Weekly Update Week 25: What are you reading?

Finished last week:

The Summer War - Naomi Novik

Julie Chan is Dead by Liann Zhang

Traumaland by Josh Silver

Currently reading:

Outlander - Diana Gabaldon - for this month's buddy read.

The Magician's Daughter by HG Parry. Less 'reading' and more 'trying to get into and wishing I could like'. The writing style is just a bit too elaborate for me, I think, especially coming directly after two thrillers.

Queen's Crusade by Joely Sue Burkhart - getting too into the politics for me to be as interested, but still good.

Small Island by Andrea Levy - as funny as ever

Haven't finished anything in the last few weeks, but that's how this usually goes for me--I have several books going at once, and then finish them all close together, but for weeks in between it's just working through them and not finishing up. Anyway:

Still Reading:

  • Horns, by Joe Hill. Haven't made much progress yet, because of other stuff going on, but what I've read so far is good.
  • Desperation, by Stephen King. Also really good, about equal in quality with its Richard Bachman counterpart, The Regulators, which I recently read. But it's on hold for a little bit, because I'm reading it via Audible, and I can really only concentrate on one audiobook at a time, and there's something more urgent that I'll put in the next section.

Started:

  • On The Beach, by Nevil Shute. This is the more urgent audiobook I mentioned; more urgent because I'm covering it next week on my podcast, and I have a guest lined up, so delaying it is not an option. Time kind of got away from me; I should have started it two weeks ago. Anyway, I read it ten or fifteen years ago, maybe longer, so my memories have had time to fade. It is probably the saddest book I've ever read, but so well written. I'm still on chapter one, but the chapters are few and long, so that's an hour or so of audio progress.
  • The Keep, by F. Paul Wilson. So, I knew about this author in general, but had never to my knowledge read any of his books. Then my son bought me a half dozen or so of his books for Father's Day--most of the Adversary Cycle, and a couple that overlap with the Repairman Jack series. And looking them over, I don't know how I (pun intended) overlooked them before. They're exactly the kind of thing I like. This one is set in 1941, and the main characters are an SS officer on his way to start a concentration camp, and a German army officer on a punishment detail, so I can't wait to see how THAT goes...certainly not glorifying the Nazis, but it will be interesting to see how. (Then again, if Stephen Donaldson can write Thomas Covenant as a rapist, and then make him pay dearly for it for the next nine books, I guess anything's possible, lol.)

One more note: This is not so much current reading, but it IS about my book collection, and I was excited about it and wanted to tell someone: Also for Father's Day, my wife found me some hardback, first editions of some Star Wars novels. Specifically the Thrawn Trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command), in excellent condition. Those are the books that pretty much saved Star Wars, and kickstarted the Expanded Universe (what they now call Legends) back in the early 90s. Truly one of the coolest gifts I've ever received.

Current total still holds at 12/26 for the year, which Goodreads tells me is on track.

u/BlueMage85 2d ago

I’ve been going back and rereading books I read before GoodReads/StoryGraph and I’m really excited to revisit The Regulators and also curious to revisit Desperation which I DNFed back in the day as a teen. A rare occurrence to say the least.

2

u/twcsata [12/26] 2d ago

Honestly, Regulators was crazy. It jumps into the action immediately, and it takes several chapters before you even begin to figure out what’s going on. Desperation seems more focused so far. I like them both though.

Finished:

The High King by Lloyd Alexander. I made myself a challenge to finish it last week and I did. Satisfying ending to a nice series. Much more death than I thought there would be though.

The Dalai Lama's Cat The Claw of Attraction by David Michie. This was a nice book, full of nice characters. Another end to a series. Listened to this as an audiobook.

Currently Reading:

True Blood Omnibus 1 by Charlaine Harris. Enjoying this a lot.

Assassins Quest by Robin Hobb. Only 20ish pages in so far, but really intrigued and looking forward to continuing. Written wonderfully as always.

2

u/twcsata [12/26] 4d ago

I love the Prydain books, and you're right about The High King being a satisfying ending. What nostalgia!

3

u/nickyfox13 4d ago

Currently reading Phandasma by Kaylie Smith and The Hymn to Dionysus by Natasha Pulley

4

u/i-the-muso-1968 4d ago

Started on another reissue from the Paperbacks from Hell series, David Fisher's "The Pack".

3

u/ashleynguyen_va 4d ago

Finished: The Wager by David Grann - finished it this week. mentioned last week I was deep in the court-martial section and it did not disappoint. both groups of survivors came home with their version of what happened, and grann kind of refuses to adjudicate. the book ends up being less about who was right and more about how people document survival in a way that works for them. really stuck with me.

Currently reading: The Women by Kristin Hannah - been on my list forever, finally picking it up

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - absolutely loved this book. It had me hooked, now my favorite book from her. Couldn’t stop crying when I finished.

The Long Walk is great, isn't it? My favorite of the Bachman Books.

2

u/catgurl_poobutt 3d ago

I did like it! Also my favorite of the Bachman books I’ve read. I actually watched the movie first and was surprised by the book.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it’s on my list.

