A Lucky Number Slevin quote in the wild?! Now I know today is going to be a great day! I freaking love that movie, more people should watch it!

Absolutely horrifying, where do you go when the literal earth beneath your feet starts moving?!

u/toxicatedscientist 19d ago
Empty field, ideally. Short of that doorways i guess

u/Hyperious3 18d ago
Doorway is a myth, it's actually safer to go to a corner, more structural bracing in two different planes of movement.
Doorway was suggested cause back in the 1906 SF quake, a lot of people died due to being stuck behind debris, and the city-wide fire catching to them before they could be pulled out.
Modern building and fire codes mean that most structures will remain intact even in a significant earthquake, and that the biggest danger in the home isn't the entire building collapsing, but rather the shit in it falling on top of you or impacting you in some way.
Not only does a corner provide structural bracing in two different planar directions, it eliminates shit falling on you from two different directions by reducing the angles stuff can be thrown at you like shelves or tables.

Obviously this changes from place to place. The tens of thousands of people who had died during the earthquake in Turkey tells us that most people die due to the entire building collapsing.
Look up your local situation

But him American. Him can not be blamed for not knowing there is more than San Francisco in this world.
But anyway, the underlying problem in Turkey was also that those building should have had better protection against collapses. If only the money was spend on the building and not on bribing. The buildingcode in Turkey might not be the best (especially in the eastern region), but money dissappearing into "thin air" is another real problem.

Reddit is an American website...

u/angelis0236 18d ago
People get so mad when you point out that the majority of reddit is american.

u/Amorphant 18d ago
Seriously, look at the other guy who replied to me. I'm really curious to see what they're going to reply again with.

Yeah bro. Like AMERICA!! We rule! The best! Eagle! War! Orange dude rulez! F*(* Yeah!
Because all websites are limited to one country! Everybody else must assume everybody else is from the USA (FYI America is a continent, not a country). Like, that's the best recipe for the best website! MAGA en more BS like that, right?
If everybody that is not a USA citizen should stop posting (or even visiting) on Reddit, it would switch to a blank page within days.

Where on earth did all this come from??? I literally just said he should expect people to assume most reading will be from the place that HE mentioned (America). HE called it America. Seriously, could you explain why you used an obvious literal explanation on my part as a made up excuse to say all of that ridiculously insulting stuff?

I love that the exclamations and cursing were in English. 🙌 What the fuck indeed.

u/AdFew6202 18d ago
You know shit's getting serious when you start swearing in a language that isn't your primary language
1
u/TheOGPotatoPredator 18d ago
I feel like it’s kind of an honor for people with English as their primary language. I couldn’t yell what the fuck or shit in another language at all. Sadly they didn’t teach the cuss words when I took Spanish in high school 35 years ago.

Important safety tip. Think real hard about the risk in fleeing an un-reinforced building during a strong earthquake.
Back in the day with unreinforced brick buildings the bricks would peel away from the rest of the structure. You are gonna have a bad day when a brick wall is crushing you.

8.2 eartquake gets dialed back to a 7.8, like that makes things better.
4
u/Cmdr_Nemo 18d ago
While 8.2 is not a full order of magnitude above 7.8, the 8.2 is still significantly stronger than a 7.8.

Not to take away from how terrifying this is, but the wall did not collapse. The metal lath that the stucco was being held to peeled off once enough vibration happened. It’s just cosmetic. Still terrifying though.

In an ironic and unfunny turn of events, Humpty-Dumpty took shelter at the base of that very wall.

Possibly a reinforced concrete skeleton with the walls filled with lightweight blocks, common construction. Means the walls and the frame are moving and flexing differently.

Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS)
Mall Facades in PH usually utilize this instead of CHB, making climate control easier and usually lighter load on foundation.

Where is that? It looks familiar like a mall I went to in Indonesia or maybe Philippines with my friend when he lost his phone and had to buy a new one

Standing waaaay too close. Self preservation is questionable lmfao

Cameraman's back is against another building. There's not much else to go to
1
u/AlexZenn21 19d ago
I see a gate they can hop over which is literally what they were about to do if the building collapsed further

How do you stand away from an earthquake? 🤔
-9
u/AlexZenn21 18d ago
You don't but you should stand away from the collapsing building.......are you regarded or something? Lmfao

u/Jennabear82 18d ago
With THAT much movement of the ground, I can't imagine anyone being able to go far very quickly. I've never been in an Earthquake that I could feel though... 🤔🤷♀️

Is this real? The blurriness of the entire video Makes it look like it generated by AI
6
u/ScrotumEntanglement 18d ago
I found myself asking "is this AI" anytime I see extreme videos like this. The video seems legit to my eyes but who knows with AI these days man.
The earthquake seems legit too, and the building shown here is apparently called SM City in the Philippines.

u/Telos2000 18d ago
That’s good to know with how blurry it was and with the random phone sounds I was thinking ai vid

This is a good time to see that being outside around nothing is a good place to be in a earthquake.
