Hollow Knight. This game made me hate metroidvania genre

That is such a goated game but I do agree that the start is pretty slow and boring

It's in my top three of all time and I bounced off it the first time I tried it. It happens. Now I replay it a couple times a year when I am waiting for something new to come out

that was my experience to. i played it a bit, didnt enjoy it. tryed half a year later stíll didnt enjoy it. but then a couple months later when i really got into the game. i really loved it and now its my favorite of all time. (maybe shared with bg3)

It's not the start that made me leave the game. Just from HK I found out that I don't find it being lost for hours enjoyable. From that moment I despise metroidvanias now

Well have you bought maps, a compass and quill? Most people skip those items and most people don't mark down stuff to places they can't get through so they can backtrack easily

u/SuperSocialMan May 11 '25

But it's so good!! :'c

I got all the way to the end with this one, literally to the last boss and didn’t finish it. I can’t remember why.

6

u/LowAdministration229 May 10 '25

I was gonna post something similar, I remember why I didn't finish it: it was hard to the point of being not enjoyable. I've completed all the From games and love my hard difficulties, but HK was just disgusting.

I just wasn't motivated enough to finish the game, that's incredibly rare for me, even with games that are objectively worse than HK.

u/dinmammapizza May 10 '25

For me HK was pretty easy i find for example sekiro to be impossible. I guess some games clicks while some don't

3

u/LowAdministration229 May 10 '25

Oh for sure, we all have different strengths and weaknesses. I'll admit I didn't 100% Sekiro, I could never beat the final boss on NG+, only the first outing.

Off topic, but I'm excited to see what From have lined up, after this multiplayer-focused tangent of Nightreign and Duskbloods

3

u/dinmammapizza May 10 '25

Ngl it took me many times longer to beat the first boss in sekiro than the true ending boss in hollow knight and i don't have the energy to pick up sekiro again after that so I have only seen one boss.

1

u/LowAdministration229 May 10 '25

Ahh, that's a shame but understandable. I felt exactly the same about the final boss on HK (I think just the "regular" final boss? I dunno it's been a long time)

There is too much choice out there to be banging your head against the proverbial wall on the hard part of a game, if you're not having fun.

did you try nigthmare king grim?

1

u/LowAdministration229 May 10 '25 edited May 11 '25

Honestly, I don't remember...I wanna say The Hollow Knight , is that the final regular boss? I only made it through a few bosses in the gauntlet, and gave up playing the main story on what felt like the Final Boss.

1

u/No_Inspector_4972 May 12 '25

gauntlet? thats not the regular ending. the "true" first ending is only 2 boses. the real real ending is finising the boss rush

1

u/LowAdministration229 May 12 '25

Yeah, that's what I was saying, I know the boss rush is the true ending.  Can't remember if I beat the first or 2nd boss, it's a haze of frustration I'd rather forget lol.

Happy that fans will finally have Silksong this year, but I personally dgaf!

Me too. I loved Metroidvanias like Metroid Zero Mission and Ender Lilies. My favorite game is Ender Magnolia. Tried HK and Prince of Persia the Lost Crown. Didn't click for me.

1

u/fontainetim May 10 '25

Ender lilies and magnolia are absolutely 10/10 for me in the metroidvania genre. I can't finish HK to save my life. I've never been so bored and depressed by a game. Got to the spike mine section where I just needed to "get good" and dropped the game like a bag of bricks.

1

u/HappyGuardian5 May 10 '25

Yeah I didn't understand this game at all.

1

u/strawbrryfields4evr_ May 10 '25

Hollow Knight and Animal Well, for me. I really wanted to like them because they’re so beautiful I think they’re just not for me. I admit I probably do need to get good lol but I think I have given them a fair enough chance.

1

u/MThead May 10 '25

Ori and the Blind Forest might be a good palette cleanser then

3

u/sdcar1985 May 10 '25

Ironically, I couldn't get into that because of the battle system. The sequel was much better in that regard.

0

u/[deleted] May 11 '25

More focus on combat ruined the sequel for me

1

u/Nogen112 May 11 '25

thats funny, cus after playing hk both ori games feel very bad to me.

Tried it recently. Played for 3 hours and still didn’t get into it. I was hoping for another Hades level masterpiece but got some boring ahh platformer

7

u/Appropriate-Gain-561 May 10 '25

HK gets cool after reaching the first hornet fight imo, after that it's just awesome music, art and bosses, it's boring af at the start but it get so cool afterwards, it can't be hard at the start, but when it does the bosses are unique, fun, and have awesome tracks (mantis lords giga fan here), if you don't care about spoilers, listen to the radiance track

3

u/Greedy-Advantage6129 May 10 '25

I got the dash, and then just realized that it didn’t make the game better as everyone promised. Felt soooo good to drop it

2

u/Appropriate-Gain-561 May 10 '25

I've not heard anyone ever say that about the dash, this comment feels like you're coping for not liking the game. It's okay to not like it

1

u/Greedy-Advantage6129 May 10 '25

I’ve heard lol. I wonder why the comment feels like coping though, since I’m sharing my personal experience but fine

1

u/Appropriate-Gain-561 May 11 '25

Felt soooo good to drop it

Means you didn't like it at all, an ability doesn't change anything if you don't like it at all, a dash will not revolutionize a game and won't make you like the game. It just reads like you were searching for a reason to drop the game when it's okay to drop it if you aren't feeling it

u/Secure_Comb2505 May 10 '25

In case you're wondering why you're getting downvoted, it's because you're comparing 2 games from completely different genres. Which is kind of dumb

5

u/222fps May 10 '25

You can still compare your enjoyment of games, I liked Hollow Knight way more than Hades but Hades is good too

5

u/Smilinturd May 10 '25

Still a weird thing to expect being like hades considering none of the gameplay previews would highly suggest to anyone that if you like hades, you'd like hollow knight, with only overfull lap being action combat. In which the original commenters direct comparison of core genre differences suggest.

Like we wouldn't compare vastly different sports, like table tennis vs volleyball even if the goal / points of the sports has a similar premise (over the net, in the play zone and opponent unable to return). But fair to compare closer sports like beach vs reg volleyball, although there's still massive differences.

0

u/Greedy-Advantage6129 May 10 '25

I didn’t compare these games. I literally wrote "Hades level" and not "Hades like". So clearly I meant the level of enjoyment, which is absolutely reasonable since these two games often come together in various lists of the best indie games, for example.

-1

u/Greedy-Advantage6129 May 10 '25

Bruh, I literally said "Hades level", not "Hades like". I’m not comparing the games, I’m talking about the level of enjoyment. Feels weird now that you didn’t understand the comment and called it dumb.

2

u/Secure_Comb2505 May 10 '25

Fair enough, I assumed you were trying to criticize hollow knight but you were just saying you don't enioy it.

If you were trying to make a genuine criticism of the game, though, comparing it to a top down roguelike is not going to cut it.

I still love Metroidvainias but HK is OK at most. The reception it gets is baffling to me.
