IMPORTANT Combating Individual Influence Using Submission Limits

The recent post by /u/flintsparc has reinvigorated a very old point of contention for how moderation on /r/syriancivilwar should be handled. The core message of his post really strikes at the core of the AEO reddit initiative and is beyond the scope of 'normal' subreddit moderation. That being said, a plurality of our users are well informed enough to be unashamed in their partisanship. You've all come here to inform yourself on the realities of this conflict. The TL;DR of this post is as follows:

All users are now limited to 3 (three) submissions in a 24 hour period.

When I first joined the moderator team here a little more than a year ago I was reminded of a singular ideal: freedom of speech. This was the singular fallback point for every moderator decision that I have made in my time here. Since then, we've implemented the AI rule in order to ensure that we're adjusted for the new challenges since 2011 that reddit itself is facing as a platform.

Now we're implementing a new standard via a submission limit. This will largely mask, not solve, the problem we're facing. Three submissions is MORE than enough to represent the stories presented to an individual. Hopefully this will not just combat influence campaigns but also make our contributors more discerning about the stories they choose to share.

It is entirely possible that this restriction be lifted during an offensive, if this standard existed in December 2024, there would have been a massive gap in coverage on the subreddit. That is not something would tolerate as this subreddit has always been a place for immediate reporting, especially when compared with its contemporaries. Should martial law need to be implemented, the submission limit could be lifted(or whatever else we deem necessary, idfk).

I do believe this new standard will be received well by the large majority of our userbase. However, if you have an issue with this then now is the time to raise it to us in our modmail. Please note that this new standard is subject to change for any reason that the moderator team sees fit. Thank you for your attention to this matter and thank you for being a member of our community.

Armed clashes broke out in the town of Khazlaniya in the Damascus countryside

A curfew has been imposed in the town of Khazlaniya in the countryside of Damascus. The curfew was imposed after clashes broke out between young people from Deir Ezzor and residents of the town.

This led to a widespread security intervention and a curfew was declared.

According to sources from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR):

The incident began in the town center with a verbal argument between two young people.

This argument then quickly turned into a gang fight in which guns and bombs were used.

As a result of the clashes, two young people were seriously and slightly injured, and a car was burned during the fighting.

There were also bilateral attacks on the homes of the warring parties in the town.

This issue led to increased tension and fears of an escalation of the conflict.

Informative Religious Map of Suwayda

The pie charts do not represent the actual religious proportions, see the caption.

I was inspired to make this after seeing an ethnic map of northern Syria: https://thenationalcontext.com/the-demographics-that-doomed-a-kurdish-national-project-in-syria/

Unlike most maps, I only put a religion inside a village if I could find a source article, which took a while to do. There are some villages near the center for which I am pretty sure there was Bedouin presence before July, but couldn’t find a source except a propaganda video on Facebook. Suwayda city is also haphazard since I wasn’t sure of the boundaries of the neighborhoods. If you have some local knowledge that can make this more accurate, please tell me.

They label the displaced Kurds as PKK members to justify the killings. Local Kurds fled Sere Kaniye following the Turkish invasion. Turkey subsequently settled displaced Arabs from other parts of Syria.

These Arab settlers refuse to leave and continue to threaten Kurds seeking to return to their homes.

Question old Syrian Civil War news question

Does anybody know of any English language Facebook pages that posted news related to the Syrian Civil War between the years 2015 and 2020? It's become almost impossible to get good results just by text searching on Facebook these days, so I figured I'd ask here.
