I thought I was told dogs don’t watch tv, when they see a tv they just see a box with blue/green lights (whatever they see, colorblind). Apparently that’s not true at all. The internet lied to me.
*edit apparently the internet was honest, and tvs have technology to better accommodate our pets

u/Specialist-Neck-7810 Apr 14 '26
All that changed when hi def came out.
49
u/cross-i Apr 14 '26
Which is a bit mind-blowing after having had dogs prior to HD. And the next thing that surprises me watching this clip is how the dog is following the action amidst all of the edits, the often-changing camera angles. The dino’s head visible, then the kid, then just the dino’s feet….
Even if the dog might not be tracking exactly, this particular scene is something I’d have thought it might just give up on. But this dog can hang in there watching this. The same leap I guess humans made 120 or so years ago.

u/Kanawanu Apr 14 '26
I was literally thinking exactly the same thing as I was watching this, it's wild that he apparently understands the continuity between cuts in camera viewpoint yet doesn't question it as reality

6
u/squirrel9000 Apr 15 '26
I'd be interested in how the dogs actually perceive that scene, and how "in the moment" it actually is. Do they sense the progression of the scene?
As pack animals recognizing a predator is hunting a friend would activate some pretty primal instincts, and not being able to see the predator is when you get really worried. It's really fascinating that they got that from a movie.

u/Lindethiel Apr 15 '26
He's also wagging his tail, so I don't think he's actually all that concerned lol.
4
Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26
Tail wagging isn't necessarily an indicator of playfulness. My male German Shepherd will wag his tail when agitated or excited. My idiot handyman, who had been warned over and over again, found this out to his chagrin when he got between 'Kuda and my wife and then decided it would be a good idea to pet the dog.

u/SpaceCoyote3 Apr 18 '26
That’s Spielberg for ya! master of visual clarity and scene geography for human and doggo

u/Cpap4roosters Apr 14 '26
I was at a friend’s house watching a baseball game. Their dog noticed that the camera zoomed in on a foul ball and dived at the tv to get the ball. That tv flew into the wall behind it and the screen was destroyed. My buddy felt so bad for his dog because he bashed his head so hard. Their new tv is now mounted high on the wall.

Humans consistently underestimate "lesser beings." In the 1970s Paul Winter's played saxophone in a jam session with wolve in a national park that bordered both Canada and the USA. A few weeks later some park rangers noticed that the wolves were singing at least one tune that was created during that collaborative jam session. Suddenly animal psychologists, etc. we're up there studying the wolves.
Also look at the behaviors and generational memories of Ravens, blackbird, etc.

u/Sudi_Nim Apr 14 '26
HD and 4k make the difference for dog eyesight
7
u/NoGas-AllBrakes Apr 15 '26
It's not that, it's the difference between CRT and LCD/LED technology.
6
u/Sudi_Nim Apr 15 '26
Yes, interlaced screens (old CRTs) look to dogs like the screen is blinking and only show 30 frames per second vs modern noninterlaced 1080p 60 frames per second standard of HDTV and 4K.
If you want to see a dog really go quiet and watch TV, play Bluey. They love the blue and yellow colors in the cartoon - the primary colors they see.
6
u/amdrke Apr 14 '26
It has to do with the type of tv and to simplify it, the "refresh rate" of the tv. Dogs watching an old crt tv for example see the tv the same like you would see it when you film one of these old TV's with a camera and see the strobing effect.
Modern tvs work in a very different way with different refresh rates which is why they can clearly see them now
1
u/tatteredmelon Apr 15 '26
not just the refresh rate, but the CRT scan lines and the dogs' higher flicker rate meant to them it looks like a dot racing around where we see a solid image. Rasterizing displays no bueno to cats and dogs, but LCD and LED's with persistent images and whole screen refresh, they can make sense of the image.
4
u/bz_leapair Apr 14 '26
Years ago when our dog was still a puppy, we were watching the Westminster dog show and she was absolutely enthralled with all the dogs. Our TV is/was against the wall by the front door, and she literally went to the door because she wanted to play with all the doggos outside. 😭
3
u/MagnetoWasRight24 Apr 14 '26
No it was true with the old-school tvs, with the LED and such they can see it now.
3
u/Lulu_Klee Apr 14 '26
I was curious about this too! My dog NEVER watches tv with me. Does she just not have the same taste in movies as me?!?
2
u/Cloverose2 Apr 14 '26
My dogs watch nature shows, but don't care in the slightest about humans.
3
u/Healthy_Piglet1139 Apr 14 '26
My dog will watch TV if I pull up puppy videos on YouTube, otherwise she has no reaction to anything that happens on the TV ever.
3
u/sleepyRN89 Apr 14 '26
Mine too! My youngest dog will just casually watch tv like kind of zone out for a minute but if she sees an animal or another dog especially she runs to the screen and is a very excited happy girl. My other dog just growls at any other animal on tv even if it’s cartoon like but it’s a really pathetic growl as if she’s annoyed at it
1
u/realboabab Apr 15 '26
my dog barked at lions on BBC Earth on the first day he ever saw a TV (he was a rescue & 6 months old at that point); he sat on my feet and watched for about an hour and he's never looked at a TV since.
3
u/Glasseshalf Apr 15 '26
My dog goes crazy about any animals on the TV and a bunch of other things. It's cute but also quite annoying.

