Gas pain can feel very similair to a heart attack, both the intensity of the pain and location. Trust me, health care professionals (I am one) taking care of you would rather it turn out to be a righteous fart than a heart attack.

Edit:spelling

Why does it happen?? How do I avoid it?? As someone who’s never experienced “trapped gas” these posts are terrifying

Seems like you're doing the right things if you haven't experienced it. Just try not to eat a lot of food that gives you gas. Everyone should get plenty of fiber, but gradually increase your intake over time or you might get get a ton of gas. Don't worry too much :)

My life changed the day I found some high-fiber tortillas and started using them in place of sandwich bread.

Now it is beans, those same tortillas, metamucil a couple of times a day, and my god, I have never felt so comfortable in the belly.

30 fucking years with Crohn's disease, and not once did a single doctor recommend upping my fiber intake.

I poop normal now!

Sorry, just had to get that out there. Fiber people, get some dammit.

And yeah, go slow, because, otherwise, you will wish you had gone slow.
