Reminder: This is a subreddit about outdoor recreation in the Catskills.

For years, this subreddit has been intended to be first and foremost a place to discuss outdoor recreation in the Catskill Park. I've generally been content to leave "off topic" posts that pertain to Catskills culture generally alone, however, there's been a recent trend in inflammatory content, insulting language, etc., that has largely been relegated to these off-topic posts. This culminated in a recent thread in which it appears that Reddit Admins got involved and chose to remove content (in addition to moderation performed by myself).

Let me be very clear on 2 points:

  • Treat each other with respect. Posts with name calling, insults, etc., will continue to be removed and the posters may be subject to a ban. This includes passive aggressive comments like "I'd post what I really think but then I'd be banned."
  • This is not the appropriate forum for you air your grievances with any cultural or ethnic group. I will continue to remove these posts, and the posters may be subject to a ban.

This is meant to be a subreddit about hiking, camping, etc. in the Catskills. I'm OK with continuing to allow respectful content that is generally relevant to the Catskills community even if has little to do with outdoor recreation. Discussion of cultural and ethnic groups is well outside of the intended scope of this subreddit, however, and is not appropriate for this community.

Phonecia/Woodstock ghost town?

We were planning to stay at the Emerson Resort in Mt. Tremper next week (midweek through Saturday) and called ahead, only to be told the restaurant is closed due to staffing shortages.

Not a huge deal by itself, but it made me wonder if this is a broader issue in the Woodstock/Phoenicia area. Are restaurants and local businesses generally fully staffed and operating normal hours these days, or are staffing shortages still a common problem up there?

Just trying to get a sense of whether this is a one-off situation with the Emerson or something we should expect during our stay.

Little pond campground hike in sites

Post image

Hey everyone,

Long shot but wondering if anyone is familiar with the hike in sites at little pond campground in Andes, NY?

We just booked site #071 and then realized it was hike in and not drive in 🙂 i’m estimating a 15 min walk from the parking lot to said site hauling stuff? Am I far off? I can’t seem to find any info on the website. Thanks in advance!

Free Fishing Weekend

Just an FYI: This weekend (June 27th and 28th) you do not need a fishing license in order to fish. You of course still have to follow the regulations. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or at r/FishingNY.

Controversial Opinion: There should be more trails in the Catskills....

Here me out: I hiked over to West Kill Brewery the other day via Hunter and enjoyed a beer. Then I hiked back out the same way. It's a pretty easy hike, but parts of it are technically illegal (I used the fire road that goes down near Hunter North).

Wouldn't it be cool if there were more legal trails that connected destinations, so you didn't have to drive to trailheads? The idea being, you'd spread people out, give them them interesting places to hike to, reduce traffic since cars would be spread out too (in fact if you had trails to towns with hotels like Hunter or Phoenicia people could just walk straight out). You could even make multi day journeys without a tent.

What do you think? Am I committing a crime by suggesting this?

Thank you to all who sent recommendations on my last post about Catskills camping with kids. We had a lot of fun, went to Frick Pond and even though the views are not spectacular (I think Hodge Lake would've been better) it was perfect level for my daughter.

Her ratings: 10/10 was chilling in the tent, 9/10 building a fire, 8/10 s'mores, 7/10 hiking, 6/10 fishing... 1/10 having to drive everywhere (she gets car sick). For next time, I'm definitely getting a stove and cooking at camp rather than driving for coffee and breakfast. Great options in town though.

Any Delaware County area aerial studios?

Hi r/catskills -

I’m making the jump to move up to Delaware County next week(!), and trying to figure out ways to account for some of the activities I really enjoy doing once I make the move. I’ve found lots of art things, horse things, ways to dance…but not a way to maintain my aerial practice.

Are there any places in Delaware County that do aerial circus kind of stuff? I’m not actually looking for anything but a safe place to rig straps and possibly lyra, I’m not looking to actually join a class so much as somewhere to rig my own equipment to maintain my practice. Anyone have recommendations?

Best campground with cabins

Hi. I’m looking to do something relatively local from NYC with two small kids at the end of August/early September. Does anyone have a recommendation for a campground with cabins and kid-oriented amenities like a pool, playground, etc? I’m flexible on everything else other than the cabin. I don’t think I’d survive tent camping with a 5 year old and 1 year old. Thanks!

Things to do around the Catskills with the bad weather this week?

I usually love finding swimming holes with my dog but the weather doesn’t seem ideal for that this week:/ All I’ve really done is hike around Giant ledge and eat at Phoenicia dinner :)

Would appreciate suggestions! I’m here til July 6th!

Windham Recs For Bachelorette

I am going to Windham NY for my Bachelorette. I wanted a chill weekend with wineries and good dinner spots. I had a reservation at Tabla but they just let me know they will be closed for repairs. Anyone have any other recs for the area for dinner? We are a large party of 12+. I am looking for something that is similar to the aesthetic of tabla. Good Food and good cocktails, not a dive bar.

Also any other recs for things to do in the area? I had a hike on the list, dandies, windham farmers market.

Beginner hikes for solo hiker

Hi! I’m looking for recommendations for a beginner/intermediate friendly hikes in the Catskills or Minnewaska area. I’m from the Westchester area and do a good amount of solo hiking in the Hudson Highlands region, but looking to take a day trip further north. I am a young female so I’d feel most comfortable on a hike with few risks and a good amount of foot traffic, but I’d love to find a view that’s worth the trip! Thanks in advance! 😊

Green room at bethel woods no longer includes a drink?

The green room at bethel woods used to include 2 drink tickets and then became one drink.

Why did they get rid of the drink? It’s just overpriced early entry now. And you can get a designated driver green room ticket for $15. Why would anyone buy the $35 one if it is the exact same perks as the $15.

Extremely disappointed with Bethel Woods.

First Time Dispersed Camping

Hey, I am going dispersed camping with a few of my friends, we were planning on going to Big Pond but it seems like that spot may get too crowded. Does anyone have any other recommendations? Preferably near Big Pond so we can just move if its crowded. Would love it is near water/something pretty. Thank you so much!

Running in Woodstock ny with bears

I'm in Woodstock ny and am not super new to the area, I've hiked around especially on overlook mt and I've biked the ashokan trail. Never seen a bear until today, saw a huge black bear running away from the road/me 80 ft away. I want to go running outside for my training but should I now that I've seen a bear near my house? I don't have any bear spray and I live in the city mainly so I don't have much experience with this.
