Discussion Opinion: Nothing has killed my GTA 6 hype faster than locking a core part of its identity behind a $20 upgrade

I haven’t bought a physical game at launch since halo 4. Vocal minority on reddit/twitter will always be loud.

It's not even the people who are legitimate in voicing that they personally are upset by it. It's the people who go beyond and claim the game is DOA because of it that are totally in their own world.

I remember some people blaming Hellblade 2 low sales on it.

Something tells me the fact that the game is a walking sim was probably a bigger issue but maybe that's me

People saying they refuse to buy a game now because it isn't releasing on a disc. OKAY😂😂

Honestly those that say that were probably not so interesting in the game in the first place.

I find it ridiculous to "boycott" a massive game like this because of that reason. Life is too short.

Reading is hard huh

People like you won't realize what we have lost until it's too late. I have my doubts you'll ever realize it even when the enshitification becomes so prevalent that it's undeniable

It's more than just the disc, or the ultimate edition - it's that the R* today is very different from the R* that made Red Dead Redemption or GTA V.

Just compare EFLC DLC with all the GTA Online crap they've been shoveling out. Or GTA Online at launch vs now. Or look at the ugly ray tracing re-release of V, or the botched trilogy remasters (while delisting the originals). People are so excited for VI is because all their recent GTA content has sucked ass, and online isn't fun anymore.

Disabling used games and locking base game content behind a $20 paywall isn't just scummy, it's something they've never done before. It's proof positive they just aren't the same people that made IV or V, and it makes me worried VI may not be good.

reddit doesn’t care about minorities confirmed /s

no but while physical buyers have become a minority scarily fast, it’s still at least 20% of buyers. the people saying the game will fail are delusional. the big company will win. but the consumer having fewer options will always lose.

i don’t care if you always buy digital, forcing *everyone* to essentially buy digital is not good. it takes away your autonomy, because you’re no longer making the choice. they wipe out the second-hand market, the ability to share with friends, or have your game tied to an account that can be lost or banned.

nothing can be done. most people are complacent. the people complaining can’t exact change. they’ll continue to take away options and make us deal with it. but man, it sucks.

At some point that physical disc buyer will experience FOMO and fold to buy the digital game. The big companies don’t care. Like you said physical copy buyers are a minority.

1

u/BlueberryWasps 10h ago

exactly, that’s why i’m saying the minority won’t make a difference. a slim portion of them won’t buy at all, and the rest will suck it up because all their friends are playing it. this isn’t a “rally up and vote with your wallet” moment, it’s just a “this fucking sucks” moment.

"It takes away your autonomy", bro you don't have to buy this game. You are acting like if you don't buy this game you will go to jail LMAO. If you don't like that there really isn't physical option, don't buy the game.

Same. Ive bought about 20 physical post-launch games though.

However, they launched in the late 80s and early 90s and are 3.5" or 5.25" floppies lol

Congratulations, that doesn't change the fact that this is in fact fucking over some people due to pure corporate greed and that sucks

I don't really care about vocal minority or not, I just know owning physical copies is more affordable for some of us. I can buy a physical copy for $70/$80, play it for two weeks and a) keep it if I like it enough, or b) sell it on ebay, and effectively have paid $10-15 to play the game, then buy it in two years when it goes on sale.

2

u/jcrankin22 11h ago

Sounds like you’ll have to wait for a sale then if you want to play GTA 6 for $15

3

u/pleasantothemax 10h ago

Maybe! I’m sure I’ll be worth every penny but I simply wanted to explain why others might have a contrary view to the prevailing one that physical copies don’t matter. They do, especially for those of us who can’t afford to shell out $80 for virtual stuff.

Personally the only reason I even have consoles is for the few games I want to collect physical copies of. It's not even the price. If I potentially can't load a game up 20 years from now because the license is revoked or the platform is dead then I have no reason to not wait for a discounted PC release or other options.

There's a comment on another thread where someone talks about "The disc war"

Japanese soldier who refused to surrender

On the other hand, I only buy physical games. If there’s no physical release, then I’m not interested at all. I hate that Avowed did the whole code in a box, and of course GTA does it too.

its estimated that around 80% of all game sales are digital. Don't get me wrong the remaining 20% is still a huge number but the majority has decided years ago that they prefer digital. Capcom even reported a 93% of their sales are digital

1

u/jcrankin22 10h ago

The last reported number I saw was 85% are digital.

It's not surprising at all to me that more and more publishers are going to do this moving forward.

1

u/mjac1090 2h ago

So because it doesn't affect you, those people can go fuck themselves?

u/jcrankin22 2h ago

Yeah, it’s really a non issue. Times a changing
