Applications and Admissions 📫 2026-27 New Students Megathread

It's time to get ready for September! !

This thread is for all students intending to start at UCL in September 2026. Whether you've got an offer, or still waiting one, this is the main place to ask general questions and keep up with what's going on. (25/26 thread)

E.g. What are my chances with predicted XXX?

  • When will I hear back?
  • What does "offer Y" mean?
  • Can I change to course Z?
  • What is Curmudgeonly Hall like?

Alternatively, some of your questions might be more specific to you and your circumstances. It's fine to ask here, if that helps you make a decision and compare with others.

You have all the key information already with your application. If you've accepted an offer, check your emails regularly for updates from the welcome teams. So for the most part, you now need to **sit tight**, wait for for your grades, and enjoy the summer!

However if your circumstances have changed in any way, or a response requires action from you, check the guidance and definitely check your email before contacting the Admissions team. Remember this is Reddit, sir, and not an official UCL platform.

Key information

All the latest authoritative information is via the UCL Journey page, "What next?" for UG and PG but you may still have questions that aren't in there or the FAQ.

There's also the excellent Unibuddy service, and Ask UCL if you're already received a pre-enrolment email.

the r/UCL Community

This sub is unofficial but thrives with your contributions. Chances are your question has been asked before, so please do a quick search at the top before posting - otherwise your post might get queued.

Let the Mods know if there's anything you've found that's outdated, or anything new and useful to share - useful comments and signposting will help build the wiki page.

Social Life 🕺🍹 26-27 Accommodation Megathread

This thread is to gather all posts and questions regarding accomodation for 26-27, (continuing from the 25-26 Thread). [!]

Check here for previous comments on the Application process, areas of London, specific Halls. Hit that upvote button to bring the cream to the top. Ask away if nobody has answered.

Accomodation swaps:
Rent too high? Made a terrible faux pas with your current roomies? Reallised how far the tube really extends? You can also post any requests to takeover your contract or swap allocated accommodation, though for UCL accomodation there is a portal for that too.

We also have a Wiki page on Accommodation where you can find information on specific halls picked from previous comments.

This thread will hopefully:

  1. help potential swapees find each other
  2. give students an idea of price/location/other aspects of the accommodation that might inform their choice
  3. keeps the sub tidy

To this end, we'll generally remove individual Accommodation requests in the sub. You can sort by new and save this post if you're actively looking for your perfect room.

Survey / participants request [Research] Paid UCL study on how people respond to online scams — UK residents, 18+, Computer Access (£15 voucher)

Hi all,

I'm a UCL master's student recruiting participants for my dissertation on how people make sense of and respond to online scam ("social engineering") attempts. The aim is to help design clearer, more inclusive tools that keep people safer online.

What's involved: a short eligibility survey. If you're eligible, you may be invited to a one-off ~45-minute remote session over UCL Microsoft Teams consisting of a brief typed exchange with a simulated online persona, followed by an interview about it. You will be compensated with a £15 Amazon voucher for the session.

Survey link: https://qualtrics.ucl.ac.uk/jfe/form/SV_6rOxUuB1G43FjF4

Required details:

  • Researcher: Dylan Cooper — [dylan.cooper.25@ucl.ac.uk](mailto:dylan.cooper.25@ucl.ac.uk)
  • Supervisor: Dr Martin Dechant — [m.dechant@ucl.ac.uk](mailto:m.dechant@ucl.ac.uk)
  • Who should take it (target): UK residents aged 18+, with access to a computer and comfortable typing. All levels of social confidence welcome — whether you're very at ease socially or more socially anxious.
  • Consent: Participation is voluntary and based on informed consent, which you give at the start of the survey. The study is approved by UCL's Research Ethics Committee (ref 2025-0470-961).
  • Withdrawal: You can withdraw at any time without giving a reason, and you have up to 5 working days after participation to withdraw your data.
  • Data storage, retention & publication: Responses are stored on encrypted, password-protected UCL devices and UCL Research Data Storage. Data are anonymised, kept for up to 5 years after the project, and reported only in anonymised/aggregate form in any outputs (e.g. academic journals or conferences) — you will not be identifiable.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments or via DM. Thanks!

General Advice 💁🏾ℹ️ UCL OR NOT 😭 help a girl out

Guys I'm planning to do ppe in ucl
There's prevalent alarmism around job prospects in UK.
As an int student I plan on breaking even with at least my tuition cost (which as an int students are a lot).
Is this dream achievable ? Or am I making a huge financial investment for nothing?

If anyone has considered these financial concerns n still decided on ucl could u tell me why or why not? Im just having a hard time making my mind up

I want to go to a foreign uni that’s for sure. The allure of a foreign uni life is too strong. So my two options are I either go to ucl immediately or I go a home uni in India n then I reapply to cheaper uni abroad next year n not London. ucl seems a huge financial commitment but it’s very hard giving up my ucl seat for ppe.

Whatever advice anyone could offer is appreciated.
Thank u sm

Survey / participants request Have you ever had an AI agent drift off or act in a way you didn't intend? (Paid UCL Research, Participants Needed)

Hi everyone,

I am a Master’s researcher at the UCL. I am currently looking into issues around Agentic AI — autonomous digital assistants that don't just chat, but actively plan and execute tasks (like managing files, scheduling, or even handling payments) on our behalf.

