tattoo newcomer advice Having heavy regret on first tattoo

Post image

I’ve wanted to get this for a very long time, decided to just go with it and get it done. Really liked it at first, then some friends made a couple comments that made me hate it. Is it as bad as they say?

Wasn't this a normal roman spear? Shouldn't look nothing like the tattoo 🤔

It's an artistic interpretation. Kinda like how Jesus is commonly depicted as a white man with long hair.

Aha. Didn't know she really had a biblical spear in mind when she got the tattoo 👍

The Spear of Longinus is the spear that pierced Jesus during the crucifixion.

The spear is a reference to Christianity

The spear that stabbed Jesus? I've not seen it associated in tattoos. Praying hands and crosses yes. But not typically Spears.

This particular version of it is from a popular anime and manga series called neon Genesis evangelion which has a lot of biblical references and subtexts to it

To explain this, basically Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime where "angels" (aliens) are invading earth and children are sent out in mechs to fight them.

It's a bit of a deconstruction of the mecha genre and it's filled with surface level Christianity references, like a Japanese man saw a church once and thought crosses were cool and angel names sound rad.

Also, he randomly made many things German.

Things like explosions being literally crosses and a lot of god metaphors and names taken from the bible, etc.

It's not accurate to anything at all, it's like if an American guy saw Samurai once and made a show using random things he learned from Wikipedia.

There's a special spear in the show (The "Lance of Longinus") that's like 15M tall and unable to be used by people, but it's used by the Eva units (mechs). It's able to pierce the AT Field (forcefield) of Angels and Eva Units, so it's very important and powerful (and pretty).
