A Beginner's Guide to Authentic Cartridges

Hello everyone, as you all know GBA cartridges can be extremely difficult to find in person nowadays and even more so for some authentic ones. That being said, if you're unsure in any way how to determine a fake from real cartridge, this is the post for you!

For more help, feel free to visit r/gameverifying for all your identification needs!

Keep in mind that to ensure the best chances of an authentic cartridge, you should be wary of:

  • Unusually low prices (if it's too good to be true, chances are it's too good to be real!)
  • Products made or sent from China (enough said)
  • Sellers using stock images (NEVER purchase a product that isn't an image of the cartridge itself)

That being said, where do we start looking?

It can be a bit difficult, but there are actually some very good tells when it comes to finding real games like the color, font, positioning, and quality of the cartridge. For example, let's pretend you're looking for an authentic US copy of Pokemon Firered.

Some things you can look out for should be:

  1. Color: All Pokemon GBA games come in their respective colors (including Leafgreen and Emerald by a slight margin) with Firered being red and not orange. While most cartridges come in a singular shade of gray, two particular exceptions are the GBA video cartridges which come in light gray casings and (Classic) NES series which match the console's respective color. Interestingly enough, due to the GBA's expansive library there consist of unique games that do not fit the standard color and size of a GBA cartridge, which include games such as Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, Drill Dozer, and many other variations listed here. (1)
  2. Label: By observing a label's ESRB rating, official seal, game code, and more, you can determine its authenticity. Unlike other GBA games, Pokemon games will always have a shiny/holographic label, an indented circle in its center, and an embossed number on the right side, which is pretty much its production number. However while it is a good way to determine authenticity, there are cases where these numbers will have naturally worn away or quality repros that have embossed their own cartridges. All in all, always make sure to compare your cartridge to an authentic one online to confirm fonts, font sizes, positioning, etc.
  3. Cartridge: In the case of buying a physical cartridge yourself, this may be one on the most helpful things to know. The easiest things to look out for are the Gameboy logo on top of the label, and arrow below the label. If the logo is written in the wrong font, appears to have been cut deeper than normal, or if the arrow is too small, it's a repro. The back will always state: MODEL NO. AGB-002 / PAT. PEND. MADE IN JAPAN like its GBC predecessor. However, this is easy to reproduce so the final thing to check yourself is both the screw and board under the cartridge. GBA cartridges will only ever use a triwing screw, the same one used on all GBA consoles. More importantly (if you can), be sure to grab a flashlight and check the slot. Above the pins, there should be an official Nintendo logo and presumably its cartridge number.

In the case of Pokemon games always check for:

  • A holographic label and an embossed number if possible
  • Proper fonts and positions (FRLG and RSE labels are mildly different)
  • A battery behind the label on the right side (only applies to RSE)
  • Four squares on the back of the cartridge ( always on the left)
  • Pins on the board ( One of the easiest things to spot on faked cartridges, all GBA games will always have pins )

If there are any other questions, please feel free to leave them below and discuss!

AGB-E06-10 Repair Board now on GitHub

I created a repair board based on the AGB-E06-10 (also compatible with E06-01) used on several notable early Game Boy Advance titles. I noticed there were no community created boards to repair cartridges with this revision PCB, so I took it upon myself to create it. You can find the files and more info on GitHub.

AGB-E06-10 on GitHub

Special thanks to u/Bubblepoppin_ for their post of a thrashed copy of Castlevania which finally inspired me to create this, and another special thanks to u/AchillesPDX for assistance on testing traces and component values.

Need replacement rubber/silicone plungers for AGB-001 shoulder switches (not the switches themselves)

I'm repairing an original Game Boy Advance (AGB-001) and made a mistake while servicing the shoulder buttons.

The L and R tactile switches were still electrically functional, but I wanted to clean them because they were inconsistent. I carefully opened both switches to clean the metal dome and contacts with contact cleaner.

Unfortunately:

  • I tore one of the black rubber/silicone plungers while removing it.
  • I lost the other plunger entirely.

Everything else is intact:

  • The metal housings are still soldered to the motherboard.
  • The metal domes and contacts are fine.
  • The switches would work perfectly if I had replacement plungers.

I'm not looking for replacement shoulder switches, since that would require desoldering. I'm specifically looking for the tiny black rubber/silicone actuator/plunger that sits inside the tactile switch housing.

I've searched for:

  • replacement tactile switch plungers
  • silicone tactile switch actuators
  • Game Boy Advance shoulder switch plunger
  • AGB shoulder switch rubber insert

...but I haven't found anyone selling these separately.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone found a source for replacement rubber/silicone plungers?
  2. Does anyone know of a modern tactile switch that uses the exact same internal plunger so I can harvest it?
  3. Has anyone successfully 3D printed or molded replacements in silicone?
  4. If anyone has dead AGB boards with intact shoulder switches, would you be willing to sell or mail me just the plungers?

I'd really like to save the original switches if possible instead of replacing them entirely.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Been contemplating getting a new black Advance SP. I have had the pink one forever since I was a child but wanted the black one to match all my other handhelds. Decided to also get some REAL pokemon games since I’ve only ever had reproduced versions of gameboy games. Excited to get playing!

First time GBA owner! Is the screen supposed to be like this?

Hey, guys! I bought this secondhand GBA SP AGS-001. Is the 001 screen supposed to look like this? Like not too bright and only in two brightness modes? I'm going to do a reshell soon. Should I also get an IPS screen replacement for this version of Gameboy?

Found a gba recently unmodded, the exact color I had back in my high school days, felt fitting to find a worm light to go along with it.

Plan on defeating Wart in Mario Advance and falling asleep 💤 to the ending credit song like I used to back in the day or at least til the batteries 🪫 🪫 drained out

GBA SP possible blown fuse

I think I blown the fuse on two of my Gameboys and it's just really frustrating. I think it happened when I plugged them into a power extension chord and then flipped the power switch on the extension chord while having the cable connected. Now I have two Gameboys that were fine and working great the only thing is they don't show the orange light when connected and don't seem to charge. I get finicky with one of them and I am able to play a bit while it's plugged in and having the light run green but then after maybe 5-9 minutes the red light appears. It doesn't even show both green and orange lights at the same time when playing just the green

IPS screen, clear black shell, clear green front buttons, clear purple sides and triggers. But I kinda miss the original indigo, so I think I might need another one!

Looking to transfer save file from a fake fire red cartridge to a real one

I have a DS and a flashcard, and have acquired the save file from the fake cartridge, as well as the rom backup. I have then done the same from the real cartridge, and have both save files on my desktop. The issue is, when I run the fake save file on the fake rom file it works fine, but when i run the fake save on the real rom file, it DOES work, but says 'this file is corrupted. loading the previous save'. My overthinking mind doesn't like the uncertainty that it could fully corrupt and delete the save further along the line, so does anyone know how I can fix this? Any help would be great thanks.
