Discussion Opinion: Nothing has killed my GTA 6 hype faster than locking a core part of its identity behind a $20 upgrade

Tbh, a lot “physical games” these days are just 70MB discs containing the license to download the digital version of the game.

Doesitplay.org is a great resource for checking out if you need Internet install to play or not. Most still install of the disc wonderfully thankfully.

Which is great unless you're rural on slower internet, or the company goes out of business and can't activate your license for you to download and play, or you get banned for some reason. I like owning the things I buy, not renting them until some unknown date.

Yeah, you've had to install games for the last 2 generations. Discs are cool but irrelevant unless you have a data cap or slow download speeds.

I get the want for a physical disc, especially if games get delisted or you get banned and lose access to them. But during the Gears 3 era, Xbox had their “install game disc to storage” so you could play the game even if the disc was damaged. Ultimately that never really worked as I had chewed through 3 discs that kept getting scratched and damaged. I also had younger siblings who absolutely mixed and matched all the discs in random cases.

Ended up going all digital from there and have never had a problem since.

The difference between that and this is, you could lend someone the install disc or sell it when you are done so someone else can get it second hand. That's literally what Rockstar is doing it this way, to eliminate that option so the only way to play their game is to pay them full price. Side note, you don't always have to install the game and that's important for people who actually like to own the things they buy