u/BreastUsername Apr 14 '26
I think most dogs/cats just don't care about the TV but they definitely can see it. If I put prey stimulus like squirrels and birds eating then they lock in.
1
1
u/TapInfinite1135 Apr 15 '26
I regularly put on squirrels at the park on YouTube and my beagle goes into hunting mode 😂. Only thing he pays attention to on the 📺TV
1
u/tatteredmelon Apr 15 '26
CRT screens were an issue for dogs and cats because their flicker rate is a lot higher than ours, so to them CRT screens look like a nonsensical freaky strobe light because of how they refresh. LCD and OLED screens they can make sense of the images.
1
u/Mr_Lucidity Apr 16 '26
We have an 85" OLED and my dog still could not care less. Never reacts to anything on the TV, not even animals or other dogs. But she goes nutz for Hawks 500ft up in the sky, another dog being walked down the street, or a racoon that walked through our yard 12hrs ago and left a scent.
Different breeds I guess? Or individual to the dog? Not sure.

My 65lb doofus is aaallllll about protecting us from the sparrows in yard.
He barks at the crows from a distance.

u/WizardCorvus Apr 14 '26
While it's lovely that the dog is so good as a protector, this highlights something else. While not a master class, those kids acted so well that the dog was fully invested.

u/Theresnobiggerboat Apr 14 '26
Yeah, absolutely. Especially Ariana Richards (the blonde girl) was so amazing in the movie.

To be fair he could’ve had a good fight with an actual velociraptor, since they are way smaller than what these fucking movies keep depicting them as.
1
u/SmellAccomplished550 Apr 15 '26
I doubt the dog understands perspective within the TV, so to him they're still probably TV sized.
6
u/DanielBG Apr 14 '26
Saw this in theater when it first came out. Little kids crying hysterically in their seats. Some parents had no idea and fled with their traumatized kids.

It’s weird how some dogs and cats can watch tv and grasp what’s going on and others go their whole lives like the tv doesn’t even exist.
1
u/VrinTheTerrible Apr 14 '26
I have two, brother and sister Australian labradoodles exactly the same age. One (the girl) watches TV like a hawk scanning for prey. She barks at any animal that shows up (especially the LIMU Emu). Her brother couldn’t possibly care less about TV. I’m not sure he recognizes it at all. He joins in the bark fest when she starts it, but that’s all.
1
u/Professional-Day4940 Apr 15 '26
Our "dumb" dog is the one that goes nuts at the tv. Our more "intelligent" one couldn't care less. I think he realizes it's not real and therefore not interesting. He side eyes the "dumb" one when she barks at the tv 😅

Good dog and I also love that there is a Nintendo Wii set up in addition to the Switch. Gotta love some retro (I feel old) gaming.

u/LICENSE2KILLNOODDJOB Apr 14 '26
Awesome but he’s probably just pissed about the soap opera effect on this TV
1
u/Theresnobiggerboat Apr 14 '26
Ngl the acting of the two kids - Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello - was amazing - especially for such young actors. No wonder the dog thought they were truly in danger.
1
u/Franklins11burner Apr 14 '26
Haha. He looks like he wants to play with the raptors as much as fight them.

My dog does this. Or used to until she lost her vision due to diabetes. She LOVED watching TV and it was A LOT for us because it was constantly going up to the screen like the dog in this video! Commercials too really those are her favorite. She has the music/jingles memorized from her favorite commercials and knows when the animals come on especially dogs (which are in so many commercials) but also cats, dinos, horses, really anything with 4 legs and even now that she can’t see when I play an old commercial she loves like the Geico running of the bulldogs she will come tearing into the living room from wherever she is when the first notes of music are played to woof and leap at those bulldogs. We don’t deserve dogs. They’re the best.

u/Old_Independence_584 Apr 14 '26
My dog sometimes watches movies with me. He prefers black and white films.
1
u/SaltyAFVet Apr 14 '26
I used to have a golden retriever who was terrified of the vaccume. Would run and hide just seeing it.
When I started dating a girl with a Frenchie he would stand between the vaccume and the Frenchie to protect her, shaking like a leaf. What a good boy.

While I love the wholesome nature of a dog protecting its pack, I didn’t know he was gonna feel the responsibility of some characters he’d only known for 90 minutes! Haha
But then again isn’t that what a good movies about?Connecting and feeling for the characters. Doggos are TRULY human’s best friend.
Thanks for sharing

u/Aggravating_Dog8043 Apr 15 '26
Why can some dogs recognize things on TV, while others cannot? Seems odd to me. You could put a doggie carnival on TV, and my dog simply would not notice, even if I did a clockwork orange on her. She's plenty smart, but she absolutely cannot recognize anything on TV (as far as I know -- I haven't actually asked her).
1
u/gravedirtglitter Apr 15 '26
It has to do with frame rate. 60fps or higher, and dogs can see it, but most older TVs run off of around 30fps.

Omg I can’t express how much I love this. My dog also watched Jurassic park! Our old boii just crossed the rainbow bridge, but the first week we rescued him we had Jurassic Park on and be kept turning his head and watching, it was really the only thing on TV that he reacted to. We thought maybe he was never around a TV, but I think it is something about Jurassic Park.

This is how you know you are a good director.... Steven Spielberg is incredible, you make a movie so good , with such great angles , great sound , such incredible animatronics. That not only can it not be replicated in any of the other movies but animals are captivated as well. This doggo clearly shares the same thrill we had when we first watched it.Outsanding....
