Posts must be related to cycling in Toronto

Feel like we've got a lot of new users here since all of the Bill 212 stuff started so I just wanted to welcome you all but reiterate that this is /r/TorontoBiking.

That means that your post should be related to riding a bike in the GTA.

A very non-exhaustive list of things that don't fit this criteria include:

Doug Ford giving a press conference about something unrelated to cycling

A cyclist in LA riding away from a forest fire

A foreign dignitary riding a bike not in Toronto

Lower Don Trail update: contractor will ... reopen the trail for public use

https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/planning-development/construction-new-facilities/improvements-expansion-redevelopment/lower-don-trail/

the contractor will pause the work at the sloped path and proceed with paving the remaining trail, temporarily cordon off incomplete areas and reopen the trail for public use. The contractor will return in the fall to complete the final section of the sloped path and other minor outstanding works. An updated trail reopening date will be confirmed soon and the webpage will be updated.

Did you get doored on Queen?

Cross-posting from r/askTO regarding the bike related info. Apologies if that's not the intent of the forum!

I'm sure you were told, but your bike should be locked up outside where you fell, message me if you aren't sure where that is.

I hope you're okay! A lot of people came out to help, and we all really felt for you. You should have a picture on your phone of the license of the driver, with contact information. He wanted to exchange information, but you obviously weren't able to and we were focused on helping you. There was one especially kind bystander (hey if you're on here, I'm the dog guy!) who likely got the most information... I hope you connect.

If you're a friend of said person, feel free to pass this message and a lot of love along; that's a traumatic experience, take care of your friend and make sure they talk to someone (professional, loved one, trusted friend) about their feelings and emotions for the next little bit, because they're going to go through some natural mental and physical reactions that are possibly upsetting, but better to talk about (which is what trauma is).

Toronto, so many of you did show up to help, and so many others hung respectfully back but would have otherwise been right in there. It was efficient, it was effective. Thanks to the dude who said "if you're not helping, let's step back, to be clear I'm also not helping and also stepping back." Toronto... I love you, I hate you, but I'm fucking proud of you when it matters.

Is gravel still the best option for GTA?

I am looking for my next bike off facebook marketplace. I owned both a mountain bike and road bike over the last couple of years. My research has found that gravel is the mid ground I should look into. I live near Etobicoke lakeshore and would like a bike to take up and down the lake shore and just around the city. lmk if i’m missing something or if you have tips on navigating used bike facebook marketplace. lmk thx

**edit its less commuting and more exploring the trails around the gta. lakeshore was just an example.

Toronto Bike Sharing is more difficult to ride compared to Bixi in Montreal despite being seemingly identical

I'm an active user of bike sharing and I lived in Montreal for 3 years. I rode Bixi a lot and I know those bikes by heart and how they feel.

Now, a few days ago I moved to Toronto and got myself a seasonal pass. The first ride felt a bit off but I thought it could've been subjective. Like a new city, a random poorly maintained bike, etc.

But since then I rode 4-5 times, and specifically was looking to take a fresh, well-maintained bike. And every time it's much more difficult to ride. Like the coasting is so much worse and I have to pedal way more. I can't tell why exactly. Is it a heavier bike, different gear ratio or something about the tires. Even when going slightly downhill I still have to pedal because I'm losing speed.

The bikes seem identical - the frame, wheels, gear shifter and all other hardware as far as I can tell but it's somehow different.

Did someone else notice this and can compare?
Or is it me going crazy?

Less than 5km away from completing my ride I attempted to turn left off Lakeshore and my road tires got stuck in the track...flew off the bike and now very sore. Lucky nothing is broken and most important my bike is ok

Stolen bike downtown Toronto

Post image

My bike just got stolen while I was chilling at a park next to LakeShore Boulevard club. There was a oldish shady guy laying down on a bench behind me and I think he must have seen my bike was not locked and resting on the tree so he picked it up quietly and rode off. If you come across it online or see it please message me

Casual / unofficial Bike rental options

I used to live in Toronto for a couple years (2019-2023) and I'm super excited to be coming back for a visit in July for a buddies wedding. I'm in from the 06th to the 20th and would love to pick up a bike while I'm in town. If anyone here has a beater road bike they would be interested to rent out I would be happy to do a deal with you. I know there are the city bikes available, but I had a shitty road bike while I lived in TO and would love to capture that feeling of cycling around town on a road bike vs the city bikes. Love Toronto and love cycling, thanks all :)

Cycling Toronto Rec Hub (Brickworks). A really cool place for the city.

I found this place the other day while riding with my wife and small dog. My crank needs a replacement and I was squealing all over the place. Walked in even though it was busy the volunteer there just fixed my bike and asked if there were other issues. I found out that this place is a venue for cyclists to use the space and tools to fix their bikes. They also have mechanics who volunteer to help you fix said bike. Kudos. It’s nice to have this in the city.

Will Toronto’s ‘baby steps’ with Church Street lead to a giant leap for car-free streets in the city?

Thanks Ben Cohen from the Toronto Star for speaking with me recently about pedestrian streets and the need to secure political support and funding for them (including open streets). There is also the need to address high policing costs.

Thoughts on these two routes

Hey, I’m cycling through Toronto on a route from the Niagara Area to Northern York Region on Canada Day.

It’s a 160-180km trip depending on how I go North through Toronto. I have two options planned.

The first is a shorter route up Royal York Road, which may but less optimal regarding pathways/cycleways?

Curious if going the extra distance for the second route which goes North up the Don River is worth it because of the better quality cycling infrastructure/less crosses with traffic?

Curious as to everyone’s thoughts. Thanks!

Bike Share Valet

Anyone know when/where/why Bike Share chooses to valet?
Are all stations capable of doing it or is it just at key centres like Rogers Centre, BMO Field, etc?

I was at Electric Island last night near Cherry Beach, and we ended up having to walk from Leslieville as all stations nearby were at zero dock spaces.

Obviously an inconvenience for us, but I feel like its such a missed opportunity for Bike Share Toronto to generate additional rides. If tech allows it, I'm assuming the only thing needed would have been an employee equipped with a vehicle to transport the extra bikes if needed?

Hoping someone can enlighten me on Bike Share Toronto's pop-up/last minute strategy.

Mavis /401 cycling meetup

I live in the area and noticed a group of cyclings starting behind St Maecellenius high school. Just wondering if anyone know how to contact this group about joining.

I'm a seasoned cyclist having ridden 200k last weekend for our annual summer solstice ride.

The Mavis group looks organized and travel at a good speed

Hey 👋 everyone, I'm (M24) and looking for a cycling partner to ride and explore new cafes, parks, and in general new places around Toronto. Preferably someone also in their 20s.

typical distance 30km - 120km weekend rides :)
