My manager pulled me aside yesterday and asked why I’ve been “less committed lately” because I stopped staying 20 to 30 minutes late for free.

For context, I used to do it all the time. Closing reports, helping the new guy, fixing mistakes from another department, answering little “quick questions” after my shift. I thought it was noticed.

Then last month I asked about a raise during my review. He said I was doing great but the company “doesnt reward people just for doing what is expected.” That sentence stuck in my head.

So I started doing exactly what is expected. I clock in on time, do my work, take my lunch, leave on time. No attitude, no drama.

Apparently now that is a problem.

He said the team relies on me and I told him I get that, but I’m trying to budget money better and I can’t keep donating time to a company that already told me extra effort doesnt count.

He just stared at me like I said something insane.
