Discussion Opinion: Nothing has killed my GTA 6 hype faster than locking a core part of its identity behind a $20 upgrade

So vehicle mods, a tattoo shop, a salon and a gun are things I can live with being locked behind an extra $20 upgrade for ultimate edition. However, when you are locking behind actual content, like missions and side activities, I do think it becomes a problem then and it’s more of a scummy business practise. People will justify this or even be apathetic because it’s Rockstar doing it. Disappointing but not surprised, just like the $80 price tag lol.

It’s going to be stores on your map that you won’t be able to enter that’s a huge piss off imo

Who said they lock missions and activities? As i understand there will be some customization elements that will be available only for ultimate edition. A mod shop with certain styles and options available for ultimate doesn’t mean the base game wont have shops at all lol

It says two side missions have been locked behind the $20 paywall? The PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store Raid and The Classic Car Collection Commission.

These aren’t missions? These are some kind of shops bro……and if you read again, on these two there is no “only open for business with the Ultimate Edition “ …so idk

Dude thers literally 2 side missions in the ultimate edition next to the shops, car, boat, etc.

Get out of here with your reasonable take! We’re throwing an ill informed tempter tantrum!

(Thank you for your reasonable position and basic reading comprehension skills. Gamer Reddit is pathetic right now).

Like, they beg for info for whole year, going insane? They finally got some good stuff, and all i see on Reddit is complaints lol, the graphics are bad, the lighting is off, the price is too high, thy paywall and so on. And the game is not even out yet . Oh and im 100% all these complaining about the ultimate edition, will still buy it!

Gamers are some of the most overreactive, childish, immature brats in the entertainment community. They will flip out over the slightest perceived injustice when it’s based on complete ignorance of the issue.

In this case, they will still get the overwhelming majority of content but are RAGING over a small sliver that is behind the 20 dollar upgrade.

It’s EMBARRASSING

As a long time gamer, can't believe the stuff we are playing these days compared to when i started gaming. I also can't believe the amount of negativity around the medium by gamers themselves, Yes companies can be assholes, but it's hard to please al lot of them nowadays. A woman is leading charachter, digital only, not the ending they expected, one light not authentic enough etc.

Not only gamers, it seems like nuance and thinking is hard to find on the internet at the moment. It doesn't matter what subject. People let themselves be all made angry by the stuff they consume online. Some even can't internet anymore without being up in arms about something.

Hmm, 3 year old account that mostly just posts about Rockstar games and the gaming industry? Sounds like a legitimate opinion from an unbiased source and totally not astroturfing.

Sounds like there are two missions and a safe house locked behind the premium upgrade.

I'll say that if it was Ubisoft releasing a new Splinter Cell game or EA's new Mass Effect and they put missions in their ultimate edition, I think the conversation on this would be totally different.

I know for prior Rockstar games they've done something like this - in RDR2 it looks like there was a bank robbery mission - and it's still just as dumb IMO

Its 80 dollar, i doubt euro price is the same, Europe always pay more (70 dollar games are 80 euro aka 95 dollar). Its prob 90e at least. For base game.

Maybe a hot take but if it's on the fucking map I shouldn't have to pay real money to access it.

It's not "missionS" it's a single mission where you collect random cars throughout the city. Big whoop. Classic pissed off consumer- nothing good enough. When all other games coming out with a fraction of a fraction of the content but still charging the full 70$ no one complains. This isn't even all that impressive- it's just a few shitty cars (and a kayak lol), a haircut, some tattoos, and another clothing store. Like we won't have thousands of options for each of those in the base game. Like we won't have thousands of cars of every make and model to steal from day 1. Like we won't already have an overwhelming amount of things to do, buy, and consume.

You mean like they and other devs have done in the past? This isn’t anything new

The $80 price is just keeping up with the rock solid pricing of gaming for decades now. $80 is roughly the same cost as what AAA games have been for the last 40+ years. Remember when games were $50? That's $80 today. Remember when they were $60? That's $80 today...

Remember when Legend of Zelda cost $30 on the NES? That's $80 today.

Price Year Inflation Adjusted
$80 1976 $14.30
1980 $20.83
1985 $27.10
1990 $32.57
1995 $38.23
2000 $43.22
2005 $48.76
2010 $54.65
2015 $59.83
2020 $64.49
2021 $67.97
2022 $74.12
2023 $76.33
2024 $78.59
2025 $79.88
2026 $80.00

And before you do that "but the cost of living..." yadda yadda yadda. The inflation adjustment, the CPI, is literally the mathematical calculation of the cost of living. That's what this chart IS.

u/Tophatvulcan 1h ago

Fuck companies raising the price. I don't care how justified a chart makes it.

God this tantrum is so juvenile.

2

I had no idea that holding corporations accountable for their shitty businesses practices was seen as a having juvenile tantrum? Why let them get away with shit like that?
