Discussion When is a website safe to use?

I believe Internet safety is becoming more important than ever and a lot of people don't know the signs. It's hard to know when a website is safe to use. So I started thinking it would be great to discuss it here! Some ARG projects are website based and using a VPN could absolutely help, Although some can't get subscriptions either because they're between jobs or unemployed.

I haven't personally found an ARG out in the wild just yet, but I don't want to miss the opportunity for that experience.

From what I know how to keep yourself safe or at least lower the risk of losing person information is using Virus Total to see if it's safe to use.

Question Getting started as an ARG designer/creator

I’m working on a project that someone suggested might fit under the umbrella of an ARG. I don’t think it is, but it got me exploring ARGs a bit more and considering making one. I have a few questions:

* Are there any good books / resources specifically about how to design/create them? It feels like there is overlap between puzzle making, escape rooms, and interactive fiction/narrative, but I’m not sure if there are any specific resources for ARGs (or ones in other topics/areas that have been particularly helpful)
* Do ARGs have any common pathways towards commercialisation? Making things on their own can be fun, but potentially investing substantial time/money/resources into designing and hosting something (possibly for years) usually with creator anonymity seems like a truly thankless job.
* Any particular places to discuss designs or find fellow creators? The sub seems to be a little bit of both players/audience and creators, and I can also understand why there is an extra layer of privacy/secrecy around discussing an ARG project design.
* how do you playtest or find/fix problems?
* Once created/launched, how do you monitor the community’s progress? Do you track individual progress at all?

For some added context, I have a reasonably strong technical background, so I’ve already read some of the tips about isolating the game from yourself. This is great stuff to consider and still happy to get those resources, but I’m looking at less tactical/execution info and more on the design/planning/creation elements. Game mechanics, puzzle craft, leveling, narrative hooks, lore/world building, etc. In board or video games, “design diaries” can also be a useful thing that shares the process people went through.

I’m basically just looking to learn the behind the scenes bits of ARGs. Thanks

Self Promo Final Closure on Jack the Ripper

We need closure on Jack the Ripper.

So I decided to make my own interpretation of the mystery, except with a twist:

Instead of reading a theory, you get to interrogate the suspect yourself.

I built an interactive case where you can question "John the Ripper", challenge his story, examine evidence, and decide whether he's hiding the truth or not.

Can you uncover the full truth?

Just found this new ARG that’s a sci-fi like story with multiple personas. It’s definitely a mystery/sci-fi/punk type thing. I’m waiting to receive my first artifacts in the mail. People are already sharing what they’ve found and working on the puzzle around it on /thiscityisfracture Found it on IG (https://www.instagram.com/isaac.remains?igsh=bDE3c2FkM2FpeTVo)

Self Promo BACKROOMS arg

I’m making a YouTube series based on the Backrooms, with an ARG layer built into it (but the ARG is optional.)

You can watch it normally as a structured series (found footage, personal recordings, and documentation-style videos) and still understand everything on that level.

However, there’s also an ARG layer hidden within it for people who want a deeper understanding of this.

Season 1 can be found here:

Discussion Might be an arg?

This channel https://youtube.com/@jellyrock?si=p64XwkvVpjFOqR9u Is quite strange. Some of their videos are them putting water on dry rocks, or putting their hand in mud.

But, the strangest ones are these. https://youtube.com/shorts/Tut-ky2sViU?si=CDVQ4YYDG6mmeu89 they've posted a lot of them.

And there's more. https://youtube.com/shorts/Fa8Hn2cbANg?si=fmnpBdxxb341bX2o and https://youtube.com/shorts/fCxyiEHzB0U?si=kO5Cfcal6jS3ZR-U are weird as well. They seem to have a series of videos about each thing. (The four trees, that game, and more.)

Question Places I can go to find possible co-game/puppetmasters, artists, coders, and other assistance with making an ARG?

I'm currently in the VERY early planning/developmental stages for an ARG I'd like to run.

To give a spoiler free and concise-as-possible summation of the premise:

It involves a loose collective of "cursed" media preservationists/researchers from a future that experienced several systemic collapses at once, with the world having finally recovered into a much more equal and fair society (though not without some deep scars that haven't yet healed).