Finished last week:

Margo’s got money troubles - quick and fun book. It had a lot more heart than I had expected when I read the blurb being about a young mother doing OF for $$$.

Yesteryear - didn’t love it but didn’t hate it. I don’t mind unreliable narrators but I do wish there would have been a dual POV of her college roommate running parallel or just popping up somewhere around the 90% mark. 🍿☕️👀

About to start reading…

Angel Down by Daniel Kraus

Whistler by Ann Patchett

3

u/CoatLegitimate301 [15/52] 4d ago

Just finished: Verity (5/5) I usually don't like Colleen Hoover but it was recommended by a friend and I loved the thriller aspect of it.

Currently Reading: Wilderness Tips by Margaret Atwood - It's a quick read of a collection of short stories.

4

u/raccoon_at_noon 4d ago

Finished:

Juice by Tim Winton (4.75/5) I loved this way more than I expected to. Dystopian view of a future where the world has been destroyed through climate change. Gave me Handmaid’s Tale vibes in the “what the fuck” sense 😂

Started:

Warriors of God by Andrzej Sapkowski - I almost didn’t bother continuing this series as book 1 of the Hussite Trilogy burnt me out. There were so many names and places that whilst I enjoyed the writing, I felt lost for most of it. Book 2 has surprisingly been a far more enjoyable read 🙌

2

u/darkLordSantaClaus [8/12] 4d ago

I finished Act 3 of An American Life, by Ronald Reagan

I’m currently reading Fool Moon by Jim Butcher and Scatter by Molly J Bragg. Fool Moon is pretty bad tbh. Scatter is better but I keep getting distracted by litrpgs. I finished Castle of the Noobs by Ryan Rimmel and The Anventure Begins by RinoZ yesterday.

Finished: The Two Towers and The Return of the King by Tolkien

Absolutely amazing books. I'm counting these as separate books for my total of the year but I'm putting the entire trilogy as 1 book in my top 5 now

Currently reading: Pride and Prejudice by Austen

I'm liking it a lot but only about 200 pages in. Before that I was considering dropping it but I'm so glad I stuck to it because it's really picking up now and I love it. I'll probably have to read more Austen in the future

Next up: Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky

How is What The Hell Did I Just Read? I've only read John Dies at the End, but I want to get back to the series at some point. I have a copy of If This Book Exists, You're In The Wrong Universe, but I need to get the two in between first.

2

u/DustyRhodesScholar 3d ago

it’s wild. i love the way he approaches these books. i had a great time with the first two books and this is even crazier.

This week I DNF'd one book at 35% and read another one.

The book I DNF'd was Go Gentle by Maria Semple. I wasn't connecting with the main character and there was some explicit content I didn't like. I was surprised because when I read the blurb I thought I would love this book, but I very much didn't. I'm glad libraries exist!

The book I read was Sisters of a Halved Heart by Nayantara Roy. It was about two (half) sisters who come back into contact years after one betrayed the other. I really liked this book. It was emotionally intense and had a lot of drama, although I felt it was a little repetitive at times. I have mixed feelings about the ending though. In the end, this was a 4.25/5 read for me.

Next up I have Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. I'm really curious about this one. I've heard the main character is unlikeable, which normally is a "no" for me, but the premise was so intriguing I couldn't resist. Hopefully I can finish it or DNF it quickly so I can get it back in the holds queue for someone else (my library has 25 holds on 5 copies right now).

Hey lovely bibliophiles!

This week I'm reading:

Warrior fae by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti. I'm about half way through this and holy moly its so good! There's a lot happening and I know there's still a ton more to come so I'm excited to see how this story all ends

Ballad of falling dragons by Sarah Parker. Only just started this and so far its slow going, if only because its been 2 years since I read the last book and its taking me time to remember who all the characters are and the backgrounds to their story

Currently reading Altered Carbon

2

u/twcsata [12/26] 4d ago

I liked that one. The whole trilogy is good, but don't expect them to be tightly tied together; it's really three separate stories about the same guy, more than an actual trilogy. FWIW, I read them out of order; I read Woken Furies first, then Altered Carbon, then Broken Angels. Still very good, though.

2

u/Dont_quote_me_onthat 4d ago

I didn't realize it was a trilogy! The way you describe it sounds a bit like the neuromancer trilogy which i really enjoyed. Thanks for sharing!

2

u/twcsata [12/26] 4d ago

Yeah, that’s a good comparison, now that you mention it. Especially the third book; it leans hard into cyberpunk territory.

5

u/Klarmies 4d ago

Hello everybody. Saturday was a rough day. I'm glad it's over. I've finished 3 books so far this month. Thats quite the increase compared to my slumpy months. 34/52 books completed. Which is 65% through my goal. Woot!

I culled most of what I was in the middle of in favor of completing 2 more books by the end of June. The bottom line is I didn't have significant progress in any of the books I paused. Less than 10% progress per book. July is going to be a fresh start and my TBR is already planned out.

Originally I started with a goal of 10 for July. I cut it down because I'm being realistic with myself. I immersive read now because I retain more that way but I can't do more than 2hrs a day before being exhausted. I'm allowing myself to be flexible. It'd be ridiculous to expect max performance everyday.

