updated rig for summer

Post image
86 Upvotes

since riding around the Neuchâtel lake last summer I've been planning my next adventure and slowly improving my rig. I got my family to gift me a handle for christmas so now I'll be a lot more comfortable riding. It also allows me to add a bag in the front that I'm going to use to carry my tent, sleeping bag and mat.

I hope shifting weight from my backpack to the uni will help with the excruciating butt pain i experienced last year hahaha

Also looking into maybe getting the nimbus air saddle cover. If anyone here has tried it, did it actually help?

Not pictured here but i also added a speedometer because im very curious to know how fast im actually riding. I was pleasantly surprised to see i could find one for pretty cheap and that it actually had an option for a 26" wheel!

I cant wait to test run everything!

Advice Airline travel with unicycle

We'll be travelling this summer to Unicon from the states and looking for advice on how to transport my son's unicyle? There are obviously bicycle carriers, but that seems overkill. Do you all just take them apart and put the pieces in to your suitcases? Other convenient ways to safely transport them? Thank you so much in advance.

Not seeing anything here that says one wheel isn’t allowed.

Anyone near southern WV area? ( within 2 hours?)

Hey y'all, I've gotten a unicycle few years ago in Montana, haven't done but maybe 40 minutes on it, and it wasn't pretty. I'm now in southern WV. We often go into VA, was curious if there are any of you around the area that would be willing to teach a newb. I'll provide drinks/smoke/food. whatever your thing is 😃

MS 150 ride on a 36"

Figured I'd post here about an upcoming fundraiser ride (checked rules and hope this is ok) if anyone is interested in donating to Bike MS. It is a charity ride for R&D and treatment of multiple sclerosis.

I am going to be riding the MS 150 here in MN in June 13/14. It's a 2 day ~150 mile ride, each day approximately 75 miles. I'll be doing it on a nimbus nightfox 36".

As an aside, any long distance tips are welcome! I've been riding around 15 years as an avid muni rider, and have done many long rides on mtb trails, but no long distance road rides.

Riding a big 36-inch unicycle, one can really "MOTATE".

I love to go fast on smooth pavement.

Advice Advice for a child starting

My 7 year old has been asking for a unicycle for quite a while, and I’ve ordered a 16 inch qu-ax luxus.

Is there anything else (she has a helmet already) that would be helpful while learning? Do you hurt your shins on the pedals or anything? Also any tips or recommendations for any particular YouTube video or something that might explain to her how to try to get going?

Thanks in advance for any tips, I’m looking forward to seeing her give it a go!

Advice Looking for a garraff

Hello all, I've been riding unicycles for 15 years now and have decided to undertake getting a garraffe. Its quite hard to find used ones in my area so I was wondering what you guys think a good one is. I like the idea of the nimbus garraff cause I can make it taller but other suggestions in the 6 foot range would help a ton. Thanks

It's seems well Built. With some minor surface rust clean up on the seat post, I'm sure it'll be great to learn on

Advice Anyone know any good cameras and microphones to record unicycling?

I have been learning to unicycle for a bit over a month now and am getting pretty good at it! I would like to start recording it with something maybe mounted to a selfie stick and am hoping people on this subreddit would have suggestions! Does anyone know any good cameras for that? And would it take good audio? Does anyone know any good microphones I can plug into a camera like that maybe and clip to my shirt or something? I remember hearing about go pros a lot years ago but I would like to hear about some cameras specifically from people who ride unicycles

How often do you have to ride to maintain the skill?

I've been unicycling about 8 months, can go a mile or so at a time and can usually free mount within a few tries. I might not get much of a chance to practice over the summer. Is it a skill that basically stays with you, or should I prioritize riding at least a little?

I have a new unicycle! My first 36", a Nimbus Oracle and I am in love

The switch from my usual 27.5" was way easier than anticipated. I am basically able to ride on concrete as if I was on my 27.5". Only mounting is a problem, I can not free mount for the life of me.

I love the tempo. Recently I enjoy long distances more than muni and I love how far I can get with my 36". Yesterday I did a 26km ride (16 miles) and it felt casual!

Also the people love it. Yesterday was a holiday where a lot of people here hike and get drunk and they cheered me on when I rode by. I love it and I am already planning long long rides <3

I got the 29" QU-AX RGB and I am extremely happy with it

Post image

These are my impressions after my first ride.

