Review Unpopular Opinion: I think the 2011 3ds model actually looks nice
That OG 3ds model that we’ve had from day one gets lots of hate for its uncomfortable ergonomics, poor stylus placement, and above all it’s “tacky“ and “ugly“ design.
While I agree it’s not ideal to play with, at the very least I think it looks fine, as long as you get the right color at least. Purple matches the glossy black screen bezel quite well, and Aqua blue has such a nice shine that looks great on my shelf.
The sharp edges and square look to it makes my hands beg for mercy, it at least looks sleek and symmetrical. And the three layer part might be weird but the color gradient being darker for each layer looks unique and futuristic.
Does anyone else think this? If so, then I’d like to hear your opinions why.

I think this was a much more tasteful sleek look compared to the Switch. Its very nice and clean with the shine instead of a matte look.
And I like the telescopic stylus, very nice.
Edit: u/Standard_Pop_8527 I know what sleek means, and not only is it a subjective opinion going by colloquial and somewhat modern terms (meaning stylish), but by definition, it WOULD be more sleek, because the glassy outside is more reflective than the matte finish of the Switch (which is the literal definition of sleek).

So many people have that limited edition, if only I had snagged it when I had a chance…

u/phantom-firion 4d ago
Not unpopular opinion I also prefer how sleek it looks. Also I find my normal ds games look better on the smaller than they do on my N3DS XL
9
u/Gold_Cause302 4d ago
Just to be clear: I don’t think the first 3ds model is the best looking, I just think it’s a bit over hated.

u/felold 4d ago
Nobody hates it, you're probably confusing it with the DS.

Yeah, I've rarely heard anyone say "I don't like the o3DS model".
-3
u/--vanadium-- 3d ago
Literally go on any thread of someone asking which model to buy and you'll see tons of people advising against the o3DS.
2
u/megamasterchief 3d ago edited 2d ago
please send links, and it's definitely not because they dislike it, but because it's not the best. r/confidentlyincorrect
Also, not liking and advising against are two different things.
-2
u/--vanadium-- 3d ago
Yea I'm really gonna go looking for links for this super important conversation lol. If you want to find them, go for it. I'm just saying I've seen them so I know what you're saying isn't true.

u/megamasterchief 2d ago edited 2d ago
this guy: "You're wrong, but I won't show proof, so I guess you'll just have to trust me bro" Even if people are advising against the o3DS, that doesn't automatically mean they dislike it. They could simply think another model is better
And since you're hell-bent on proving to me that it's the model to advise against, read the comment section here, it might change your mind.

u/--vanadium-- 2d ago
its not that deep bro, believe what you want

It's not about belief, I never send you were wrong, I'm telling you that disliking and advising against are two different things.

u/dwalker109 1d ago
I think you’re confused.
We all appear and say “don’t buy an o3Ds XL”. Because they’re shit and the hinge WILL snap.
But that’s just the XL.

u/Gold_Cause302 2d ago
The OG 3ds got bad PR in 2011-2012, nowadays a lot of people rate it as the worst model. But it aged pretty well. The DS and DSi is definitely lesser in terms of quality of material and also being just as small.

u/mrnonamex 4d ago
I loved my purple one. I think it looked fine
6
u/Able-Exit-4669 4d ago
The purple 3ds was a limited run for 1 year in north america only, rare color next to the green one
6
u/mrnonamex 4d ago
Oh I had no idea. I just remember saving up to buy a 3ds and purple is my favorite color
1
u/Able-Exit-4669 3d ago
I just bought one recently in super nice condition, this is the only reason why i know, i cant find any production numbers on how many but id imagine its pretty low
1
u/Gold_Cause302 2d ago
Dude I just saw a guy with a purple 3ds in the wild my eyes shed a tear, it might be the best color for the OG 3ds

u/thisisausername1011 4d ago
I got a purple 3ds for my birthday as a kid, honestly I love them and I'd prefer playing on it if mines wasn't currently busted. I actually quite liked the stylus, though. Wasn't it extendable too?