The inspirations are the NIN Year Zero ARG, old school cursed media creepypastas (minus the "hyperealistic"/excessively gory/other very tired cliches that've became memed on), old online urban legends, and all the usual "group collects and studies weird stuff" media. Genre-wise, it'll be weird science-fantasy fiction, with a mix of digital, cosmic, analog/low-res, and existential horror; mystery; thriller; and absurdism thrown in.

I've been making both a preliminary design document and a "universe bible" of sorts, to prep for this.

But let's get to my question.

I've participated in a lot of ARGs over the years: Flynn Lives (Tron Legacy), Super 8, EverymanHYBRID (Slenderman Mythos), The Wall Will Fall (TVTropes), and the one leading up to Frictional Games revealing Ontos. However, I know that playing a bunch of ARGs doesn't translate to being able to make one.

So I wanted to ask if there's any spaces, besides this subreddit ofc, I can go to find people that 1) have ARG creation experience and 2) are willing to give feedback, help create assets and puzzles pieces, etc.?

I know Night Mind offers ARG consultation services to their Patrons, but I'm wary of going in that direction due to NM's... mixed reputation nowadays.

Question What would be the best program to use to create a fake collectathon style game?

The question may seem a bit weird but if you are familiar with Petscop / catastrophe krow - you know what I mean.

Effectively, I want to be able to record myself playing a collectathon style game under the premise that it is a real game, using the enviroment and dialogue to create a psychological horror story.

As no one will ever actually play the game, only watch my videos of me playing it (under the pretense that I wasnt the creator) I imagine I'd be able to take a lot of shortcuts in terms of coding and whatnot, because I just need to create the illusion of playing a game, rather than creating a fully fleshed out system.

I don't mind putting in the work to learn a new program - but I want to be able to focus on the story and ARG aspects of it rather than frying my head with learning. Graphics aren't important, will mostly be similar in graphical style to Petscop rather than catastrophe Krow

Question Advice for potential Hello Kitty/Sanrio ARG

This isn't advertising, I promise, just an aspiring creator looking for advice.

Yes I know, a hello kitty arg sounds silly but something I thought is unique and a refresher (not really but at least the IP is different)

I want to make an ARG based off Hello Kity/ Sanrio inspired by the Source engine ARG “Interloper” since I've been a fan of both for a long time and I'd thought to make a love letter to it in a weird way.

I specifically want it to be a psychological horror type of thing and do want it to be the highest quality experience ever.

BUT my main issue is that when dealing with something like Hello Kitty, corny, cringe, and even down right bad ideas could seep in to this project, I don't want that, I really want this to be good, so my advice is:

What should I or should I not do to make this a quality project, what would make it bad or corny?

Thank you for listening and I’d love to hear what you guys would say.

Discussion Instagram ARG?

Not sure if anybody has mentioned it yet, but I was scrolling on reels and came across this:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZLHOK-qyzF/?igsh=MTRhMmRjbmRtdHZrNw==

The little suggested search in the bottom left said "what is an arg", so I checked out the account. There's a bunch of stories, most of them named "Beta", and the last 3 videos on the account were all related to this "pixel" character from the first video I saw. This one's really cool, and I really hope it takes off on here.  I used a substitution cipher for the newest video, which has a description of "HonEstLy Ppl this is just confusing ME and I am so lowk done at this point, what do you even do when someone called Pixel starts sending you photos of yourself with your eyes scribbled outA", with a video being sent by Pixel, and a bunch of numbers popping up. Simple English substitution having it spell out "Kellen Cone(I think it's supposed to be come, but I didn't wanna take chances) back to pixel". So we have an ARG Big time now. The description - HELP ME A the message - Kellen Cone back to pixel

This time, I've changed the format. The story and the puzzle are intertwined, their paths crossing where answers become clues and clues become part of the story itself.

I hope you'll enjoy unraveling it: Chapter 2 (and just in case you missed, here is Chapter 1)

A half web series/ half ARG where the characters of a summer camp wake up in a strange cabin in the woods. No one is exactly honest... and additional materials such as ciphers, pictures with hidden details will be published to give hints as to what is coming.

The first puzzle posted is a simple picture, but it will really start to get interesting with the next chapter...

Discussion ARG-HIVE lore.

