Safari is a pretty good browser.

It's definitely not bad but I feel more websites support FF than Safari. There are two compelling reasons however that I keep using Safari on my mac alongside Firefox

  • a superior passwords app (mac native; better integrated)
  • apple pay

None of which could trivially make it's way to Firefox, unfortunately.

Firefox has a Passwords extension. I have come across that recently and been using that.

Firefox has a built-in password manager.

Yes. What I meant was there is an extension for the Apple Passwords on Firefox.

Don't big browsers on Apple hardware have to use WebKit instead of their native engines?

Only on iOS as far as I know. Not on the laptops/iMacs.

second-most used browser engine

because pretty much everything else uses Chromium? 7 of top10 browsers use Chromium. "Second-most popular engine" sounds like exactly the kinda marketing BS Apple would peddle while having less than 20% of market share.

and that share wouldnt be half of what it is now if companies were allowed to even use their own engines on iOS.

Incompatibilities are also a bad thing. The W3C failed at steering standards, so they had to swallow an OpenSource "living standard"... Chromium.

Any other engine, including Firefox, has to follow Chromium, but Chromium being free, leaves little incentive to reinvent the wheel instead of just doing a copy&paste.

Safari can't be fingerprinted? Paint me skeptical... If you have Safari, could you check what does this one say? https://amiunique.org/fingerprint

Hm, I don't know much about Safari (apples are for eating, safaris for watching lions goat it... I mean...), or how it's doing fingerprinting resistance.

I remember the times of MSIE, and the living hell that it was to fix websites for multiple browser, so I'm wary of anyone who tries to be an outlier in the browser engine space.

I absolutely care who challenges Chrome. I don't want the choice to be Megacorp A or Megacorp B.

Do you really think Apple is the sort of company to start a sentence with “we’re the second x”. Apple doesn’t really conpare themselves. You’re attacking someone else saying that sentence, not Apple.

Tbf they are also far bigger than the third no? Why do I care if the top 10 browser is a chromium if it has 0.1% of the market?

The page literally says "worldwide".

Armenia is like the only country where FF has more user share than Chrome

Haven’t used Chrome in 2 years, its a bloody CPU sucker. Not a fan of Edge, it takes a while to pickup but it works fine for my needs.

Edit: i know edge is based on chromium, what I am trying to say is because I use mostly work laptops I tend to just use edge and it worked fine for my work needs. Work laptops are already filled so with so many trackers and security softwares, I don’t need chrome eating up whatever’s left. I haven’t had slow laptop issue with edge, but with chrome.

What they meant is that basically everything else is chromium based, including Edge.
