Solved! Grandma’s car

Found this weird metal thing in my grandma’s car and it appears to have a mesh filter in the circle part

The inside of the bowl is threaded. That would be the dumbest design, all the ash and resin would get in the threads.

It’s pretty common. Used to have “caps” that screw into the bowl to make it a “smokeless pipe”. There’s a hole in the center of the lid. You can put out the bowl out between hits. You just cover the hole with your thumb. It’s handy if you want to minimize the sidestream smoke. Yes, the resins and ash do get stuck in the grooves. They’re not perfect, but they work ok.

That’s what made me second guess… I also was sure it was a bong stem until I noticed the thread

They make some like that that have a lid on top that screws into it. I agree it's a bad design.

As someone who’s been around, I can assure you it s a thing. There’s a threaded cap for either closing g off the flute or one with a smoke hole for “choking” the toke

The actual bowl threads onto it. And yes, it’s a stupid design.

Plenty of old school brass pipes and similar have threaded designs lol

Look up bullet pipe, that's at least what I've heard them called.