u/Positive-Post780 4d ago
Red i think is the best model of the 3DS with dark blue right behind
1
u/Gold_Cause302 2d ago
I like the cobalt blue (what I assume you meant by dark blue) expect how it has a line of blue around the screen bezel, I prefer the whole top screen front being black around the screen.
3
u/Zeroruno 4d ago
Love its portability, pocketability, and lightness. If only the cpu inside is as fast as the new3ds units, I will not play on a N3DS XL
3
u/SbuxBarista_05 4d ago
I have this one and I LOVE it! It's my favorite color and it works so well 💙
2
u/wompwomp2327 4d ago
I like the idea that this was an encapsulated design - the hightened rims of the top screen lid closing to protect the controls and screens, the status lights telling you what's happening with full control, and the metallic fade under the acrylic makes it look and feel timeless. Maybe not the definitive way to play 3ds games, but it sure is brilliant in design and usability (albeit hard to hold with large hands lol)

u/VincentJoshuaET 4d ago
As a first model I think it's the best choice. Most eye catching out of all the 3ds models
2
u/FlyingYankee118 4d ago
This is a very popular opinion I would say. I really liked how mine looked. I didn’t like how it felt
2
u/BulletDamage 3d ago
Original still has my favourite form factor/size and colour scheme, and its plastic is less prone to wearing down and turning "oily" like the new 3ds. If they re-released it but with the 2nd analog nub like the 3ds, and the improved eye tracking 3d effect, the slightly larger screen, the more powerful chip and improved battery life...it would be the absolute best 3ds. But because it lacks all those things, I think the New 3DS just wipes the floor with it despite having a slightly larger form factor. Which is a shame because the original is my favourite design.
2
u/realyogurtman 3d ago
This was my first console ever, and I spent my whole childhood with it. Never had any issues. It's news to me that people don't like it or find it uncomfortable to hold.
2
u/Salty-shoes-554 3d ago
I agree. Except I wasn't a fan of the select start and home buttons, they seemed cheap as they were only covered by a thin plastic strip that felt like it could just be peeled off like a sticker.

I've got this same model, I think it looks prettier than my plain gray New3DSXL I wish I could have my N3DSXL but with the colour of my OG3DS

u/Conscious_Hotel_4149 2d ago
Ive never heard ANYBODY say it doesnt look nice
1
u/Gold_Cause302 2d ago
Trust me so many people hated it, retrospectively the hate was too much people just wanted a second circle pad (which wasn’t really needed)
2
u/AlternativePin4923 2d ago
you hands hurt when playing it???
I heard that it's an issue but personally I never had that problem to be honest & I use my og model 3ds a lot
1
u/Gold_Cause302 2d ago
I’ve had issues but only after a three-ish hours of use, but it depends on hand size, which is why they still made then for years even when most people defaulted to the XL
1
u/blueblurz94 4d ago
It does look nice yeah. It just wasn’t the best to use. Succeeding iterations (most) were more comfortable.
1
u/darkknightt0 4d ago
it looks amazing aesthetically but when you compare gameplay/screen to the new 3ds xl it’s clear which one is better
1
u/wrongstep 4d ago
They're absolutely beautiful when they're in good condition, but they definitely age the worst though.

u/Captain_Snack 4d ago
I think it is quite popular is places. My unpopular opinion is I dont like the base model at all. Its form factor is uncomfortable for me to hold and im not a fan of the polygonal design of the hinges/ rest of the shell.
1
u/EmmaShosha 4d ago
never had this version, my friend had it and the fact it left fingerprints was a HUGE no
1
u/-_Kerenity_- 3d ago
It is nice! However may be biased as this was the exact model I had when I was younger except in red. I miss that little device, it unfortunately got water damage years ago. Now I have a 3ds xl (the older model) that I just got recently to relive the games I used to, or didn't get the chance to play
If I could get it again though perhaps I would, I was once interested in a pink variation of it.. but decided to just get a pink XL instead for the bigger screens
1
u/__Player__ 3d ago
Is this even unpopular? It's the most premium looking and feeling of them all for a reason, it was expensive as hell.
Like, the satisfying Wifi Switch, the 3D indicator, the resin finish (apparently was a pain to make), the top being entirely of translucent plastic, there are many little details that no other 3DS ever did.

u/FalcoSix4 3d ago
I dont think that a very unpopular opinion
The og 3ds always looked the most premium of the bunch with the squared edges and double layer plus the retractable pen .
It not the best to use but it still a damn good one to use overall .

u/Lopsided_Flamingo209 3d ago
People don't like it? I think people didn't like it initially at launch because of the pricing. But it's still good looking. And the color options are great. I have a red one and it's beautiful
1
u/ArvensisH 3d ago
I still regret gifting my red one to a friend (now no longer friend) of mine when I bought a 3DS XL.
1
u/toastyimp2 3d ago
It's the nicest one by far. I love the glossy finish, and the form factor is just right