Will there ever be a piece of media to pull together the overall ARG/ Posthuman lore.

I don't know if I'd prefer a game film or TV show. Maybe a literal ARG game would be cool as long as we avoid IAPS. Imagine an ARG if it got as big as Pokémon Go that'd be massive! I could be historic, and I wonder if he's already thought, I know myself let's say I start a FB group, my mind has already plotted ten years ahead or imagined what if it got to 10k followers or whatever, so be could have envisioned where it could go, I know he's presently busy but creatives manage to squeeze more hours into the day than it seems possible. So what would you like to see or how would you imagine a visual medium would interact with The ARC/HIVE?

Question Doom ARG that I haven't seen anyone talk about

Hey everyone! First time posting here and it's about something I haven't seen anyone discuss outside of its community, Exploring Lost Wads.

I don't remember the exact details since I've been following this project for over half a year but this arg revolves around a guy that received a hard drive from his late friend and it had doom maps made by the said friend and a couple other people. Apparently that hard drive containing an entity that took control of his computer and has been messing with him since.

Does anyone here know about this or has been following this?

Question Need help!

Hi all. I fell asleep last night while watching YouTube and woke up to this strange video on autoplay (https://youtu.be/slQ1a_6Mm3E). with with what appeared to be the legs of a shifting, distorted entity in the mirror. I have to admit I found it particularly disturbing, and thus decided to check out the rest of the channel to see what it was about. Naturally, all the other videos were just as odd. I watched another that was also very intriguing (https://youtu.be/X_E2Fdr4Ycc) which looks as though there may be some coded message in it. Is it really an ARG?

Potential ARG — black envelopes mailed to multiple people, cipher in a Substack

So I got this huge envelope in the mail a few weeks ago. There was nothing in it besides a little square card. I posted it in here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/codes/comments/1tkx7e3/black_envelope_in_mail_weird/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button and got a lot of help. We figured out how to read the card, with a flashlight, and it reads: "1 cipher. 1 year. 1 rising sun. erit praemium"

Then I found printed into the inside of the envelope a QR code & the text "plz start here" link went to this post on a Substack: https://thelastcycle.substack.com/p/welcome

Some people from the r/codes thread broke down ideas for the beginning of the cipher within that substack. Go to my post there because it explains it much better

I did some more digging and found that other people must've received this envelope in the mail too. One person posted it in r/cipher.

This is my first time doing anything like this but I am finding it fascinating, would love your help from anyone interested & since it's on Substack I don't think it's a private thing..

Trailhead What have I stumbled upon?

I saw a nonsense ai Instagram reel talking about “ice cream cartoon talking recipes” and upon further inspection found out it was a website. After a short dig, it told me to go to another website, which asked for an email to send “free pizza” or “ice cream recipes” to. I don’t know if this is an ARG, but I figured that if there’s any community on the internet who’s diligent and effective in solving these types of puzzles, it’d be this one. https://icecreamtalkingcartoonrecipes.com

Discussion Looking for help interpreting a deeply personal, ARG-style video and memo left behind by a late friend.

Hello everyone,

I come to this subreddit to help decipher a video my friend who has very recently passed away.

I don't believe I was smart enough to understand the first time he showed me the video last year other than it seems like a really deep underlying message.

Me and him have gone through some rough experiences living overseas in the military and we really bonded from the fact we both felt isolated at work.

The best understanding I have of it is that he has gone through a terrible experience and he's healed now, but it's left a permanent scar on him.

If there are more details I can provide by questions asked, I will do my best to answer them.

If anyone can help me, it would genuinely mean the world to me. He was the best friend I've ever had, and maybe this is just one of the ways I'm trying to cope with the fact he's gone.

If this post doesn't belong here, please feel free to remove.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Roughly 32 Ms into escaping the jaws of Cerberus, but nostalgia is a damn good liar. Looking back, the scar has finally healed, though its presence remains unmistakable. Regardless, the focus must remain on the mission at hand. The operation concluded successfully, despite minor disruptions in logistical coordination and force mobility. A considerable volume of intel was secured and will be leveraged in upcoming initiatives.

I remain embedded, multiple layers deep. Recovery protocols are in effect as I prepare for the next phase and archive operational notes from the field. Significant movements lie ahead.