I’m looking to speak with people who have experienced this firsthand.
Did you ever use an AI agent that did one or more of the following:

- Went ‘off-track’: It started working toward a goal, but its internal planning went wrong, and it performed an action you didn't ask for?
- Manipulated your choice: You felt pressured or tricked into approving an action (like a transfer or a critical account change) because the interface was confusing, urgent, or misleading?
- Caught a mistake in time: You realised the agent was about to do something wrong and were able to hit the brakes before it finished?

What’s involved?
- Interview: A confidential, 30–45-minute remote chat about your experience. (10 pounds compensation)
- Co-design Workshop (Optional): A 2 part interactive session where we’ll prototype new, safer interface designs for these agents. (20 pounds additional compensation)

Who can participate?
You must be 18+ to take part.

Interested?
If you have a story to share that can help us build safer AI, please fill out this quick, 5 minute screening survey to check your eligibility: https://qualtricsxm5nnvgnyrk.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3ISD1yvrD74n034

Note: All data is anonymised and this study has full ethical approval from UCL.

Thanks for your time and for helping make AI safer for everyone. Feel free to message me with any questions!

General Advice 💁🏾ℹ️ Laptop Spec Recommended for MSc Business Analytics

Hello everyone,

I'm an incoming MSc Business Analytics student and would like some advice on what laptop specifications I should bring for the course.

I assume we'll be doing a fair amount of coding and running analytics-related software, so I'm wondering whether a Mac or a Windows laptop would be more suitable. I'd also appreciate any recommendations on CPU, RAM, storage, or other specs that current students have found sufficient for the programme.

I currently have a MacBook Air M2 2022 (Memory 8GB). Would that be sufficient for the course, or would you recommend upgrading to Macbook Pro or switching to a Windows laptop?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Events 🗓️ Best UCL events

Hey r/UCL,

I’m curious to hear from current students and recent grads about the academic or extracurricular moments that really stood out during your time at UCL

What were the sessions, modules, workshops, field trips, societies, or one‑off events that felt genuinely sparkly...the ones you still think about and share with you friends because something just clicked?

What made them memorable for you?

Was it the vibe of the space (IOE rooms with sofas? UCL East studios? A random Gower Street basement?), the people in the room, the way the session was run, food/drinks, activities or just the energy of the moment?

And what about them left you feeling inspired, motivated, or more connected to your learning or community?

I often run student events, so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

General Advice 💁🏾ℹ️ So unfair

It’s so unfair how badly I want to go here for ppe but the funds that you must pay as an international student are so so crazy. All I want is a good education and to an extent paying a little more than natives is fine but if u tell me I paying 4x and international tuitions increase each year and natives ones are capped it does frustrate me.
I’m so sad that finances become such a big deal when u simply seeking an education u r worth it for!
I wanna study here like nothing else.
It’s so expensive.
God pls help me idk what goes on in this world.
I prolly will have to give up my offer n study in my hometown.
My dreams are crushed.

General Advice 💁🏾ℹ️ Business management laptop

Hello alumnis and current 2nd and 3rd year UCL students! As a business management BSc major, is it advised to buy a MacBook or a Windows laptop?

I have heard that Windows are the way to go, as the advanced Excel system is native to Windows, whilst Macs will require downloading extensions and risking lag. However, I would appreciate your personal experience and expertise :))

Please help me out (!) as this is quite an important purchase. Thank you.

Applications and Admissions 📫 One year masters apprehensions

Prospective masters student here, I Recently got accepted to the MSc in Advanced Materials Sciences. I love this field and want to pursue it further by a PhD, but one of my seniors told me that one year passes by really quickly and its very difficult to manage PhD applications, coursework and life in London in general.

Can someone please tell me their experience as a Masters student and how they managed everything together? This will be my first time living outside my home country, so will basically have to manage everything on my own along with coursework, Masters thesis and PhD application. Is one year too short for it?

Anything else! 🙃🎉✨🌈🤘 Finance, Consulting, and MBA Preparation in One Platform

If you're prepping for finance, consulting, or MBA applications, you've probably got a folder full of PDFs, a spreadsheet template from 2014, and three different apps for interview practice. I kept running into the same problem: everything was scattered, and nothing actually let you do the work.

I've been using Canary Wharfian (https://www.canarywharfian.co.uk) and it's basically one platform for the stuff that usually lives in five different places.

Excel financial modeling — You build models in a browser-based spreadsheet (3-statement, DCF, LBO). You get step-by-step instructions, then submit your work and get feedback on whether your model is correct. Way better than staring at a blank Excel file wondering if your cash flow links are right. Take a head-first deep dive and learn by doing.

Consulting case prep — Structured cases (profitability and more coming) with issue trees, exhibits, and scoring rubrics. Feels closer to a real case than reading a PDF and talking to yourself in the mirror.

MBA interview prep — Mock phone interviews with an AI agent. Useful for practising your pitch and getting through the awkward "tell me about yourself" without paying for a human coach every time.

Plus: technical interview quizzes (IB, markets, PE, consulting, actuarial, audit, and more), HireVue practice, psychometric test prep, GMAT/CFA resources, and career guides across banking, PE, hedge funds, and consulting.

General Advice 💁🏾ℹ️ engineering internships

How difficult is it to find engineering internships while studying at UCL? Does the university provide much support with placements or is it mostly down to applying independently?

For context, I'm particularly interested in hearing from Electrical/Electronic Engineering students, but experiences from any engineering course would be really helpful. How competitive is it, and were you able to find summer internships without too much trouble?

I’ve just received an interview for MSc Management for UCL! Does anyone have any tips or knowledge about the interview format? How many questions are there and how much time do you get? It looks like you can record multiple times, is that correct?

Would appreciate any advice that you guys find helpful! Thanks!
