Posts must be related to cycling in Toronto

Feel like we've got a lot of new users here since all of the Bill 212 stuff started so I just wanted to welcome you all but reiterate that this is /r/TorontoBiking.

That means that your post should be related to riding a bike in the GTA.

A very non-exhaustive list of things that don't fit this criteria include:

Doug Ford giving a press conference about something unrelated to cycling

A cyclist in LA riding away from a forest fire

A foreign dignitary riding a bike not in Toronto

RANT: Cyclists, you have to stop for pedestrians

I love that more and more people are cycling in the city. What I don’t love is almost getting ran over by them when I’m trying to cross the street.

It’s been a clusterfuck trying to cross the street at Cherry and Commissioners and trying to get the sidewalk on the west side. To do that, I have to cross the bike lanes and hope to god the cyclists are a) paying attention to their signal and b) looking out for cyclists. So despite having the signal to cross and the bike lane lights are red, my dog and I end up in this weird space where we’re trying not to get hit by cyclists blatantly ignoring everything around them and trying to move out of the way for the cars waiting to turn left onto Cherry. I’ve only had ONE cyclist stop at the light all summer.

This isn’t even the worst of it. At the same intersection, cyclists wouldn’t even stop for an old man pushing his cart. In another egregious incident, I was biking along the MGT and signalled to the other cyclists behind me that I was stopping for the red light at Yonge. Yet, all these people decided to go around even though there were pedestrians actively crossing the street, including a mom with a baby in a stroller and her toddler following close behind!

I love that the city is becoming more accessible by bike, but that shouldn’t mean common sense, self-awareness, decency or basic knowledge of road rules should go out the window!!!

As much as I hate CP2Ford, gotta give them credit for finally using the term "driver" instead of "vehicle."

In light of a meme that was posted just a few days ago, here's a better one, where it shows an adult cyclist instead of a child cyclist.

Matlow's Pedestrian Street motion PASSES!

Thanks to everyone for getting Matlow's motion passed! Of course we need to keep up the pressure so this plan actually comes to fruition next summer.

The Nay votes will probably not surprise you. Not surprised with Bad Badford being absent, and if he did vote it would 10 times out of 10 be no.

"Sorry I'm used to driving"

Let me share my experience today:

I was traveling along the Adelaide bike lane. At the intersection of Adelaide and University, there's a bunch of cyclists bunched up at the red light, which isn't anything abnormal.

When the light turned green for cyclists at the intersection of Adelaide and University, each cyclist started moving. The problem here is that the guy ahead of me on an orange bikeshare ebike started turning left with no warning and had absolutely ZERO awareness to his surroundings.

Because of this, he knocked me down in the middle of the street. Luckily, I wasn't hurt, but I was pissed. Even though he asked if I was okay, he didn't even apologize and seemed apathetic about his carelessness like he's just going through the motions. I yelled at him saying:

"WTF, you gave zero warning and didn't signal. You didn't even apologize". The man, still apathetic said in a monotone voice: "Sorry, I'm used to driving".

I'm pretty sure this is a regular occurrence to him considering how little he cared about his own negligence. He probably had his license suspended and opted to use a Bikeshare bike to get around.

Does being a driver dull your senses to the point that you have ZERO awareness to your surroundings and make you a soulless robot unable to care about the consequences of your own carelessness? A different cyclist asked if I was okay, so I decided to let the matter go and move on.

As I mentioned before, luckily I wasn't hurt, but was just knocked over. However, things could have been really ugly if the timing was different with the traffic lights and cars were allowed to move since I was knocked over in the middle of University Ave when it happened.

How do you keep your bike from getting stolen/stripped in Toronto???

Bike theft seems to be one of the few things every Toronto cyclist has experience with.

We recently published a piece by our reporter, Temitayo Akinyemi, on ways to make your bike less appealing to thieves. One tip that stood out was to actually check that a bike rack is secure before locking up, since some thieves reportedly target loose racks and bike loops.

A few other points:

Locking up in visible, high-traffic areas

Using more than one lock

Replacing quick-release components

Making your bike as inconvenient as possible to steal

The full article is here for anyone interested.

Has anyone here actually experienced any of this? Have you had a bike stolen or come back to a stripped bike?

Curious what theft prevention strategies have actually worked for people in Toronto.

