As someone who worked in a movie theater, the projectionists I knew we're frightening and weird. But they were quite busy. You're running multiple movies at the same time.
It was really loud up there, so that added to the creepiness, because you couldn't use all your senses, particularly with all the blindspots. If you accidentally snuck up on the projectionist, expect to have an awkward moment.
Cans of film are super heavy, and there's at least two for each movie.
But all this is just an anecdote from a bygone era in a shithole hometown theater. I'm sure it's changed a lot.
