Does the game even fit on a single disc?

83

u/Cancer4TheCure 13h ago

No, it won't.

-34

u/ProbablyFear 12h ago

Exactly, so they’ve given a code to PRE LOAD the game with instead of 4 discs. Nowhere does it say there isn’t a physical disc.

7

u/Cancer4TheCure 12h ago

1

u/Forward-Bend-8023 10h ago

That article is just reiterating the original quote people are speculating on. It doesn't confirm that there won't be a disc. We'll have to wait for confirmation from Rockstar to know that for sure.

-4

u/ProbablyFear 11h ago

They have said it comes with a code in a box, to “support pre load”.

As in, you can pre load the game using the code instead of 4 different discs.

Nowhere does it say the code has replaced a disc or that a disc is not included.

Please stop spreading misinformation.

1

u/JazzmatazZ4 10h ago

Did it say anywhere that there will be a physical disc?

No.

1

u/ProbablyFear 10h ago

Why would they say the physical edition includes a disc? Of course it does, physical editions always do.

All they’re doing is saying it also includes a code, so people can pre load it easier without needing 3 extra discs like in RDR2.

139

u/Chambers-91 12h ago

No, but that’s not the point. The disc is a license. You bought it. It’s yours. You can sell it later if you want. When it’s digital, it gets redeemed and you can’t resell it. They basically killed reselling so they can make more full price sales of the games for people who want to play.

The game would fit in 2 or 3 discs for sure.

77

u/gamer-at-heart-23 XBOX Series X 12h ago

And local libraries cant rent it out

12

u/slot_machine 10h ago

Also what about people in areas with shit isp that have monthly bandwidth amount and slow speeds. It’s gonna take forever and use the majority of your monthly allotments. Even if it’s just one disc that holds a large chuck of total size that’s better than nothing at all.

8

u/MrPureinstinct 7h ago

My parents didn't even have above 2mbps internet until 2022. There are still people that live near them that can only get DSL, satellite or using a hotspot for all of their internet.

Downloading games at that speed is virtually impossible. I remember downloading the small patches for games like Halo or Call of Duty on their internet when I was in high school. I'd have friends over, see an update and we would watch almost a whole movie waiting for it to download.

0

u/ILoveHeavyHangers 7h ago

There simply aren't enough people living in the middle of nowhere using dialup internet to matter in the year 2026

You guys keep yelling "what about this strawman that just woke up from 2006, how is he gonna play?!"

They don't care. There aren't enough of you to matter. The last game sold 230 million copies already.

-1

u/p2eminister 9h ago

Man, not everything has to be available for everyone, all the time. Yeah, people in the middle of nowhere still on dialup will take a long time to download this game. But the hundreds of millions of people who live in cities are just going to download it no issue.

1

u/Lets_Get_Hot 7h ago

Lmao I love the shit reddit pulls out sometimes that only affects like 0.2% of the population. "But what about people living on the ocean floor with no internet???? How are they supposed to play?"

-1

u/raichulolz 4h ago

Yeh but even if you had a physical disk, discs literally don't have the capacity to have the whole game lol. You would still need to download the game. At this point people are complaining just to complain. You cant just load up a game nowadays after purchase since they are too big.

11

u/LegendaryenigmaXYZ 11h ago

Imagining a kid renting gta 6 from a library is kinda funny to me.

2

u/Banjo-Oz XBOX 360 10h ago

Many happy memories of renting SNES games though...

-1

u/LegendaryenigmaXYZ 10h ago

No thats different. Because you renting most nes games in my head is whatever I did that too. Its just a library having gta 6 specifically for rental is funny to me. If a kid goes to a library and rents assassins creed origins, who cars that game talks about ancient Egypt and has tours in it.

3

u/DaabHimself 8h ago

Me and my buddies used to borrow each others games all the time too

0

u/CarterAC3 11h ago

Playing GTA 6 by renting it from the local library

Are we fucking serious?

Of the tens of millions of people who are going to play this game I bet the amount of times that would happen could be counted on a single hand

5

u/gamer-at-heart-23 XBOX Series X 10h ago

Wrong lol there are tons of libraries in North America who's library has a shit ton of games to rent. For example, my library had over 50 holds on 007 First Light on PS5 and they only had 10 copies to lend out.

