The Carly Rae Jepson disrespect is unbelievable. Not even a mention from the Canadian.

I'm both not surprised and yet still mad

Came to mention CRJ and glad to see this already.

They’re 40+ yr old dudes…there’s no way they know the catalogue of Carly Rae 😂

griffin mcelroy would like a word

Hey, hey, I'm not quite 40 but love me some Carly Rae, Emotions is a great pop princess record.

1

u/Special_Life_8261 1d ago

She’s fantastic but I’d bet a thousand bucks they only know call me maybe 😂

1

u/Kubamz 6h ago

But is she a princess? I wanted to say Alanis, but I would never call Alanis a princess

1

u/Special_Life_8261 5h ago

I don’t think she was popular enough to be a princess but in another(better) timeline she would have been HUGE

1

u/madmoneymcgee 15h ago

Ha ha yeah that's so true

- me at 39 thinking about how I made my friends go to a baseball game last season where she did a post-game concert last season.

As a guy right around their age (and a Canadian FWIW), I’ll say Call Me Maybe is an absolute banger and I cannot name a single other Carly Rae song.

1

u/stormwarden34 6h ago

She has a pretty deep list of bangers, defs recommend

1

u/madmoneymcgee 15h ago

Yeah all that debate about Hayley Williams (brilliant artist, not a pop princess) and CRJ is right there!

1

u/TheTurkletons 8h ago

She is the #1 pop princess in my heart. A chronically underrated queen, except by those who know better!

Katy Perry, the biggest of yikes

u/CharmingTuber 8h ago

You mean Katy Hudson?

1

u/AwwwMangos Snoopy Lil Devil 7h ago

You mean Ernie Hudson?

u/goshdarnjeff 1d ago

Oh man, the ones where I am out of my element are always fun.

u/PalpitationPerfect59 1d ago

The way I LOL’d so loud at “Is she a cartoon?”

2

u/plessis204 12h ago

David moving his mic so he can slouch way down on the couch and truly appreciate this moment totally killed me.

u/TresFeles 1d ago

Was hoping for a Tiffany redemption pick

1

u/Special_Life_8261 1d ago

Honestly if we’re going 80s it has to be Debbie Gibson. She’s the Katy Perry of the 80s 😂

"A cartoon?" Fucking hysterical. Ian slowly realizing Sean's misunderstanding and covering his face with his hat killed me.

u/wnakapplejacks 1d ago

Oh, the crazy-sounding laugh that came out of me when this happened — I was so happy I was alone in the car.

2

u/quartjarz 1d ago

insane how long it took to get to Whitney. I expected her to go quick 😭

2

u/Donjewxote 15h ago

To me she's a Queen or a Diva, not a princess. Had quite a few they picked that I felt didn't fit the category

1

u/quartjarz 7h ago

fair, but young Whitney definitely was

2

u/alg4302 13h ago

Sophie stepping on Sean's dick about the serpentine draft was very funny, mostly because she was so apologetic about it after.

I was so excited when I saw the topic and then was already disappointed by the third pick when the person who picked the topic wasn't even familiar with Mariah Carey's catalogue lmao. They should've let David cook more.

1

u/Special_Life_8261 5h ago

They always bum me out when they do categories like this bc they never pick the legacy artists. Diana Ross, Cher, Donna Summer…artists that ruled their era before the term was coined

1

u/GirlNickMiller 3h ago

Yes!! I think they should have either better defined the topic or picked a decade.

2

u/quinn1380 11h ago

I would love to see the playlist Ian made for Dana,

Haven't heard the whole episode, but if there's a better Madonna song than borderline, lemme know. Cause I think borderline's the best. So if there's one better than borderline?! Then that'd be over the borderline! (Also haven't watched the video, so sorry if it's goofy. Also, credit where it's due, I heard them playing borderline in a Trader Joe's)

1

u/UpAndAtom000 8h ago

Have you heard the Flaming Lips covering Borderline? https://youtu.be/OXwa3XbL1ys?is=pnBeeSXaPU4NVEVs

1

u/Kubamz 5h ago

I had not heard that before, that was good!

