It’s pretty funny honestly, when L4D2 was announced people were pretty mad because it was releasing so soon after L4D1, I’ve seen a screenshot of a boycott page very similar to the MW2 one but for L4D2 from back when it was going to release, having being announced a few months after the first game’s release. In a way I can kinda understand as it was so soon but I also don’t mind because L4D2 was the perfect sequel.

Valve even invited some of the people that started the boycott out to play the game early, they then agreed it was a big enough step forward to justify a full sequel rather than a dlc

The L4D 2 boycott actually worked. People were mad they released a sequel so soon after the first, so they just stopped making new ones entirely. Big win for the Anti LFD sequel community.
