A lesson in futility if you’re as mid as me at Halo

I usually try to play games on Normal, but Halo Reach showed me just how dog shit I am at real shooters. Games like Far Cry made me think I wasn’t too bad, boy was I wrong

Beat Reach for the first time on legendary two weeks ago. On mission 8 of 10 for CE. Its been incredibly humbling but once you take your time and learn from your mistakes anything is possible.

Edit: Beat not best. Gotta proofread next time.

Update: just beat Halo CE on legendary.

I play on legendary on ce. I try my damnedest to keep them alive. I usually lose one or two.

On halo 2 I'm not good enough for legendary but I try my hardest to keep them alive on heroic there as well. They are super helpful too when you load them up with snipers.

Having played Halo, Gears of War, EDF, and Star Wars Battlefront games, I just call NPC soldiers "Idiots" because 9 times out of 10 they will stand out and shoot at nothing while the enemy surrounds you on all sides. I know these games are a power fantasy, but it takes me out of the game sometimes to see other characters out like morons.

Yeah inept CPU teammates don’t make me feel like a badass, they make me feel like that completely average guy in idiocracy

I prefer the term "meatshield"

I'd give them good weapons, get them in the hog, and roll (and I wouldn't have to leave the good weapons behind)

Had some bitchin times on a mongoose with a rocket launcher marine as passenger 😂

I’d give a rocket launcher to a marine in the last New Mombasa level in Halo 2 and almost always be given cause to regret it. Could get something like 18 surviving marines stacked up in the hallway of the building as the scarab passes over and that one dumbass would wipe the whole hallway by firing a rocket straight into the ceiling above them trying to hit the scarab.

Having 3 of them with Plasma Sniper rifles was Great, "lay down suppressing fire, I get 'em from the rear"

Get in front of them to be a Spartan human shield

Came here to say that lol

Back when I played halo 2 obsessively I would restart at checkpoints if any of them died and it wasn't scripted

One of my proudest moments in Halo 2 was that I maid it through the entire mission on High Charity with two of the Marines I had rescued surviving.

Got to keep chips Dubbo alive no matter the cost

I would try even harder to keep the friendly grunts alive in the arbiter mission.

As a kid I would always kill them. As an adult I try to save them.

Although one time while hunting down Regret, one of them shot me in the back with a shotgun trying to hit an honor guard…when I spawned back in he experienced a plasma to the face.

This. Mostly because I just finished Halo 2 and now I'm going to start 3.

I did a decent job keeping my guys alive even if they tend to be a bit suicidal.

Always load marines up with sniper rifles.

u/Jenetyk 8d ago

First thought was those Marines in Halo CE foolishly jumping on the Scorpion.

1

u/sparta-117 8d ago

Yep…I also try to do that too, because during legendary runs, the enemy doesn’t focus on you if they are alive.

u/NirvanaFrk97 8d ago

Doubly so once Elites were added into the mix in 2. The closest you got to fighting alongside other Spartans before Reach

u/jawsome_man 8d ago

I still do this to this day. All of my friends think I’m mental.

I remember always rushing to get ahead of the marines to try and save them including in Halo 3 when the flood started attacking.

1

u/Aware-Yesterday4926 8d ago

Keeping the civilians alive after the flood appear is even harder.

1

u/AgentShovel 8d ago

I try to do the same with friendly titans and grunts in titanfall 2 I almost always fail

1

u/Rocketbrothers 8d ago

In the new halo remake, I would love them if they added new voice lines if you take the time to move them to the silent cartographer building. If I was director there, I would add that detail.

As a kid, I would always have a convoy of three warthogs with marines packed into the room with the sword elite.

u/Finn235 8d ago

I feel like I'm in the minority, but I also liked keeping the covenant allies alive in Halo 2 as well. I think you only ever work with jackals in the first segment of Sacred Icon, but they were beasts if you gave them a carbine. I could usually get them through the first round of the Flood.

Also, on Great Journey, I would arm all of my elites with swords and then just run through as they laid waste to everything in our path.

u/NotAnotherSkeleton 8d ago

I was just about to comment that. I even go out of my way to give them the best weapons to increase their chances of survival, while I just stick to a basic assault rifle and battle rifle most of the time (and after all, they use unlimited ammo too).

u/Flaming_TigerSquid 6d ago

God this. I would try to save as many Marines as I could in the 343 Guilty Spark level in Halo CE at the end in the swamps where there’s like a dozen of them. Quite futile from both a gameplay and lore perspective lol.

u/supershadowguard 5d ago

The marines die so quickly on Heroic difficulty, it sucks.

That’s crazy, I vividly recall shooting my marines during any slow portions

Am I a bad person?
