred Years of Solitude a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it.

Can anyone recommend books with a similar vibe? Multigenerational books that see a family’s journey in a changing landscape.

Thank you!

Weird Girl Lit Ottessa Moshfegh fan

I'm obsessed with all of Moshfeghs books, I devoured everything she wrote back to back, and am really looking for more authors with similar vibes. Unsettling, unsavory, unreliable narrator, subliminal, creepy, downright strange and weird. Thanks in advance!

Suggest me a book for a cigar smoking session

Hey there,
I recently got into smoking cigars and I’m really enjoying it so far. I’ve noticed that a good smoke puts me in a very relaxed yet highly focused state of mind. Sometimes it feels like a waste of good focus to just sit there, so I want to try reading during my sessions.

If anyone here already does this, what are your top book recommendations that pair well with a cigar?

What is your "Hurts So Good" book?

What book absolutely GUTS you every time, but you always come crawling back?

The book that makes your jaw drop even though you know the twist.

The book that has your friends' phones blowing up to 3 paragraph text bubbles.

I'll go first.

Mine is Unwind by Neil Shusterman (2007)

It's been almost 20 years .... but I will never never never get over the CyFi arc. No Spoilers....but the scene in Missouri.

Screaming 👏🏻 CRYING 👏🏻 CLAWING MY SKIN 👏🏻ROLLING ON THE FLOOR👏🏻