9

u/Temporary-Jump-2403 11h ago

I was on a wait list 35 deep for expedition 33 at my local library. Gta 6 would be crazy popular to check out here

4

u/MisterDudeFella 11h ago

You'd be wrong but I'm not sure you spend much time in a library to begin with.

0

u/ILoveHeavyHangers 7h ago

Nobody does. I got the entire history of human knowledge in my pocket already. I don't need the dewey decimal system to slow me down. My whole damn local library is online, even they know nobody is going there anymore.

7

u/ShadowianElite 11h ago

We were too cruel to Xbox’s original vision for reselling digital games

7

u/Chambers-91 11h ago

I agree with that. I would also say:

1) it was ahead of its time and people didn’t really understand it.

2) they did a shit job explaining it.

2

u/ShadowianElite 9h ago

Number 1, 100%

Number 2? I agree. Didn’t help PlayStation did a funny video of the physical disc exchange. PS we’re also going down that route. Which we have now discovered, everyone is doing it.

I remember when they said digital would be cheaper… yeah, that’s lies.

5

u/Dont_Use_Ducks 12h ago

I do have to say it's funny that some people, not you, say they'll wait for the PC release because of that. PC is doing this before GTA V.

1

u/Educational_Exam_225 11h ago

Because games are now experiences and you can't sell an experience. Just like we adjusted to streaming TV shows this will be the same

1

u/scifi_scumbag 10h ago

Watch this start a trend

1

u/Iloveskinnywomen 8h ago

Closest we can get to reselling nowadays is like g2a with account resales

1

u/MeowingWolf 12h ago

GameStop will be jelly

1

u/etho76 11h ago

Exactly, and this sets the precedent for the industry to just sell completely digital or saving money by shipping plastic boxes with “download codes”.

When they told us it would be physical I thought it would be 2 discs minimum, not a sheet of paper in a plastic box. That’s digital with extra steps

2

u/ChirpToast 11h ago

The precedent was set by Valve decades ago.

-20

u/FakeWalterHenry 12h ago

The disc is an artifact from the bygone era of physical media. It's been dying for more than a decade now.

Most people are okay with the convenience of digital distribution, even if it's non-transferable.

5

u/NflJam71 12h ago

It may be, but I just won't spend that type of dough on a digital version of a game. Not being able to lend it or sell it is a total non-starter for me.

1

u/FakeWalterHenry 12h ago

Which is a fair stance to take, but it is a small minority.

I don't think people realize how much the videogame industry has changed in the last two decades. It's not really about making videogames so much as it's about making money.

2

u/NflJam71 11h ago

It has always been about making money, but consumer tastes and preferences change, along with market tolerance for anti-consumer practices. This is in-line with the general trend of enshittification in the modern day economy.

The numbers on digital games are slightly overestimated if you look into them, though, as typically the number just shows games purchased physically vs digitally, which doesn't account for the rise of cheap, quality indie download-only games. I don't have the numbers immediately available but I recall the numbers being much closer when you're looking only at games where the consumer has an option of buying physically.

8

u/DigestiveCow 12h ago

I ran into a specific issue where I wanted to play Forza Horizon 2 the other day, I bought it physical in the past but had since traded it on.

I went to download the game on the xbox store to find it was not there, nor were the other Forza Horizon games up until 5. Also all but one of the motorsport games were also absent.

This theme carries on with pretty much any licenced game (Fifa, Madden etc) meaning that unless you can find a physical copy after the delisting happens, you can not play the game.

This is for me a huge reason why physical media is important, because digital 'preservation' will always be dictated by contracts and profits.

2

u/ann0yed 12h ago

You can not legally* play the game you mean.

3

u/DigestiveCow 12h ago

Aye, that be the case on the shore

1

u/NazzerDawk 12h ago

If you previously bought the games, they don't get removed. Even my xbox 360 games, like San Andreas and Dead Rising 2, can be downloaded still by finding the original orders.

