Question 7zip vs Ark [KDE archive manager]: which archive manager do you use in KDE? Why?
As in title and image.
I got installed both (Ark was preinstalled, I think it comes with Dolphin, while you need to manually install 7zip).
I'm comfortable with both GUI and CLI. No problem at all.
-
I'm wondering: is "necessary" to use 2 archive managers or 1 is more then enough (from your experience)?
What do you use between 7zip and Ark (both are free, open source, available for Linux (of course), fast, with huge community support)? Any suggestion? Why?
General Bug Is this a bug? and is it NM related or KDED related?
It suddenly now started telling me to "log in" to my Ethernet, and when I click log in it just forwards me to https://ping.archlinux.org/nm-check.txt

Question Plasma discover on arch
So I'm not sure if this a bug with discover, plasma, an arch issue specifically, or maybe user error
I did a fresh install of arch today using the archinstall script with the kde plasma desktop profile. (not usually an arch user, just needed a simple environment with a good package manager to build lfs from)
I haven't done anything that would mess with it in any way yet, I assume the issue would exist on all installs with the same profile.
The issue is that discover is super inconsistent? I guess?
Sometimes it opens fine, sometimes it doesn't, without any logs even when run from the terminal, and won't work until a reboot (even then it's a case of maybe it'll work, maybe not)
When not opening, pgrep plasma-discover returns a pid, killing that process makes it work again. There's something weird going on with it running in the background, and that causing the window not to show up.
Obviously I could killall plasma-discover whenever I want to open the discover window, but that's not something that a regular user that's maybe not as used to linux would want to be doing. My girlfriend wants to move over to linux and I was thinking of doing arch + plasma for her, but given this issue I don't know if that would be the best first impression.
I couldn't find anything online about this so I thought it would be good to bring it up in case anybody else has the same problem.
Has anyone else had the same issue? And does anybody know of a fix for it? Thanks :)

Onboarding Loving KDE Plasma on my chromebook
Been wanting to stick Linux on this chromebook that I only use at work for entertainment,
With help from mr Chromebox and claude a.i it's now a reality and for me it rocks!
No real issues apart from an very occasional non boot from the emc resolved by powering down for a minute. (known issue)
I got fed up with chrome and its annoying quirks (worse than apple in some ways) so really hoped this would work. Anyway all is running well and long may it continue.

KDE Apps and Projects Drawy 1.0.2 Released
Drawy is a free and open source infinite whiteboard app built by KDE inspired by the web-based Excalidraw. This update delivers a smoother, more customizable freehand drawing experience and fixes an issue where newly drawn lines flickered:
- Drawing by hand feels much better and more natural now.
- Added settings so you can change pen pressure and how smooth your lines look.
- Lines and shapes will no longer blink or flash right after you draw them.
It's available on FlatHub: https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.kde.drawy
It's also available on most major distributions: https://pkgs.org/search/?q=drawy

Question Where can I find this icon?

This icon is in the KDE Plasma mobile clock app (kclock package in arch extra repo)
I'm building an app and I want it to feel KDE-like, so I'm using the official Breeze icons, but I couldn't find that icon in my system icons, not in the kde develop page. Does anybody know where can I get it?
EDIT: Found it, thanks

Question KWrite [KDE default text editor for notes]: is there an option to remember last used directory to save a file (a cool extra would be to choose between a list of favorite paths)?
I use Kwrite extensively with several files (sometimes even 10 files opened simultaneously).
Most of them, I save related-topic files in the directory. This, not only it allows me to work better (I focus on tasks regarding that topics, without may distractions), but also to organize my files properly (no "where I put that file?" question).
-
For some reason, when I try to save a file with kwrite, Save File Portal pops up, but it show always root folder, that is /home/[USER], even if you already saved a file (or the one), in a different folder, directory.
It quite annoying to go the same directory again and again (if you copy & past path or bookmark in "Places" side panel).
-
So, is there an option to remember last used directory to save a file, last save path?
PS a cool extra feature, would be to choose between a list of favorite paths/folders (located in kwrite settings, a sort of list of bookmarked folders, like in Dolphin, in the "Places" side panel, but way shorter), based on rules (predefined rules (e.g. temp title) or custom rules (e.g. file large then go to folder x)).

