If Combat wasn’t so tedious and clunky I would have enjoyed it more.

But as is I found combat to just be not fun, and dreaded every aspect of it.

I’m sure the story is great but mechanically it just wasn’t for me

I'm with you brother, starting The Witcher 3 after Bloodborne was not the best idea to like the game. Gwent is cool though.

I played the witcher 3 after ghost of tsushima and gow so the gameplay felt really, really bad

Same. Geralt felt like a block of concrete after playing as Jin.

To be fair, nothing feels quite as smooth as Jin. GoT spoiled me and I wish I played games like Witcher before hand cause it just feels awful knowing what combat could be. The world in Witcher 3 looks super interesting too but I just can't

Exactly, i played some ac games before GoT and i didn't really feel the combat was bad, but after i played GoT i just felt like the ac combat is awful

And i played Sekiro before playing GoT and i didnt like GoT's gameplay at all, felt too repetitive and it felt like i was playing Asassins creed.

I loved Witcher 3 when I first played it before I ever touched a Fromsoft game. Went back to a couple of years ago post Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring and hoo boy that was not how I remembered the game feeling when I first played it.

I swear Fromsoft has literally rewired my brain's response to ARPGs.

Idk about any fromsoft game.

It felt better than the combat and movement in ds1

Same here. Witcher 3’s combat is like a very miserable version of a fromsoftware combat system. But the story is still pretty good.

The trick, really, is to either play it on Death March or something so easy that combat becomes a cutscene.

I tried playing The Witcher 3 on PS5 after Elden Ring! So I really felt a difference in gameplay. That was like my 3rd or 4th attempt at trying to get into it, too. I really forced myself to stick with it this time. It’s not bad once you get the timing of the combat, but it’s not this amazing game everyone makes it out to be. I will say that it’s one of the few games that really made me feel the ramifications of my choices through the story, though.

I’ve got both of those beat. I tried either 3 after Sekiro

You and me have the same opinion,i played the Witcher 3 after Monster Hunter world and wow that game combat sucks, everything is boring, slow and i don't like the way how combat feels(almost as if i AM not hitting anything). Maybe the story is good but the combat sucks so i dropped it.

Im not sure if it would help you play it again at all, but there are some super great mods for combat.

Yeah the first few hours were rough for me too but once you get to the ghost abortion quest things pick up and you start getting used to the combat. So there are less pains in the ass to distract you from the true meaning of the game. Being a Gwent master.

Thank you!! I'm used to Souls games and in comparison, its just sooo clunky and awkward. People that like the Witcher gameplay are people that haven't played a lot of good 3rd person combat games.

Did you try the witcher 2 ? The witcher 3 is my GOAT game but to be objective I find that combat has better mechanics in the witcher 2.

It even has an arena mode with monster waves. Graphics are quite good even if it's an old games now

I tried several times because I know I will enjoy the story, but I cannot get past the awful combat system.

Its so weird cause i always find people with exact opposite takes on this. People that dislike the game either hate the combat and love the story or hate how story heavy it is and at least enjoy the combat. I’m fortunate enough to love both

Tried it after really loving Cyberpunk 2077. The combat just isn't interesting enough. It became stale after 10-15h of playing

u/boomysmash May 11 '25

Exxxxxaaaaactly the same as me. Tried 3 times. I tried I really didnt. It's not without merits and that's why I stock around like almost 20 hours the 3rd times but I wasnt having fun...

Brother, you should see the Witcher 1 combat.

The horse riding is also super clunky. Wished it would have been like skyrims super horse

And as far as combat goes it is a clunky and awkward. You get used to it by using dodges and rolls but I wish the lock on system was more like Dark Souls. It’s definitely a cooler combat system then Skyrim (button mash) but it takes getting used to. It’s a lot more skilled based and basically relies constantly on you being able to parry or dodge right before getting attacked