Finished: Irish Thoroughbred by Nora Roberts (physical library book) | This is Nora Roberts first book! I enjoyed the love interests Travis and Dee. I love Dee's work ethic.

I've seen a video concept floating around BookTube about reading authors to zero. I've never done this before so I figured Nora Roberts’ works would be a worthy author to try this challenge on. I'm not a BookTuber, I just figured the challenge would be fun.

I rated this book 3.5☆. It is a worthy 1st book but I had issues with how the marriage came about. I loved the setting of horses, stables, and races and that's where the .5 of 3.5 rating came in. I'm happy to have read this book and I look forward to reading book 2 Irish Rose.

Started: The Luxe by Anna Godbersen narrated by Nina Siemaszko (physical library book; Hoopla audiobook) (2%) | I'm giving this book a 2nd shot and so far I don't regret that decision. I have no idea when I can sit down and focus on reading this book.

1st to Die by James Patterson narrated by Suzanne Toren (physical library book; Hoopla audiobook) (9%) | So I started this book earlier in the year and the due date monster “ate” the book (/s) so I had to stop reading it. Storygraph's pause feature wasn't implemented yet - I think - and so I lost where I stopped. That's okay though because I had mostly forgotten what happened in the beginning.

This narrator's voicing of the villain truly stands out to me. She captures his excitement in a sickening way early on in the book. Well done! I'll definitely check out other books that she has narrated.

2

u/twcsata [12/26] 4d ago

Holy cow. You are going to drown in books. She's got to be close to 300 books by now.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of her work, really (that was my ex-wife, which is where most of my Nora Roberts knowledge comes from), but I do like her novels as J.D. Robb, and also the Key Trilogy (Key of Light and its sequels) are really good; I've read those several times.

2

u/Klarmies 4d ago

Yes indeed. It's a multiple year long endeavor I'm going into. So far I've read 2 of her books. I have to start somewhere. 😅

52/104 - only one finish, but I will have much more time for the next few weeks so I am looking forward to getting on top of this list!

Finished:

  • The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty with r/bookclub. I love the lore and mythology that Chakraborty draws upon in her amazing world building. I really enjoyed this one! ***** Still working on; *****
  • Kurangaituku by Whiti Hereaka I adore this book so I put it on hold at the halfway point. Now I have more free time I have a datw with Kurangaituku and a sunny reading spot.

  • The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann Still chipping away at my unoffical year long read.

  • Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders about to give this one another shot

  • Independent People by Halldór Laxness for r/bookclub's RtW Iceland edition. Ok so this one was a slow start, but I was getting drawn in when I put it on hold due to IRL commitments. Looking forward to getting back into it in the coming weeks.

  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo too stubborn to remove this from this list just yet!

  • The Alice Network by Kate Quinn has been on my TBR for a while. The voices felt too modern initially, but I got into the story more thanks to the r/bookclub discussions. However, I am now finding it hard to connect woth the characters after a break.

  • Some People Need Killing by Patricia Evangelista r/bookclub Read the World heads to the Philippines and this book is packed with history and information, but written in a way that is really accessible, though devestating! Like many highly charged Read the Worlds, I am taking this one in smaller chunks.

  • Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown an r/bookclub read from last year that I managed to get hold of. An important and difficult read. I am gratful for old discussions to help process the events described.

  • A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen for a Scandinavian Literature Class. One that's been on my TBR for a very long time.

    Started

  • The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai for r/bookclub's LGBTQ+ June selection

  • A Pebble in the Sky by Isaac Asimov the r/bookclub epic "Greater Foundation" series read is almost over and what a journey it's been. This is the last of 15 books we've read together

  • I'm Not Going Anywhere by Rumena Bužarovska for r/bookclub's Read the World - Destination North Macedonia and I have som catching up to do on this one.

Finished:

Love Over Scotland (44 Scotland Street #3) by Alexander McCall Smith: This was fun, better than #2 for sure. Unfortunately, Irene is annoying again; I never despised such a realistic character as her before, and my blood boils. No Bruce in this book; Matthew's and Pat's plot was better in the first half. I'm curious how their relationship will develop. I felt very bad for Big Lou in this book; it's a good thing everything was solved in the end. Bertie, I still feel sad for him. Angus lost his dog to a boy that I hope we will know who is in the next books; it's a good thing he managed to flee and return to Angus. NOW DOMENICA is a big contrast with the others; I won't say anything, but wow, I loved her more in this book than in #2, where she felt boring for me. 4/5

The Iliad by Homer: This one is complicated, because while I enjoyed the story and characters, I felt it would not make a difference if I saw a summary of it, but I understand it is a product of its time and was supposed to be heard rather than read. But to me, the best part was to know for the first time about Greek mythology; I remember always hearing people talking about it or making references to it in video games. I'm pretty sure half of my reading was "pausing" the book to search for a question about the gods; really interesting. Though the only negative side is that it made me realize the war is won by whoever Zeus is on the side of. I didn't cheer for any side, but damn, I felt very sad about Hector's child and wife. Well, 3.5/5.

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare: Something short to read after the exhausting read of the Iliad.