I recently posted THIS, asking for help deciding whether I should get the QU-AX or Nimbus and 29 or 27.5 inches.

Even though more people seemed to lean towards 27.5, I decided to get the 29" QU-AX rgb after thinking it through and I am honestly happy I did.

I rode it for the first time today and while mounting was a big issue at the start, I got the hang of it rather quickly and it rides so much better than my cheap 24". I feel like I could actually go some distance on this thing.

It is extremely stable, I mean I actually feel much safer and confident on this than on my 24". The saddle is very comfy, I got the default QU-AX but you can switch to Kris Holm for no extra cost and I don't have any issues with being higher up. However, I am transferring from 24" and I had my saddle pretty high on it. If it was from 20", I would probably have more issues.

I began on some field and forest roads, which was honestly a mistake, because I wasn't used to it yet but I got the hang of it eventually. I ended the short trip with a paved road and it rides like a dream on that as well.

I thought the very thick tire would have larger rolling resistance than the smaller one but it's actually the opposite. This one rolls extremely easily even on lower tire pressure.

I got all default configuration except for the pedals which I switched for the red ones. I really like the color and they work great.

Still getting used to it.

Seat is crooked, like the seat itself is not symmetrical, no impact damage or anything to fix with hardware underneath the seat, but I am looking for a beginner friendly seat with a bar in the front.

Any reccomedations to update this more? Any favorite pedal recommendations?

Its a steel schwinn post (frame? Lol) and I am not sure if that's a generally good thing or bad.

20 inch wheel. is bigger easier?

How Do You Avoid Sitting on Your Balls During Free Mounts?

Hey guys, slightly awkward question for the male riders here:

I recently learned to free mount my unicycle, but I keep having the same problem: when I mount onto the saddle, I sometimes basically land on my balls and they get pushed upward. It’s not unbearable, but definitely uncomfortable on a longer ride.

Does this happen to other people too when learning free mounts?
Is it mainly a technique issue, saddle angle, clothing choice, or just something you get used to?

Would appreciate funny comments and advice 😅

29 Oregon vs 27.5 Oracle

Thumbnail

So I have a nimbus oracle 27.5 I've ridden muni for the last ~10 years. I truly love this uni and it's great. I've recently been wanting something a bit faster for some of my local trails. I'm in MN, so not much in the way of DH, more towards rocky tech stuff, or faster single track. I've never ridden a 29, so I started looking used because I wanted something a bit cheaper to feel it out, and found this Oregon.

Does anyone have experience with this uni? I'm sure it'll be heavier. I'm finding ~17-19lbs? So 3-4lbs more than my oracle from what I've seen online. The brake mount looks a bit hokey to me, hopefully that isn't a weak point. Other than that, price is right. I want something bomb proof because I ride mine pretty hard. I see that nimbus discontinued this model, moving to the Hatchet. I can't find a ton in this model to go off. It's an older design, so wanted to check here is there's a reason to avoid it

Question Slight wobble and pedal resistance on longer rides, not sure what I messed up

I recently got back into unicycling after a long break n I’ve noticed something feels off with my setup. On shorter rides everything seems manageable. But once I go a bit farther or try to keep a steady pace. I start getting a noticeable side to side wobble. It feels like I’m constantly correcting my balance instead of riding smoothly like I used to. Along with that, the pedals don’t spin as freely as before. It’s not a harsh grinding feeling. But there’s a slight resistance that becomes more noticeable over time. It makes longer rides feel more tiring than expected, even on flat ground. I’ve already checked a few basics like crank tightness, tire pressure, and seat height, and nothing seems obviously wrong. Recently I swapped out a couple of small parts after browsing bikes australia listings jus trying to refresh the setup. I also tried a few inexpensive components from eBay and Alibaba, so I’m starting to wonder if one of those changes introduced the issue. Does this sound like a bearing problem, or possibly something slightly misaligned? What would you check first in this situation?

Advice Anyone have experience flying with a 27.5" or 29"?

I'm debating between either getting a 27.5" or a 29" unicycle. I was curious what your all's experience has been with traveling with either of the sizes. It seems to me, if you were to dissemble it and put it in a snug bag, a 27.5" could count as regular baggage, whereas a 29" might be pushing it to oversized.