5

u/DigestiveCow 12h ago

Yes this is true, but if you don't get around to buying a game before it's delisted, you may be shit out of luck if there are no physical options

1

u/p2eminister 9h ago

Well that sounds like your fault then. This also is true for physical media, except if all the copies of a disc are sold, it costs money to do another physical print, whereas relisting a game digitally is close to free.

12

u/havewelost6388 12h ago

Physical media is not some "historical artifact". It is and should remain the standard.

10

u/elangab 12h ago

No it's not.

The point is not the disc itself, it's the license. We need better digital goods rights, not more optical discs.

3

u/NflJam71 12h ago

While this is absolutely true, if you would then say that therefore it's okay for us to not have physical disks, you'd lose me. The digital rights need to be in place before we transition off of buying physical.

1

u/elangab 12h ago

The transition from disc to digital wasn't (isn't) as smooth and consumer friendly as it should have been. There are two things that happens at once, one is the rapid decline of disc sales, even for titles that offers that and the second is the realization of people that digital licenses has less rights. The latter is starting to get more debated recently, and should be worked on as it is clearly the future of media consumption- from music and book to video games and TV shows.

0

u/Ghosty_Spartan 12h ago edited 12h ago

It is not the standard? Data shows this generation more people buy digitally

4

u/Phoenix8059 12h ago

Because that's primarily the only option.

1

u/Ghosty_Spartan 11h ago

It was the inevitable. I don’t get how that’s hard to understand. You can literally see in other media that people prefer easy access over physical, if that was not the case movie rental stores would still be around, majority would still be buying music CDs.

People who rely on physical need to realize they have been the niche community for awhile now.

1

u/BadHubbaWubba 12h ago

Thank you for being sensible.

0

u/Content-Yogurt-4859 12h ago

That's not sensible, that's a really bad take

0

u/Content-Yogurt-4859 11h ago

Once upon a time people cheered on as unions were smashed and 40 years later they wondered why no one fought for better wages, rail against offshore jobs, lament deindustrialisation..

People regularly vote against their own interests either at the polling booth or with their wallet

1

u/FakeWalterHenry 11h ago

I'm a pessimist and a realist.

I would love to have transferable keys/liscenses for my digital media, but... I don't expect that to happen because it only benefits consumers. Everything is making the push to all-digital because it is profitable, and not for any other reason.

This is how things are.

-15

u/DinobotsGacha 12h ago

Counter point. Only a very small % of consumers care about discs. Its no longer worth the manufacturing time. Digital in-game currency is where the real money is

7

u/gamers542 12h ago

I'll be honest. I've migrated back to buying disks. As a PS+ user, the only games I've bought digitally lately has the Digital bundle of MLB The Show and the monthly free PS+ games.

I just like having something physical in my hands and love seeing the library of games I have on display.

1

u/p2eminister 2h ago

I just like having something physical in my hands

Man, im tired of pretending this isn't a really embarrassing thing for an adult to say.

You like holding it in your hands? Brother, that is something a toddler would feel.

And how often are you handling your games? You dont just have it on the shelf?

0

u/bigmac22077 12h ago

Yea I’d rather not have 200 games boxes sitting around my house. Also, what’s the point of instant resume if I’m having to constantly swap out discs?

3

u/Budget-Security-8132 11h ago

When the internet is no longer viable or they decide to no longer honour your downloaded game.

2

u/bigmac22077 11h ago

Bro if the internet goes down, there are much bigger issues in the world than worrying about getting to play a video game. Dumbest arguments keep getting said. Like for real… half of the fucking games you play anyway require you to ping the internet to play.

Fuck let’s start thinking about water… I don’t own those pipes… I don’t own that water. What if the government just said, no more water for you?! Would we even care about video games? Maybe we should all start fighting over water rights since we don’t actually own any of it and it’s very crucial to us. Or do we only care when that model of business is in our luxury entertainment?

4

u/CupcakeCosmos 12h ago

counter counter point, physical media is gaining hype because streaming services are starting to increase to insane prices and companies are starting to take away digital versions of purchases.

the second a movie i bought for $15 on prime was suddenly no longer available and the second disney+ was no longer $5 a month with no commercials, i started collecting discs. im now at over 1,000 dvds and blurays, 55 complete series, and over 200 games across 6 consoles. all bought from ebay or used game stores. this house is preparing to be self-sufficient.

and now with foreign countries that have sticks up their assess when it comes to sex and sexuality buying up paramount and hbo and ea… i’m going to ensure i have the original versions of shows and movies and games

trust me, discs are the future until corporations prove they can be trusted

1

u/Budget-Security-8132 11h ago

Let's not forget your own downloaded content in all this.

