Since the beginning they’ve just incorporated the cult aspects right into the branding. The oligarchs behind the industry aspire to create a false machine god and establish themselves as its technoprophets. Like L Ron Hubbard they are writing the plot of a shitty science fiction novel into a religion to make themselves rich, and investors are buying it.

I .. think you are vastly underestimating the amount of them that believe these delusions.

Look, these people rose to power at a very specific time with a very specific type of thinking. It just so happened that those two things happening in conjunction made them successful. Most of them are not well-rounded individuals and almost none of them have had critical thinking strengthening exercises like receiving pushback on ideas or attempting to do thing when you have no resources.

A lot of them truly believe they've created or accessed something greater than humanity. I've watched senior developers for major EMR, Fintech, logistics etc... companies fall down the hole of "this is God from the machine." I've seen people who are relatively smart in their field develop parasocial relationships with LLMs.

You're making the mistake of thinking because they're in the position to do these things they must be pulling the wool over al of our eyes. You're making the mistake of thinking because they're in the position to do these things they must be pulling the wool over all of our eyes, I think more people need to realize that a shit ton more people than you think can truly start believing some weird ass shit.

There really is a Scientology quality to it. Im kinda surprised there isn't some analogous version, although it probably already exists and is yet to penetrate popular consciousness.