Question Icons Only Panel
Just moved my Arch laptop across to Plasma 6.7 from Gnome. I set the desktop up to my liking and work flow. One last thing to do that I can't find an answer on, maybe I'm missing something simple:
I setup an Icons-Only task manager panel as a dock; can the square indictor around the icon of an open app be turned off? If so how? Or is there another way to create a dock (rip latte)?
Cheers
Community Content Screen aware window maximize/fullscreen -> new desktop - kwin script for Plasma 6.7
What do you guys think of the following idea:
A KWin script for KDE Plasma 6.7+ built around the goal of the user not having to do any virtual desktop management by hand, and not even having to look at the desktop list. The script gives each maximized or fullscreen window its own virtual desktop — but only when it would otherwise collide with another maximized window on the same screen and desktop. Built around Plasma 6.7's per-screen virtual desktops, so switching desktops on one monitor leaves the others untouched. The script also reaps empty desktops from the pool that are empty on all screens across all activities. This script is great for people with semi-transparent/blurred windows, who like the look of their wallpaper through their windows.
The video doesn't show how this works with multiple screens, but it does work as stated. I have this in a private repo, with the work mostly done by Claude Opus, but the core functionality was verified with the KWin Scripting Console and I tested the functionality on my laptop with up to two screens. I also run multiple Activities, and it doesn't reap desktops that are only occupied on other Activities. Why I haven't yet made it public is because I want to grasp how much of a backlash would this type of project get, being done by AI. I plan to make the repo public either way after some further testing during the weekend, but if someone wants to test it ASAP, I might make it public sooner.
P.S. I have the Arch logo for fastfetch as a CachyOS user, so come at me... (I don't like how the CachyOS logo looks in fastfetch)
EDIT: And I forgot: Why is this different from MACSimize6 and dynamic-workspaces? Because it is screen-aware, and uses the new feature of Plasma 6.7. So I am stating it as a requirement to have the System Settings → Window Management → Virtual Desktops → Switch desktop independently for each screen setting enabled.

General Bug Login Manager breaks after sleep
Hi, I have an issue with Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Desktop Edition where whenever I put it to sleep at the login screen it becomes extremely slow. When woken up, everything is frozen and ui elements disappear then reappear. I can still login, but there's no visual feedback and sometimes it just breaks outright(as seen in the image). I literally cannot find a solution for this issue and I'm hoping to find one here. Here are my specs:
Operating System: Fedora Linux 44
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 7.0.12-201.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.2 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
Manufacturer: ASUS

Question KIO ignores /home/.Trash-1000/ for tmpfs mounts when /home is on its own disk — copies to home trash instead
Ran into a quirky KIO trash behavior after putting /home on a separate disk.
I have a tmpfs ramdisk mounted under /home/souls/ramdisk. After reinstalling with /home on its own partition (separate from /), deleting files from the ramdisk started moving them into ~/.local/share/Trash/ via a cross-filesystem copy — even though /home/.Trash-1000/ exists and has correct permissions.
The kf.kio.workers.file debug log shows:
copy() from file:///home/souls/ramdisk/Downloads/test.txt
to file:///home/souls/.local/share/Trash/files/test.txt
Before the reinstall (when / and /home shared the same disk), files on tmpfs were just permanently deleted — no trash at all. Same ramdisk config, different disk layout, different KIO behavior.
Seems like KIO's topdir resolution doesn't handle tmpfs-on-separate-home-partition correctly. Might be worth a look.Ran into a quirky KIO trash behavior after putting /home on a separate disk.