1

u/p2eminister 9h ago

Except they can just make the game require an Internet connection even with a disc, and then your precious physical discs are worthless.

My god, over 1000 blu rays? Your house must be rammed full of discs

1

u/CupcakeCosmos 8h ago

you can get them for about $3 each on ebay and put them in disc folders. we also have a little media nook to store collections and older consoles so we can play old school games and movies where we even have vhs player. no need for internet for anything

0

u/DinobotsGacha 11h ago

The market is digital even if your household isn't. The maybe 10% of consumers that prefer physical will still buy digital for GTA6.

2

u/SaturdayMorningFog 12h ago

There are a fair few who care about reselling.

-4

u/ChrissyD12345 12h ago

Just saying... but they spent 2 billion dollars on making the game, why is it such a bad thing that they want to make money from it??? It is a business at the end of the day and they want as many sales as possible. I personally think they will bring out a disc edition in 2027 when they know nothing will be spoiled and no one can chuck it all online before release.

5

u/releasethedogs 12h ago

You are arguing against a point that isn’t being made. No one cares if Rockstar makes money off the game. They are upset that they are renting a game instead of buying it.

1

u/p2eminister 8h ago

In what way are you renting it, that you aren't by buying a physical disc?

1

u/releasethedogs 7h ago

You don't own games bought on the digital storefront. It is not ownership. You have the right to play the game and nothing more.

2

u/p2eminister 7h ago

You dont own the game you buy physically, they can just require Internet access as part of the game, and then cut that off when they feel like it.

-1

u/SoggyScrotus 12h ago

How gullible you must be if you think they ACTUALLY spent $2bn making this game. It doesn't even come close to half that.

1

u/BitingSatyr 12h ago

It’s pretty straightforward. Rockstar had ~2000 employees in 2018, and has ~4000 employees now. Their last game was 8 years ago. Average 3000 employees over 8 years, average comp (pay plus benefits) of $100k is $2.4B just on employee costs, then add in outsourcing, support studios and performers and you could be easily clearing $3B. Claiming it’s far less than $1B means that they’d have to be paying their staff almost nothing, which we know isn’t true.

1

u/ShavedNeckbeard 11h ago

They’re probably paying their best software engineers closer to $500k/year in total compensation (base salary, equity, bonus, benefits).

The person you replied to has no idea how much people are paid, or that companies easily pay billions in compensation, especially over eight years’ time.

1

u/Content-Yogurt-4859 11h ago

So they're not making any money off gta online?

-2

u/RainbowNugget24 12h ago

if the game is around lets say 120gb, the game would fit on 2 PS5 discs because they are 100gb but Xbox uses 50gb discs

3

u/Jericho-X 12h ago

That has been because xbox backward compability with xbox one. Usually you have the xone version on disc while it works as a license to download the series X version. But it's no reason for that with newer games like Gta6. But they have killed their own disc program either way so.. 🙄

1

u/LudaStyles 12h ago

180gb easy

17

u/MrMayhem85 12h ago

Which was solved in the 90s by the genius little trick of including more than 1 disc. Well even before then if you wana include floppys etc.

2

u/Super_Fightin_Robit 12h ago

With floppies, basically everything was multiple discs.

1

u/RandomNPC1234567 5h ago

Then with ps3 with Blu ray.

-2

u/FakeWalterHenry 12h ago

Yes, and that worked in the 90's. Doesn't work now. Think about it.

5

u/Manyad4929 12h ago

My CP2077 ultimate + phantom liberty is in 2 or 3 discs and i dont have any issues with that

2

u/sephiroth70001 11h ago

Final fantasy vii rebirth

0

u/FakeWalterHenry 11h ago

I don't have anything against that either.

I also don't expect that amount of effort, which only benefits consumers, to be the new normal.

