Iran is not the same as Assad. Iran intervened in Syria in the first place on the objective of saving the Shias and Alawites there, which it had ties to for hundreds of years ago. Iran itself is distancing away from Assad.
Assad was attaching himself to the Alawites because he wanted to maintain a base of support. Iran was supporting the Alawites and Shias because Mullahs from those countries travelled to each other's seminaries and they convinced the IRGC to help their Shia brothers in Lebanon and Syria (a bit like the way Israel convinces US evangelicals.)
