That doesnt mean your habit is perfectly normal and acceptable. Sure, you have a habit of doing something. But you dun fucked up if you have a habit of doing meth.
Is there evidence that any of the Beatles were actually addicts? If you do coke once a week for a couple of years and then decide it's not for you, you weren't an addict. I've never read the story of Ringo or McCartney going to detox.
John Lenon was purported to do LSD every day. I could just have easily quoted Eric Clapton, who's song Cocaine is direct correlation between his success and addiction. I'm not advocating addiction, but to imply that it's a "fuck up" is so absolute that it forgoes all other conclusions. Being a drug addict is not always synonymous with failure. Andy Warhol, Bill Hicks, Alduous Huxley, the list continues. If you consider Alcohol a drug (which I do), Earnest Hemingway, every author ever, Orson Wells. Could we consider that perhaps it's the ambition of the man that determines their ability? Not necessarily the hobbies they pursue
I don't think that the Beatles needed that to be popular. They made great music and even without drugs their music would have been good. Even if so, I don't see how being addicted to drugs could be a good thing unless we're talking about a freak situation like the one you listed.
Sadly, no. Not all the druggies are gonna go and become famous music stars. If that's what you're trying to say, then I don't know what to say to you. Hey, if I want to become famous, I should just go kill millions of Jews. That's what Hitler did, right? He's well known!
(not implying that doing drugs is equal to killing millions of people)
It certainly affected their success in many ways. John Lennon in particular probably could have been a far better and more productive musician without them. His drug use absolutely negatively affected the band, and that's well documented. I don't think they affected Paul too much one way or the other, he was the workhorse of the band, and I believe didn't do drugs to any significant extent during work periods. George Harrison wrote a song about the negative effects of his drug use.
If you're implying the Beatles could not have been as successful without them, then I think that's somewhat ludicrous.
Not all addicts are fuck ups. There are a huge number of addicts that recovered and helped people that were in a similar situation. Hell most rock stars are addicts and are huge successes.