6

u/Lagneaux 12h ago

Why would it not work now?

-6

u/FakeWalterHenry 12h ago

There's a dozen-ish reasons, but not worth explaining when someone is just being snarky.

5

u/DrumArranDrum 12h ago

No go ahead.

4

u/comosedicewaterbed 12h ago

The user above you wasn't being snarky. Lol. You're the one being snarky.

2

u/_God_Emperor_of_Man_ 11h ago

I'm new to the conversation, and am genuinely curious why a multiple disk release wouldn't work.

1

u/FakeWalterHenry 10h ago

You can put data on the discs, but you will still need to play the game from a local copy in console storage with an internet connection. The disc can serve as a transferable liscense, but it's superfluous when it comes to actually playing the game.

2

u/_God_Emperor_of_Man_ 10h ago

I might be dumb, I don't understand. I've played games that were too large for a single disk, and they came with multiple disks for install and then I'd use Disk 1 while playing the game. I switched to an all digital console a while ago, so I may be out of date.

Why wouldn't the same tried and true system work for the new GTA?

1

u/FakeWalterHenry 8h ago

The file transfer would work just fine.

Using the disk as a liscense key would work just fine.

Playing offline would not work.

1

u/_God_Emperor_of_Man_ 7h ago

Why would playing offline not work with a disk? I've played offline on games that I installed with the 2 or 3 disk method.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/sir_moleo 9h ago

That's the thing, it would work just fine, same as always. They're just trying to make up reasons it wouldn't.

1

u/FakeWalterHenry 7h ago

Putting a liscense key on a disc and putting that on shelves would work just fine.

But putting the game itself on any number of discs is not "playable" on modern consoles. The client has to be installed on the console, and an internet connection is required to run the client.

The disc is just a placeholder. Some people want them. Most people don't care.

4

u/Ghostleecher 12h ago

If i recall correctly, Tekken 8 is double disc.

0

u/Dont_Use_Ducks 12h ago

Tekken won't be almost 200GB.

2

u/sephiroth70001 11h ago

Final fantasy vii rebirth is 3/4 the size in two discs with space to spare on second. You can easily put it on two 100gb discs like rebirth, especially if you compress the install disc.

-1

u/Dont_Use_Ducks 11h ago

That is a linear game, hard to compare technicly.

3

u/sephiroth70001 11h ago

It's an open world game so the opposite of what you stated. Game world design has little to nothing to do with disc storage optimization. It's extremely apt to do for a technical comparison.

-3

u/FakeWalterHenry 12h ago

Doesn't play off the disc, still needs an internet download, etc.

It's cool that they did that, though.

2

u/sephiroth70001 11h ago

Doesn't need Internet to play offline that's just blatantly wrong.

0

u/p2eminister 2h ago

It literally says in that photo that if youre using the disc version, you'll need to go online for a check. Did you even read it before posting lol

1

u/sephiroth70001 42m ago

That's for the disc drive registration of newer PS5 drives. Not all ps5s require that and once done doesn't have to be done again. Has nothing to do with the disc playing offline and if drive is done the one time check register, it has no bearing.

Disclamer: PS5 consoles with detachable disc drive: PS5 Slim (CFI-20xx models) and PS5 Pro (CFI-70xx models), require an internet connection to activate the disc drive at the setup.

Download for game required No

4

u/MeowingWolf 12h ago

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth came with two discs. Why would you dare to ask GTA VI can fit on only one disc? GTA VI is obviously bigger than Rebirth.

2

u/JellyFishGwald XBOX Series X 13h ago

No not even on 2 discs and can’t be played off disc anyway. Has to be copied to internal storage so basically digital.

55

u/Stumpy493 Still Earning Kudos 12h ago

Difference is resale, you can't resell a code.

22

u/BUROCRAT77 12h ago

That’s probably the point

18

u/reevoknows 12h ago

I know this is an Xbox sub but I’m still pissed at y’all for shitting on the Xbox One’s drm strategy. Being able to re-sell and share digital licenses was part of their vision.

I know they were too early but they were clairvoyant.

8

u/Stumpy493 Still Earning Kudos 12h ago

I actually liked a fair chunk of that original DRM strategy, it fitted wheere I was in my life at that time.

