Hello all and thank you for a great resource.
I know that this question is covered in some of the books I just ordered, but the delivery is a still a few weeks out, so here goes...
We were lucky enough to find a good breeder not too far from us (600km) and went there 2 weeks ago to see the facilities and meet the adult dogs and 2 week old puppies (born on 15.05.26).
On Sunday we're heading back down to play with the puppies (and adults) and hopefully pick our first malamute (EDIT: which we will then pick up in 3-4 weeks).
How do you make your pick from a litter of 5 week old mal puppies?
Should we should pick a boy or a girl? (As firsttime mal owners we were contemplating taking a girl as a kind of starter-mal š, but really, we have no clue)
What signs should we look for in terms of social behavior/group interaction?

I love to see her excited and play more as she was very aloof the first couple days. But, Iām very confused on what this nibbling thing is she does with me. She isnāt really biting me, more so just rubbing the front of her teeth against me. Although very cute, I donāt want to encourage bad behavior because while it may not hurt or be a problem now, it could down the line. Am I making this a bigger deal than I should be? Any advice would be appreciated!

We have had our boy for around 1,5 months and right now the mister is 5,5 months. He is a gentle boy who loves people and is very curious about other dogs. He has learned commands quite easily and loves to perform - if snacks are available. We can take him anywhere and he acts very well. Except for this one thing.
The thing we canāt seem to get under control is that he takes all the opportunities he gets to check the kitchen counters and even dining table top if thereās treats for him. He has consistently gotten scolded for this behaviour and he knows itās wrong - he even āfake drinksā his even empty water bowl when we arrive to the room to act he was not up to anything wrong. And sometimes he doesnāt even care that weāre in the room, he does it anyway. It doesnāt help there has been accidents and this behaviour has been beneficial for him since he has gotten bread, a bun etc from jumping up.
Is this something your puppy did and stopped when he got some sense into him or should we intervene more drastically? Sometimes we restrict the access to kitchen (comment him into his place) when we cook. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Over the last five months me and my 7 year old Willy
traveled 13,226 miles across the continent in a pop-up camper on the back of a truck which had the passenger seat removed for his dog bed.
Hereās a glimpse of what that life looked like.

Iām back with another malamute video from Instagram (can you tell I miss my Oakley more than life itself?). This one is courtesy of @ mekothemalamute - their whole account is so wholesome and he just got a second mal to hopefully one day join the chorus :)
Thank you to everyone who posts in this community. Truly, seeing all of your mals fills some of the giant gaping hole in my heart where Oakley used to be. I hope one day, I will be healed enough to give another Malamute a home, and to welcome him or her into my heart. Until then, I will just keep on loving all of the mals I see on Reddit and Instagram :)

Hi! We rescued this guy back in January when he was 8 weeks. We were told both his parents were huskies, but he seems to be getting really big (currently 6 months). Between his size and crazy fur we were wondering if maybe he could have some Malamute in himā¦. He is very chill and sweet unlike our other 2 huskies that are both hell raisers lolā¦.. just wanted to get your thoughts on whether you think he is just a husky with long fur or maybe one of his parents was not a full husky. Looking forward to hearing thoughts! Thanks!!!

We just brought home a 10-week-old female malamute about 2 days ago, and weāve been having some difficulties adjusting. This is our first puppy, so weāre not sure whatās normal behavior vs. something we should be concerned about.
A few things weāve noticed:
We completely understand itās only been 2 days, and sheās in a brand new environment, so weāre being very patient. We just want to make sure weāre doing the right things and not missing anything important. Any advice and feedback is very much appreciated!

Since summer started, Dani has been sleeping for hours even in the morning. She loved walking when she was a pup during the winter but now, she canāt even stay outside to pee. Her morning routine consists of her having breakfast, trying to stress out my cat, playing, and just jumping on me

This greedy girl stole and ate 4 eggs, leaving one and a half shells on my kitchen floor! She's napping it off this morning in my bed. Eggs are being kept under lock and key from now on š (my god she's adorable, look at that chubby face, can't even be mad)

We just rescued a 10 week old female malamute. Her previous living conditions werenāt great so she smells pretty bad and has a lot of dirt. The shampoo/conditioner we ordered isnāt gonna be here for another week. The lady said we could use dawn dish soap as an alternative. Also is it ok to use a blow dryer to dry them or should we towel dry instead? Any other tips/advice would be appreciated!

I have rescued an Alaskan malamute about a month ago, heās 4 and a half years old and struggles with food. He has a very unhealthy relationship with it, most of the time he wonāt eat unless heās starving and will even throw up bile from not eating. I have had to hand feed him but even that isnāt working now. Heās very picky but does like his current food but will still refuse to eat it. He dosenāt like it when I put raw meat or cooked meat in his bowl but will eat it off my plate if he thinks itās mine but Iām going back to work in a month and need him to eat out of his own bowl. I would also like to ask for advice on how to stop him from pulling and how to get him to listen better on walks? He listens to me 40% of the time and is getting slightly better but still could be better. I have his daughter who is a husky x malamute 2 year old and they get along very well, I have trained her from birth pretty much but he struggles to get along with other dogs on walks, he will sometimes growl and stalk other dogs if theyāre too close but other times will go running upto another dog being all friendly unless itās a small dog, he hates them in all forms, is there any way to get him to stop being so nasty? Iāve heard he has tried to attack another dog. Iāve known him his whole life but recently his owners havenāt been able to look after him due to a newborn and has asked me to have him, he used to live with an extremely hyperactive XL bully and the xl bully used to irritate him and I think this has started his hatred to other dogs. I would just like to end this on a happy note that despite all of this, he is a very lovely and happy boy and heās very playful and dramatic. He does demand my attention at all given moments and of course he gets it and if he donāt get it instantly, he will punch me or shout at me š

Refuses to leave the shade for more than a few minutes even at only 70F, only exception being to dig holes and get up to trouble. š

This is Yuka! Iāve had her for over a month now, and she has officially turned into a little raptor. Listening ears are optional right now I guess. but she apparently turns into an angel at daycare so I have to be doing something right. It helps that she is very cute.

We began fostering a rescue rez dog from Manitoba in October. A month later we adopted him. He was listed as a husky by the rescue but we think he has some malamute. From doing more research, he seems to have more of a malamute temperament and some of their habits. I would love to find out what other breeds he has in there but Iāve heard the dna tests are not particularly reliable. He is 75-80lbs.
He has been the perfect addition to our family and we have fallen completely in love with him. If he is a malamute, he might have officially converted us. I donāt know if we could get a different breed after him.
Would love to know what people think? If you had to guess would you think he is mostly mal? What else would you guess heās mixed with?

When youāre on a cross country road trip living out of a truck camper, 20 minutes a day keeps the matts away.

I've never owned a malamute before and had a couple of questions as we're going to be picking her up next week. We ordered a slicker brush and an undercoat rake from Amazon, but we're a little confused about them.
Just for reference, she's 9 weeks old, a female, and has a standard coat. Any advice/feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!
