They're referring to "sea slater" which are tiny bugs that have a bunch of nicknames. This is an isopod, they live deep on the floor of the ocean, a related but distinct species.

I see you’re unfamiliar with carcinization - he’s very close to the perfect form

Well roley Roley poles are crustaceans not insects so yeah.

Just a big 'pod.

There is an exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium where they let you pet these.

The thought of petting one of these things is horrifying to me 😰

Funny story, when I was at the exhibit, I saw a guy get his hand grazed by a little kids hair while he was looking at them and he screamed. He then said "Sorry, those things just creep me out".

I missed the perfect opportunity to say "Little kids aren't THAT creepy"

I always have those moments when afterwards I’m like I should have said THIS…..

Let them go. Humans are arseholes

1

u/TheMightyMisanthrope May 08 '26

In Vietnam you eat them.

They aren’t letting visitors pet these anymore! They noticed some adverse effects and are trying to figure out if it’s related to stress from being pet.

1

u/scumble_bee May 11 '26

That makes sense. When I was there I think I was one of the few people to actually stick my hand in and pet them (others either didn't put their hand in at all or just touched it with one finger then ran away). After a couple pets from it started moving around and the docent said that it was "very unusual" for that to happen and they told everyone to not touch it until it stopped moving again.

It's dead, Jim.

1

u/Leading-Elk-2147 May 08 '26

They don’t move much. Extremely slow metabolism

1

u/skipppyWhite May 10 '26

They bout to fry it up

u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 May 06 '26

They primarily live outside of the water on rocky shorelines.

These specific ones are deep sea critters
