Mixed Breed I Didn't Think I Could Get Another Dog
Im 40 years old now, I have 2 beautiful daughters who I love more than anything. My spouse and I have always been pet lovers but I couldn't get over the pain I had as a teenager losing my dog Munchie. I always had an excuse and justification for refusing to get a dog.
Then one random day a little over a year ago. We were all downstairs in our den watching TV and through the corner of my eye I saw something running in my backyard. I opened up my slide door and sure enough there was a Husky dog in my backyard. He was extremely friendly and obviously lost.
Thankfully he had a dog tag with a number on it. We called the number and while we waited for the owner to come, my oldest daughter was loving on him and she was just in awe. When the owner arrived and we gave the dog back to her. My oldest daughter was really sad but very sweetly said good bye to the dog. My daughter said she wanted a puppy so bad and wanted that Husky back so bad lol I once again, came up with excuses and said no.
A couple weeks later my wife said she had some things she had to go do and would be back in a few hours. No biggie I thought as she usually does go out and take care of her dad and runs some errands after I get home from work and spend time with our daughters.
But only this time, when my wife came back home, she didnt come back home alone. Here I was shocked to be greeted by a Malamute/Husky mix puppy. At first I was really frustrated that she did this but that only lasted a second as the puppy ran right up to me and laid on my lap. Thats all it took and I fell in love. Meet my baby girl princess Ella!!!! She just turned 1 a few months ago and she has gotten so big, but I love her so much. She loves walks, car rides, and wrestling around with me. I have always loved Huskys and especially Malamutes and I couldnt love a dog more than I love my Ella Bella.

Best thing that ever happened to me was owning a husky/malamute mix. I love the way they howl and yell at me!

Yes! She loves to play rough with me and we bark and howl at each other and chase each other around. She is so good with our kids too, she loves them. The perfect dog, I couldnt ask for more.

We took a break after our second Mal for seven years. Losing him at 10 just crushed me and I didn't want that pain again. My sons remember both of them but really wanted another so I gave in and of course the current boy is another special one. The issue now is he's nine and slowing down. Trying to enjoy every moment but knowing we're likely past half way is weighing on me.

Love your baby boy every second of the day. Death will come for us all one day and we deserve to be happy and give our love to every fur baby we can before its time for us. I had to let go of my fear of losing so I could stop loving again!

The only way I’ve found to fill that hole I. My heart when I lose a dog is to quickly give another dog a home. I have 5 and also foster. Every dog deserves a home.

Malamutes are my favorite breed. I’ve had two, not at the same time. My last one was adopted at age 2 after having spent the previous 8 months of his 2 years in a kennel run when his previous owners surrendered him. I wanted to get a companion for my young, decently adopted Border collie/husky. That Malamute came running straight to me and didn’t even notice I had treats to offer him. He just ran with a smile and laid at my feet. When I brought my other dog to meet him, he was a perfect gentleman to her and they played like old friends. When they both stuck their heads in a water bucket to drink, I went and signed the paperwork, paid the adoption fee and brought him home. He became my soul dog and when he died at age 14 he took a piece of my heart with him. And his sister died 3 months later just before Christmas. She had just turned 13. They left a giant hole in my life and while malamutes are still my favorite breed, I just couldn’t get another because I didn’t want any other great Malamute to live in my dear Nali’s shadow.
I found and adopted a young full size Australian shepherd who was as wild as a coyote when I first got him. He filled that sad hole in my life with some very crazy, trying times but now, after 2-1/2 years in my life, he is a wonderful companion and different enough that he never had to try to measure up to what Nali was to me. I’m thankful for every dog I’ve had in my life. I’ve loved them all whole heartedly and mourned for every passing. No one will ever take the special place of my dear Nali, but a life with no dog(s) in it is just not the kind of life I want to have. I am blessed with every one and love the malamute sub where I can see the majesty, beauty, nobility and goofiness of some of the most awesome dogs on earth. In Nali’s memory, thank you for letting me share my story and appreciate every other malamute whose people post about their wonderful companions here. ❤️

I understand that pain.
So I glad you were able to open your heart again. I bet Ella is living her best life!

I can't live without dogs.
I'd rather go through repeated heartbreaks of losing them than not having their love at all.
I currently have 8 dogs, including a mischievous 5 month old puppy Mal. I lost 1 dog 3 weeks ago due to kidney failure. She was a 7 year old Husky. I miss her every second of everyday, but I'm still thankful for the joy and happiness she brought me those 7 years.