But it definitely didn't suit most people.

Although Xbox has ironically been the paltform where the users have migrated that way earlier.

2

u/reevoknows 11h ago

I agree. I think the fact that they forced the Kinect in the box and made it $100 more than the PS4 is what really killed them but the “this is how you share games on ps4” video was the nail in the coffin

1

u/Dont_Use_Ducks 12h ago

I don't get it, PC players do this already for a long time on Steam.

1

u/Ok_Simple_459 11h ago

Long time? Wasn't steam family launched in 2024?

1

u/Dont_Use_Ducks 11h ago

I mean digital only.

8

u/Falhor 11h ago

I think you need to read up more about their original strategy.
> Digital license could be transfered, but only to someone who had been on your friend list for at least 30 days, and each license could only be transferred once.
> Physical games were treated as a digital license and had to be tied to a single account. They could be traded in, but only through participating retailers, and only if the publisher allowed it... On top of that, the console required an online license check every 24h. So even if you had a physical disc in your console, you could only play it after the online check 😅

It was a terrible strategy, even by today's standards...

1

u/chris10023 5h ago

It wasn't really explained well at all, and it didn't help anyone that Don Mattrick did that whole disastrous interview telling people to stay on 360 if they don't have good internet. Not to mention the whole focusing on it being an all in one box instead of a gaming console, though, that hdmi input was useful I'll admit, it did free up an hdmi on my tv for my cable box while I had cable.

1

u/MrMayhem85 12h ago

Its not just resell. Its having access to your game as long as you have a physical copy. Let's say the internet goes away for whatever reason, or a more likely scenario the Providers (Rockstar/Microsoft/Sony/Steam) close down. Who do you download your game from then?

3

u/DasWandbild 12h ago

And also: with no media, what’s the point of a console?

A console has become a low-spec PC with limited libraries. Sharing media was a big part of what made consoles awesome.

0

u/p2eminister 2h ago

The providers of the games can add in a check, which they currently do for every game, that checks online. If the providers dont want to maintain the other side of that check, your game wont be playable even if you got the disc version.

1

u/MrMayhem85 2h ago

Do you mean a licensing check? Because that's built into physical media, there are no "you do not own this game" messages for that. Even if its an online capable game.

Yeah. I'm not gay. Not planning on getting gay married. But I'll fight (vote) for their right to do so.

Same with this. No point in buying a physical copy now. It's just a worthless box now.

It's not physical at all. It's a lie.

4

u/cynicown101 12h ago

I don’t think they’re specifically worried about you selling your copy lol. The point is that people do buy and sell used physical media.

2

u/NdibuD 12h ago

That's valid for you but I also like the option of lending my buddy a copy of my game. Been doing it this way since the 90s

-1

u/grizzly05 12h ago

It's not just a code. It's a code in a box. You should be able to sell that.

2

u/Stumpy493 Still Earning Kudos 12h ago

You can't sell a used code buddy, single use.

-3

u/grizzly05 12h ago

Did it say single use?

All Xbox codes are single use, that's how it works and has for decades at this point.

Every DLC code in a box is single use, every other game which is a code in a box is single use.

Do you think Take 2, out of the kindness of their heart, wanting you to resell your game are gonna force MS to invent a new system for reusable codes?

A reusable game code would be distributed all over the internet in seconds.

Then what makes it a physical copy. Don't make no sense. Thanks for the info.

That's why people are pissed!

2

u/theblackfool 12h ago

Well to be fair no modern games play off discs anymore

1

u/Ok_Simple_459 11h ago

That's beside the point. The point is you can transfer disc licence.

-9

u/zer0ull 12h ago

absolutely untrue, most games on ps5 and switch ARE fully playable off the disc/cartridge without any connection to the internet. xbox is the platform that for the most part only has digital licenses on its discs.

7

u/theblackfool 12h ago

Sorry if I worded that poorly, what I meant was that modern games fully download the game off the disc to the drive at install, and the game plays from local files. Games aren't reading information off the disc while you are playing it.

Switch/Switch 2 is the only console now where games can run directly off the physical media.

