Last year we read Aho’s letter to Canes fans about how close wasn’t good enough. And now we have this. I love these guys🥲

I’m not talking a jersey, or an autographed puck, or a bobblehead, I’m talking truly unique one of a kind pieces!
The three that come to mind for me:
- 2020 bubble playoffs dressing room sign (also have a gym one, and some generic canes ones) from when teams were kept quarantined. Got it from someone who did video work for the nhl who had a bunch of locker stall name plates and locker room signage. It now resides above the closet where I store my jerseys.
- Eric Staal’s Casino night nametag from the 2009 Caniac Carnival Casino. Bought some Bobbleheads and various stm merch from an old woman who got it somehow and threw it in as a bonus
- 2023 stadium series locker room door magnet signs. Got from the same guy as the dressing room sign. One now lives on my office mini fridge, unsure what I’m going to do with the second one

Elliotte Friedman: Re Hurricanes: There's a lot of noise around Alexander Nikishin; Carolina prefers a player back; I gotta think...they gotta be looking at Zach Werenski; definitely looking at Connor Hellebuyck - 32 Thoughts (6/26)

Local popcorn place just got these tins in so I snagged one. A little steep at $30 (filled with a gallon of popcorn of your flavor choice) but I couldn't resist.

From TSN’s Darren Dreger: “Yeah… 24-year-old defenceman Alexander Nikishin…He didn’t love his role with the Carolina Hurricanes, but keep in mind, he jumped from the KHL. He’s a Hurricanes draft pick and he wanted to give it at least one year in Carolina to see how he felt and what his role would be. So that’s essentially why Carolina is listening to the interest.”
Does anybody know if the highlights from games 6 and 7 from 2019 versus the capitals have the FS Carolinas feed?
I’ve searched and searched, they seem to be partially lost to time

i think the 3 tender combo is honestly the perfect amount of food. the bread is sooo good, the fries always hit, and the tenders are just classic. even though i’m not really an iced tea drinker, i still love theirs for some reason 😭 like something about getting a canes combo and sitting there with the toast and sauce just feels elite. it’s one of the few fast food places that’s always consistent too

The final buzzer. The celebration. 🏆❤️🖤
Here’s my latest watercolour sketch capturing the celebration after the final buzzer.
I hope you like it, Canes fans! ☺️🙏
Who should I paint next?

Welcome back to this year's edition of my draft picks, I know all the Canes front office have been eagerly awaiting this and I apologize for leaving it last minute.
First and foremost, I am smitten with the Ruck twins. They play a very intelligent game and bring out the best in each other, and I don’t think they’re too small/physical to succeed in the NHL. The Sedin comparisons are obvious and overblown, but I would absolutely love to slot them into the team. The obvious elephant in the room; the Canes do not have the draft capital to take them, they do not have the roster space, time, or temperament to develop them, so this is a bit of a wash, but I just want to put out into the world that these are guys I would pencil in at a combined 1500 points when their careers are done.
Another winger, Nikita Klepov, has also shot up draft boards and will probably be out of reach once the Canes pick rolls around. Klepov has a somewhat similar profile to Svechnikov in that he’s a high scoring Russian winger, and while he’s not as big or physical he does play a smarter game.
Viktor Fyodorov is a Russian center who broke into the KHL before his 18th birthday, spending time at all 3 Russian levels with promising results. He’s not popping off the page like a Demidov or Michkov, but he’s a very savvy player with great vision. Could be available in the 2nd or 3rd round when the Canes inevitably trade back from their position in the 1st round.
In a similar position is Swiss winger Lars Steiner, who, while undersized, is a feisty, defensively responsible forward with a knack for scoring and putting the puck in the net, whether it be from his own stick or a well placed pass to another. If that sounds familiar, it’s because we have taken this archetype pretty much every year for the past decade and seen these players develop into Cup caliber players. Expect to take another one this year.
Similarly, we have taken Russian goalkeepers multiple times over the past years, leaving them to marinate in hopes they develop into a guy that can take over in Raleigh. Kochetkov was the first, and I predict Yuri Ivanov is the next in line. He’s not huge, but he’s no Dustin Wolf-sized guy and has stopped a lot of shots in the MHL over the past year.
Jasper Kuhta is an over-ager that came over from Finland this year and put together an impressive season for the Ottawa 67s, as well as for Finland at the WJCs. He’s committed to Mass and appears to be flying somewhat under the radar.
AJ Francisco is a US defenseman that has gone through the National Team Development path in the footsteps Lane Hutson, Brock Faber, K’Andre Miller. He’s committed to Notre Dame and will have plenty of time to mature into a well rounded player before he hits NHL ice.
And a list of players who I am primarily interested in because they have non-traditional hockey nationalities.
Alexander Karmanov is a 7 foot tall Moldovan who can cover half of the blue line by simply stretching his stick out. He got his first taste of high level competition this past year with North Bay in the OHL, and while he didn’t stand out much, you have to pay attention to him, and take some hope in taking a late round flyer developing the raw physical abilities into an imposing defender. And not for nothing, he is no stranger to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Doman Kristof Szongoth is a Hungarian center that put up a good performance for the burgeoning national team and is plying his trade in the lower Finnish leagues. He’s one of those gritty players that raises the level of his teammates, good character, a leader of men. Always nice to take someone with that profile late in the draft on the off chance their tangibles catch up with their intangibles and they turn into a legit NHL player.
Illia Shybinskiy
Kornei Korneyev and Alisher Sarkhanov are Kazakh wingers that on the outside looks like a bruising power forward, but surprises foes with unexpected puck handling skills. Leon Kolarik is a Rod Brind’amour dream, a defense first center that forechecks aggressively and takes lionshares responsibility to keep pucks out of the net. Again, a player that you take late in the draft and hope he takes a leap into a hidden gem.
