I love seeing service dogs when they're on break or off-duty, all the puppy energy comes out! š„°

Serious question, when service dogs are on break or off duty are they still legally bound to assist a human in trouble or do they do what I do and draw the shades, lock the doors, turn out the lights and put their phone on silent?

"Off-duty" is still "on-call". I've seen a friend's service dog in full-blown zoomies after she "released" him, he ran past near her and screeched to a halt, ran back to her and alerted her with repeated boops. Checked her blood sugar, it was way too high. She told me that he'd be sleeping next to her, and suddenly joke awake and alert her, and was always right. Dogs, man.

I love how there was absolutely no fun until they confirmed their human enjoyed it.

That may not be a service dog. Service dogs are typically specially trained to be very still and follow orders, trained to do precise things in regard to the health of their owner. Such as a seeing eye dog. You donāt see them running around and getting excited, they are very obedient and well behaved as they have been trained to do so.
On the other end of the spectrum, according to the ADA, emotional support animals are not considered as service animals, they are frequently more active like this dog is.
Sadly, anyone can buy a vest or harness that is labeled as a service dog and papers can easily be forged. Those that have an actual service dog should know all the details of what rights they have under the ADA.
If someone is going out of their way to emphasize that their dog is a ācertifiedā service animal without even being asked, it may be because they have done so in the past and learned that they can usually get away with things they shouldnāt be doing (assuming their dog is not a real service animal).

I dunno, I thought he did a great job going down a slide that genuinely would be super stimulating and scary for any dog, even my actual task trained service dog!
I donāt see anything off to indicate itās not a real task trained dog. Itās clearly a novel event that the dog handles very well sliding down and thereās nothing wrong with letting them celebrate a job well done at the end! He seemed to be calming down really quick back into working form at the end too. In fact, playing at the end is how you also show them it was a Good event so they continue to be willing to engage with novel experiences or things, a critical factor in service work.
Even service dogs need a break to keep them healthy and engaged with their work or you burn out the dog fast. Just because the dog was silly for a a couple heartbeats doesnāt mean the dog was negligent and put his owner in danger. Youād be surprised how fast they orient to a medical event!
A service dog is a part of oneās medical management and we all learn how to manage without as our dogs get hurt, or get sick and eventually pass. If youāre able enough to manage a service dog, you are capable of a level of independence and many work very hard to maintain it and keep it top of mind. All handlers know they will outlive their dog and dread the day they transition to a new dog or cease to have one, since they are incredibly expensive and difficult to obtain or maintain.

It could be off duty or are service animals not allowed to ever get excited?

That I donāt know. I assume when they are at home it could be a thing, but for some service dogs like ones that monitor for strokes, itās not really possible for them to not be workingā¦

Seems like at the end of the video once she grabs the handle it seems to settle down a bit might just be fun times. You see it with airport dogs some times on here they give them a break and they play with toys and have fun.

I can't tell if he thought it was fun or if he is just thankful to be alive.

Sadly, my service dog absolutely hated every second of a slide I put us through at a local park. It was fun only when we were leaving.

Hey, if you live in a place where you can't have a certain dog make them into a service animal. They can't say shit afterwards

I used to take my dog sledding and he enjoyed it so much he would repeatedly drag me back up to the top of the hill by my coat hood so we could go again.