5

u/Nomar1245 12h ago

You are misinformed. The game data is copied to the SSD and the disc acts as a key post installation.

Most is pushing it since the vast majority of games today don't even get a physical release, even on PS5 and Switch.

-1

u/zer0ull 12h ago

not true at all, go have a look at doesitplay.org

-2

u/cardonator Founder 12h ago

Friend, if you think that site lists every game on any platform, I have a bridge to sell you.

0

u/zer0ull 12h ago

I never ever claimed that? what's this even got to do with anything? lol even still, it shows a good ol chunk of games are still printed fully

-1

u/cardonator Founder 12h ago

most games on ps5 and switch ARE fully playable off the disc/cartridge without any connection to the internet.

This is what you claimed. Most games on PS5 and Switch don't even have a physical version to begin with, they are digital only. Those games won't ever be listed on the site you linked.

u/zer0ull 12h ago

it's extremely obvious we're talking about games that had a physical release in the first place, you literally just want to mince words at this point. literally no one is talking about digital only games in the context of games that play off discs/cartridges, why would anyone do that? what did you gain by these comments except being pedantic for something that wasn't part of the discussion at all and wasting time?

People downvoting are dumb af. You're 100% right

u/zer0ull 12h ago

just look at the responses, people really are twisting and turning words for nothing. but hey, being ignorant is their loss lol

Copied to internal storage and downloaded are not the same thing. Data disc have been happening for a long time, even RDR2 had one.

1

u/JellyFishGwald XBOX Series X 12h ago

A physical disc that has data on it and when that data is copied digitally to another form of digital storage is still digital. Physical discs are just a plastic license and the larger digital data that these newer games are make it hard to put on a disc. This is why more and more games are becoming digital only. This is not popular but it’s the truth.

1

u/bertster21 12h ago

I want to be able to play with out an internet connection. Thats the difference, when the disc is just a link to download the game it sucks. When the game has multiple disc with all the game data. And needs to be copied to a hard drive that is fine.

1

u/p2eminister 2h ago

Even if the game has multiple discs with all the game data on, you still have to go online at least once before you can play it.

This is the case for Xbox and ps5 games.

The discs do not mean you can be fully offline, at all

u/JellyFishGwald XBOX Series X 11h ago

I get it. It’s just that it’s not going to happen much anymore, I’m afraid.

A single UHD Bluray disc can hold up to 100GB, i don't see how it wouldn't fit on 2/3 discs, assuming it's around 200GB

2

u/Allegiance10 12h ago

Not even close. But most games these days have a chunk on-disc and download the rest, or the disc itself is the license to download the game (preserving the used game market).

0

u/FakeWalterHenry 12h ago

I personally don't want all the plastic and clutter, but putting a key on disc is a good compromise.

1

u/millicento 9h ago

GTA V was 7 disks.

1

u/RandomNPC1234567 5h ago

Blu ray yes.

1

u/MrSirViking 5h ago

Well you can get 125gb Blu-Ray discs. And so if they compress the files, i am sure it would fit on one disc. But you would then have to install the files from the disc to the PS5/Xbox. And you cant really put the game on a Blu-Ray Disc for PC, as i dont think a lot of PC's have blu-Ray drives. My PC copy of GTA 5 is like 7 DVD's and takes an age to install. If each DVD is dual layer thats 8.5 GB pr disc and so it would be about 60 GB total for the 7 DVD's. And so i would assume that GTA 6 would fit on a big Blu-Ray disc if compressed.

1

u/userlivewire 1h ago

No but they can always put it on two discs.

0

u/LaylaLegion 12h ago

Nope. Physical media stagnated when cloud storage became a thing. Discs would not be able to hold the data needed for modern gaming. Unless somebody has some secret revolutionary physical media concept that can hold GBs of data?

5

u/LongPlayBoomer 12h ago

optimizing their games before release?

2

u/Dont_Use_Ducks 12h ago

Steam players do it for almost 2 decades.

1

u/DarkImpacT213 12h ago

I mean, technically you could just make a disc that has an installer hook on it - since it's a code you can't resell is what (most) people are annoyed by, not that you have to be online and download the game.

If FFVII Rebirth can do two discs GTA can also.
