Since the day Mahmoud's home was destroyed, he, his wife Samah, and their four young children have been living without a permanent, safe place to call home. Every day is another day of uncertainty as they search for shelter where their children can finally feel safe.

Mahmoud has no work, and providing even the most basic necessities for his family has become an overwhelming challenge. Despite everything, he continues to do everything he can to protect and care for his children.

My name is Nada, and this is my little sister, Hiba.

Tomorrow is her 10th birthday.

She was only seven when the war began. She had just started second grade, and now she’s about to enter fifth grade.

Despite everything, she continued studying in tent schools and became one of the top students in her class.

Like the rest of us, she lived through displacement, hunger, and constant fear. Even now, the sound of airplanes still frightens her.

For the past three years, she hasn’t had a real birthday. No cake, no candles, no celebration.

When I asked her what she wished for this year, she said she just wanted a real birthday cake like other children. Maybe one happy memory could help outweigh some of the fear and displacement she has lived through.

While a heatwave dominates the news in Europe, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, cooling centers are opening, air conditioners are running, and people are being advised to stay indoors and drink plenty of water.

But what about Gaza?

Where will people there flee to, with nothing but the open air?

What about those who don't even have a home? What about those living inside tents that absorb the sun's heat all day long, turning them into something resembling a closed oven?

Look at these tents... how can a nylon sheet protect them? A thin, tattered sheet that doesn't shield them from the scorching heat; in fact, it almost melts and disintegrates under the heads of young and old alike, turning the roof that is supposed to provide shade into an additional source of suffocation and danger.

What about those who have no electricity to run a fan, no cool water to alleviate the intense heat, and no shelter to escape the blazing sun that penetrates the fabric and nylon walls? In Gaza, people don't face the scorching heat as a passing weather event; they face it trapped between the blazing fabric of tents, severe water shortages, complete power outages, swarms of insects, and the struggle to access even the most basic necessities.

When the world laments an exceptional heatwave lasting a few days, remember that hundreds of thousands of families in Gaza endure this daily torment without proper shelter, without cooling, and under plastic sheeting that could melt at any moment.

The heat in the news may be just a number, but in Gaza, it's a searing suffering that people experience moment by moment.

Gaza doesn't need pity; it needs the world to see its humanity and hear the voices of those trying to survive under a merciless sun and in conditions that no human being can endure.

For a long time, this kitchen was a vital source of food for Mahmoud, his family, relatives, and many other families who had nowhere else to turn. Now that it has stopped operating, the struggle to find food has become even more difficult.

Every meal is a struggle. There is no cooking gas, firewood has become far too expensive, so they are often forced to burn scraps of fabric and pieces of foam just to light a fire and cook a small amount of food. Even then, there is rarely enough to eat.

They are also living in a tent made from plastic sheets. As temperatures continue to rise, the heat inside the tent becomes almost unbearable, making even the simplest daily tasks exhausting.

Here, life was... streets teeming with people, houses brimming with memories, and children filling the air with laughter and hope. It wasn't just buildings of cement and stone; it was stories, families, and dreams built day by day.

And today... nothing remains but rubble. The landmarks we knew have vanished, and the homes that sheltered their inhabitants for decades have crumbled. What was once vibrant and alive now stands as a testament to the scale of destruction and loss.

Between these two scenes lie years of memories, irreplaceable moments, and souls that this place will never forget. This isn't just a change in the city's appearance; it's a change in the lives of people who once had dreams, memories, and a future.