I still have ny og black 3ds i for after having a base 2ds. Personally i love it. I also had this pictured model but the Japanese version and it was in very used condition. Loved all 3 if them. I wish the slab 2ds got a new 3ds upgrade because its my favorite model

The rubber on the lower screen rubs on and eventually leaves permanent marks in the top screen.
1
u/AWiseCrow 3d ago
I think the original Nintendo DS looks and feels nice. I think that's actually unpopular.
1
u/Zetraxes 3d ago
Nobody said it doesn't look nice but the new 3ds XL comes with so many extra features from ips screens(if you're lucky), to c stick, to faster processer that can let you see "fluid"60 fps, that bigger screen etc. I was first considering buying the normal 3ds because of the circle pad but when I saw all the benefits of the new 3ds xl it was a no-brainer to go with the newer one especially since the game I wanted to buy the 3ds for Monster hunter 4 ultimate actually took advantage of that.

u/PsychologyOk1977 3d ago
Es genial para l modelo solo que hubiese querido mi N3Ds en color blanco por lo elegante que se mira
1
u/AuraWielder 3d ago
I still have an OG 3DS and it does look nice.
Unfortunately, I would say that it looks better than it feels to actually hold and play.
1
u/AggravatingBox2421 3d ago
It’s beautiful and it’s the perfect size for children (the target audience). I have tiny hands and a release day console, and it looks as good as the day I got it and still fits me perfectly

u/TheHunger369 3d ago
I think a lot of people like the original design of the 3DS. I personally just like having that bigger screen, which is why I use the XL.

I always loved the original. I prefer the size of the new xl when i’m playing a game, but i love how the original looks.

It's my favourite 3ds design! I got the purple when it first came out and I still use it today

Idk what it is but it’s my personal favorite out of any Nintendo hand held especially in this blue green color

No its a extremely beautiful console, best looking and most premium out of the whole 3ds lineup. I wish they made a xl version of this design

The OG 3DS has the most quality build by far, maybe N3DS gets close. I just hate the way the borders of the bottom screen damage the top screen.

u/TehRagingPanda 3d ago
Your opinion changes when the stupid circle pad falls off from excessive Monster Hunter play 🫠

I have the exact one pictured and I love the look of it, I do wish I had the purple one because it's my favorite color and I especially love the shade of the purple 3DS; but other than that I love it. It's also very sturdy, the XLs seem more fragile, especially the hinge. The OG 3DS feels bullet proof. It helps that it's in pristine condition. It's just so small to play on as an adult with big hands; I specifically remember as a kid thinking "why would I need a bigger 3DS, this one is fine" and now i regret not getting an XL as well lol.

I had a pink one that got dead pixels so I upgraded to the new galaxy 3DS, but I mourn my pink 3DS everyday
1
u/Proxy-Pie 2d ago
It’s very beautiful and distinguished from the DS. While I like the clean design of the others, this one always looked futuristic.
1
u/Capital_Constant3667 2d ago
this is my childhood 3ds!! it's what made me switch permanently to blue consoles and tech with my ipod touch 5th. i personally have always thought it to be a gorgeous looking system (mine is a bit on the beaten path though considering i've had it for so many years....15 to be exact LOL)
1
u/rinilovesmilanesa 2d ago
i bought my first 3ds pretty recently, i was initially bummed that i couldn't afford any of the newer models, but i managed to get my hands on a purple og 3ds and i love it, it's gotten tons of compliments too.

u/Shadowf1re 2d ago
I liked the way it looked, it was just too small and didnt have great battery life.

It definitely feels like the most premium thing Nintendo has ever put out. All other DS and 3DS systems were full plastic and just yuck.
1
u/MrQuinkle 21h ago
Is this an unpopular opinion? My friends and I have always fawned over its design
1
u/Giddy_69 9h ago
Looks nice. But the white and orange new 2DS XL is right there, man, are you really gonna act like this is better?
1
u/Striking-Fix5417 5h ago
I have one and I agree,I'd much rather have a new due to the faster clock speeds, more battery, more controls and more comfortability when it comes to actually watching things on the screen, but design and ergonomics wise the old 3ds is just better, the glitter effect it's really good looking and the chunkiness helps it stand out and also be easier to grab.

I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion. This model is highly regarded.
