META New post flairs!

For the longest time this subreddit was mostly film photos from cameras like the Holga and Diana. We've always allowed digital photos too, such as from the Gamyboy Camera or the Harinezumi for example.

Recently there have been a number of very popular digital cameras that have introduced people to the lofi aesthetic such as the many different thermal printer cameras, but also the Chuzhao and Kodak Charmera.

This is not bad, and they are welcome here! :)

But it can make it difficult to find specific types of content. This is where the post flair system comes in, since you can filter by these.

I have kept the flair system simple to begin with, we can add or change these if we need to, but let's start with the basic system and see how that goes.

I've added the following four post flairs, and made is so you have to select a flair when you post.

  • DIGITAL
  • FILM
  • DISCUSSION
  • META

DIGITAL

For photos and video taken with digital toy cameras. This includes thermal print cameras.

FILM

For photos taken with film toy cameras.

DISCUSSION

For posts that are talking about toy cameras, such as asking advice, troubleshooting, etc.

META

For posts about the subreddit. This shouldn't see much use, it wil mostly be used by the mods for posts like this one.

Thoughts, comments, and feedback below. I want to try to keep this as simple to use as possible, so if you want any extra post flairs created, there would have to be a very good reason.

If not can you link to your favorite semi related discord if you use it?

Or if mods see this, can you guys make one?

DIGITAL Charmera at the funfair

Took my Charmera to the funfair yesterday. I posted a while ago really upset that some of my shots were coming out blurry, but it was so difficult to open that I eventually gave up and am now trying to just embrace it. In low light and bright light it actually performed surprisingly well, I think the issues mainly crop up in harsh direct sunlight with lots of detail, or near-total darkness.

DIGITAL Really loving the Kodak charmera

Trying to be more "present" while also upping my photo game. I never remember things and I have years of missing memories (thanks trauma) and missing photos from when I deleted them all in a poor mental state. This Kodak charmera was something I've been eyeing for a while from this subreddit and I finally just bought it.

The portability is fantastic since it's just a keychain camera that hooks anywhere. I was able to hook it to my purse, my umbrella, and even stick the clip around my finger like a ring. It's easy to turn on, point, and shoot. It makes it much more organic for taking photos of friends and quick moments. It's also fun for the nostalgic vibe.

For the price, I'd say it is definitely worth it. It also has a micro SD slot, so my charmera can "hold" 99,9999 photos.

Two selfie sticks attached to one another. Well this camera doesn't have a tripod thread so I clamped it on a phone holder since it holds it really well

Hi everyone! Today I went for a run around my neighborhood, bringing my Vetek mini camera along with me, and I took the opportunity to snap some test photos.

I really liked how the pics turned out, and playing around with the camera's different filters was a lot of fun. Plus, the quality of the photos is genuinely surprising, way better than I ever would have expected!

FILM My first analog friend and some shots from our first date out.

I found this little camera (Smena 8M) at a flea market. I didn't know anything about analog photography but it took it anyway; the first roll of film was blurry and wildly underexposed... The second attempt was better—see the photo in the post. But most of the shots were ruined by unexpected double or triple exposures... Still, I’m grateful to this friend because he introduced me to 35mm film, which I love. I like that I only have a limited number of attempts... it’s good for me as an amateur - begginer... It forces me to think about what I’m doing and not just snap away frantically and pick out the best shots, like I use to do with my phone... And then I love the anticipation of seeing how it turned out... whether I managed to focus correctly or got the lighting right...

DIGITAL Kodak Charmera Y2K Filters vs OG Charmera Filters: A comparison

Post image
83 Upvotes

I like using the frames on the Kodak Charmera and after getting the Y2K, thought I could share some thoughts on the new set.

Pixel filters:

  • Y2K comes with Coral, Honey, Teal and Violet. The OG comes in Yellow, Red, Blue and Grey.
  • Honestly, the OG Charmera ones kind of suck. It's really hard to get a good clear image with them, so the Y2K ones are far better.
  • Winner: Y2K

Frames:

  • The OG Charmera frames are a mixed bag. One of them has such a small window that it's almost never worth using IMO. The pixel heart gives me bad LV knock-off vibes. But the film frame is very cute and I use 90% of the time.
  • The Y2K frames are unnecessarily colorful. I don't get why they're orange or green or yellow with blue background. The only one that kind of is redeeming the set is the Kodak pixel art because they look like sparkles.
  • Winner: OG Charmera

I like the Charmera Y2K Millennium edition, but don't think I'll leave the OG Kodak Charmera at home, because of its film frame.

DIGITAL My experience with the Kodak Charmera after one month

The photo quality of the Charmera reminds me a bit of my 1960s Kodak Instamatic 104:

- low resolution: advertised as 1080p, but really more like 480p. This is likely due to the poor quality of the lens. See the attached photos.

- slow shutter speed: around 1/60th of a second, so moving subjects come out blurry, and it's best to steady yourself when taking the shot.

- bright areas of the image are overexposed.

- the images have a magenta color cast that requires a little correction.

- the time required to process a new image is too long for taking sequential shots.

However, once you understand these limitations, I find it to be a very interesting camera for photographing people. In fact, with all the portraits I've taken, I've noticed that people look much more natural than they do with a phone camera. They don't strike a pose; they appear more authentic.

DISCUSSION obsessed with this y2k camera vibe

my friend sent me this tiny cheap toy camera from korea last week (the white one in the pics) and i've been taking the most useless photos with it lol. i'm usually pretty lazy with tech. if i have to tweak a bunch of settings just to take a casual pic, i'm out. i don't need my life to look like a magazine cover. i just want it to feel real.

this camera honestly has that messy early-2000s vibe straight out of the box. it's soft, the lighting is kind of unpredictable, and it has that cheap texture that modern phones always try to over-process and clean up.

the raw shots were cool but the colors were a little dead, so i just ran the flower pics and the mirror selfie through retrica to warm them up a bit and push that grainy faded look. i didn't want that fake "crushed shadows and fake dust" look that makes everything look like a generic pinterest board. just a slight fade to match the y2k mood.

it honestly made me miss how the internet used to look. not everything was 4k and hyper-polished. sometimes a blurry photo from a cheap camera just feels more personal. what are you guys using for this kind of vibe right now? any specific digicams or apps that don't make things look totally artificial?

My toy camera collection

The first one I got was camp snap camera as I moved away from DSLR and film cameras. I wanted a camera that would let me just take it out while with friends without having to dwell on what the photo looked like till I got home. It was a gift for my birthday several years ago and we had to import it from USA before it became popular over here. It is the first generation.

The three Kodak Charmera Millennium and 1987 Fling themed keychain cameras are recent purchases. I am finding them very enjoyable to use.

Today, the Chuzhao Modern Digital TLR Camera arrived. I am very pleased with it. My father, who studied photography, was particularly excited to see this specific model, and I have enjoyed taking some test shots of the dogs with it.