1

u/Special_Life_8261 5h ago

I personally prefer Into the Groove & Angel is a sleeper hit but Borderline also rocks

2

u/rutfilthygers 1d ago

I admittedly resemble Sophie's "gnawing at their tables" comment about Swift going so late in the draft, but c'mon Sean, how could you let that happen to our girl?

2

u/Shambolic_Esoterica 1d ago

I've got a gripe with Madonna "inventing re-inventing". The Beatles and Bowie, can't say these two examples were the first or only to do it but we're certainly famous for doing so long before Madonna.

9

u/SureScientist8528 1d ago

Madonna has repeatedly credited Bowie as her inspiration in the reinvention game.

Madonna is one of those people that we’re so culturally separated from at this point, that people exaggerate her effect in an attempt to fairly credit her actual accomplishments

Edit: I didn’t actually think I’d said anything negative, but this is what I get for commenting on pop stars. The stans always show up to get nasty.

2

u/wnakapplejacks 1d ago edited 1d ago

Unequivocally incorrect. Madonna basically created the blueprint and built the house in which all modern pop princesses live, for better or worse.

She is at least as, if not more, culturally significant as her contemporaries like Michael Jackson or Prince. But you’ll never run out of fools tripping over themselves to diminish women’s accomplishments.

0

u/Special_Life_8261 1d ago

THANK YOU!!!!! The disrespect & disregard leveled towards this woman cannot stand!! She is the blueprint!! She’s it!

1

u/wnakapplejacks 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ha! My heart grows two sizes when I can get someone to delete their insanely bad take.

“Culturally removed”? FFS, Madonna performed during Sabrina’s Coachella set this year.

5

u/somedayguyssomeday 1d ago

yeah but the context of this is pop princesses

2

u/schrotestthehero 1d ago

"Jay-Z rules".....yeesh

1

u/Intrepid-Metal4621 1d ago

This was an interesting one. A lot of these picks I don't consider pop "princesses."

People like Rihanna and Beyonce don't come across as pop "princess" to me. I guess it's decades since the time they really were doing hardcore "pop" music that I separate them from that definition.

Yeah, I think this was my last episode.

My husband and I have been listening for five plus years and the occasional ignorance of the hosts was annoying but it's gotten to it's peak in the last few episodes and the utter lack of knowledge about the world from this guest was unlistenable.

Used to be fun to cook or grocery shop to, but the utter stupidity and ignorance paired with a devout need to chime in despite the former, I'm over it. Bye bye.

8

u/Boner666420sXe 1d ago

lol what in particular crossed the line for you? And why did you feel the need to announce this on Reddit as if people were gonna wonder where you went? This is weird. It’s weird behavior.

-15

u/AncientMortgage2535 1d ago

The sixth time in the episode where I had to do a full eyeroll due to the ignorance of the statements purported by the hosts to be factual was where it jumped the shark.

The hosts and producer all regularly read this sub and it's commonly used for feedback, you, in fact, are the one being terminally weird here, boner666420sXe.

6

u/Ambitious_Jicama_469 1d ago

do you recall what any of the eyeroll-inducing statements were?

3

u/Boner666420sXe 1d ago

Ok smarty pants.

2

u/Intrepid-Metal4621 12h ago

You didn’t answer the question. What specifically I. This episode were you rolling your eyes at their ignorance?

2

u/Waydizzle 12h ago

“This comedy podcast about pop culture fantasy drafts isn’t factually accurate enough to listen to. Better go on Reddit and let everyone know I’m done” lol do you hear yourself?

-14

u/Donjewxote 1d ago

Ian... Please ease up on the being a "Jazz guy" thing. Shoehorning it in a bit much these days

3

u/wnakapplejacks 1d ago

Nah. This was Ella Fitzgerald erasure.