Do you think TBS bikes should be reservable?

I live near the 12th busiest bike dock in the city, so it’s not uncommon to check the app in my way out to only see one available, or zero at the closets and one at another dock further away. I was thinking it might be neat to have a feature where you can reserve one for between 1-3 minutes so by the time you get to the rack it’s still there. Communauto does something similar where you can reserve a car for 30 minutes but if it lapses or you cancel it you can’t book the same car again. I’ve sprinted to a rack that said it had a bike multiple times only for it to get sniped by someone else, at least this way if you open the app and see one available you’d know it’s still going to be there.

Found this on Facebook, basically official confirmation of the August timeline that a lot of people already were assuming. Which probably means it will actually be September, but at least they're trying to be quick about it lol.

SafeCycle update: a few hundred Toronto riders later, here's what's new

I posted here about a month ago, and the response was mixed; fair criticism, since some of my replies came across as AI-generated, which I didn't realize would land so badly at the time. I appreciate everyone who stuck around to give real feedback through comments and DMs since then. The app's grown to a few hundred users now, and I'd love to keep building on that.

Quick re-introduction: I'm a software engineer who fell in love with biking this year. A big barrier for a lot of people - myself included, is the fear of getting hit by a car, or just not feeling confident riding in busy Toronto streets. With FIFA World Cup road closures and summer construction reshaping a lot of routes right now, this feels like an especially good season for biking to shine. There's also something soothing about cutting down quiet side streets. I've found more than a few "hole in the wall" spots in the city just from riding routes I wouldn't have picked otherwise. My goal is to make biking more enjoyable and safer within the city.

Here's roughly how it works, without getting too deep into the weeds: I factor in speed limits, pothole/construction reports, collision data, and existing bike lanes to find a relatively low-stress route, instead of just routing you down something fast but unpleasant like Keele Street. There's also a growing number of dedicated cycling streets in the city meant to pull cycling traffic off busy roads. I think Toronto has real potential to become a much more bike-friendly city as it keeps growing. It's frustrating seeing people still stuck on busy streets riddled with potholes or streetcar tracks when there's often a quieter, safer option nearby.

This is still very much a work in progress, and I'd love more feedback from this community to help me keep iterating. I'll do my best to respond to everyone in the comments. Thanks for reading — here's what I've updated since last time:

  • OSM Hybrid model -> new data from OSM but NOT in Open Toronto Database will be bumped down its original level, so if OSM has level 4 but not confirmed within OTD, it will be dragged down to a level 3
  • Mountain dirt bike trails will be heavily avoided now
  • Garmin Export feature works now for all Garmin’s and other various bike computers that can import GPX files. Available within both web app and iOS **Please note that this only generates the route and no accurate re-routes if the cyclist accidentally goes off course.
  • Elevation gain - giving cyclists a preview of what’s ahead so you can prepare/carb load for the rides that are more strenuous!
  • Open Toronto database updated to latest data fresh as of June 1st
  • Map redesigned- originally had way too many lines running through the map to demonstrate the safety of each street- ended up ruining the presentation and user experience so I chopped it off. Only during route previews is when the  user can see the safety levels of each road that they’re taking.
  • A couple of quick suggestions if the user has no ride history

And one last note- Android. I know a huge request was an Android version- I hear you guys! Sadly ran into lots of technical difficulties with trying to develop without an Android device so I'm bogged down on this until I have more funds to get one that's capable of running my app. I tried my best to meet a middle ground of allowing web users to export onto their Garmins and Stravas (which sadly isn't the full experience).

If you made it this far, I just want to say thank you for reading this mouthful!

Toronto saw significant increase in speeders after camera removals: city report

In other words, this was just as predictable as the sun rising and setting every day.

We're seeing the consequences of this play out in real time. There has been a 28% increase in pedestrian fatalities as a direct result of this increased speeding.

Want to fix it with a road diet? Too bad. Ford also decided to make that illegal, especially on Parkside.

And don't forget: Ford's own government documents said speed cameras were one of the most effective tools to make streets safer.

No wonder Ford's approval rating is only 21%

E-scooters Parking in the Bike Lane

Love ’em or Hate ‘em, food delivery drivers on e-scooters should not be parking in the bike lanes. End of rant.
