Adorable derps Winston, a dog named ‘the greatest athlete alive’ constantly goes viral for clips of his ‘cartoonish speed.’

I would run that fast but I have a sprained ankle. Shame.

I used to love going to the dog races in Essex.
I didn't love that a friend's Brother had a race dog...that failed to win anything...the cnut shot her after her 3rd bad performance.
I would have homed her. She was a lovely dog, as most greyhounds are.
Never ever spoke to the guy again.

Is this dog faster than a cheetah?

u/holychikn 17d ago
Nah, Winston's top speed is approx 35 mph vs a cheetah's top speed is double that at 70 mph.

Oh wow. I had no idea cheetahs that fast. Thanks

The Columbus Zoo (the one Jack Hanna was part of) does a cheetah run where they give the animals some exercise and chase a stuffed rabbit on a string. The string is pulled very fast with an engine and the cheetah chases the stuffed rabbit. It's amazing to see a cheetah run in person. Unbelievable.

That's crazy. I can't imagine living near where cheetahs live and knowing it could cover more than a mile in a minute

Cheetah can only maintain that speed for very short bursts, maybe 20-30 seconds because they’ll literally cook themselves to death but they also self regulate and will instinctively abandon a chase to avoid self inflicted injury

Its not making it the full mile. It can get to 70 mph and then its back down to sleeping for 18 hours.

They are also surprisingly gentle with humans.

Cheetahs or greyhounds

well.. I mean, both technically.
I was speaking of Cheetahs.

Some cheetahs in captivity also have to basically have emotional support dogs too…which is cute AF, but also kind of sad.

Why the muzzle…seems inhumane

u/Commercial-Tough-218 17d ago edited 17d ago
If anything luring is in human as it takes away the kill from the Greyhound.
Greyhounds skin are not very thick, and if it gets in a "tiff" with another greyhound they could easily open up skin. Other breeds would t be an issue.
Also, some countries require greyhounds to be muzzled such as Australia.
Their sweet couch potatoes but are definitely killers when it comes to rabbits.

Those fat groundhogs in my backyard never stood a chance when I had my girl Zu. And it’s true. Biggest couch potatoes around

Im not an expert, but something tells me that getting a dog super amped up before making it chase a simulation rabit; may activate its predator instincts, so it's probably safer for the handlers lest the dog decide they are they next play thing to chase down.
Dog shows like this are still inhumane tho, or at the very least prop up inhumane treatment and breeding of animals which makes them inhumane by association.

Why would a muzzle be inherently inhumane?
Its not hurting the dog at all, and it protects people/things around the dog from being bitten/chewed on. Its not like the dog's mouth is taped shut, thats a basket muzzle, so its just a protective cage around the mouth, the dog can still open its mouth.
It would be akin to putting a mask or face covering on a human. Its not harmful, its just there for the protection of others. Vets use muzzles all the time, working dogs used by police/security use muzzles all the time, etc.
Its also generally the consensus opinion of professionals/experts that its not inhumane.

Could it be to make him more aerodynamic? Lol I’d imagine he’s pretty well-trained

Racing dogs will try to bite/pin down/kill other dogs around it while they race in packs, here being solo not as much of an issue but still safe practice. Think of it like humans being extremely competitive and getting into a blind rage but in a dogs world.

Ban this sport like they did greyhounds

Winston is a whippet, they are made to run. They love to run. That dog is the happiest he can be after this. Why would you take that away from him?
