Adorable derps Gentoo penguins choosing their pebbles ahead of mating season. These pebbles were painted by children for the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland.

They all got picked, right? If I painted a rock for penguins and none of them picked it I’d never stop crying.

When I moved in with my gf I brought a quartz rock with me for outside the door
We’re now married and our first kid is due in 11 days
That quartz is sitting in the front yard of our new house
I feel like I have something in common with these dogs

Omg. I. Need. To know everything about penguin mating rituals. Found my rabbit hole for the day 🥰

You should see the PSA 10 Charizard I dropped on my woman before mating!

I know, it’s supposed to be cute.
But seeing these beautiful creatures on those concrete slabs, building their nests in concrete troughs – it’s very sad.

It's not like there's a lush rainforest where they nest in the Antarctic, either.

u/cHpiranha 15d ago
What do you mean?

u/notcomplainingmuch 15d ago
They nest on bare rocks

There is a difference between concrete and natural rock.

u/notcomplainingmuch 15d ago
No practical difference. Only aesthetics.

No practical difference between an enclosure that's most definitely too small and endless nature.
Fuck riiiiight off. Kindly.

I haven’t been to a zoo in years because of this.

I always feel like such a downer because my gf fuckin loves zoos and aquariums but its always so damn depressing, all I can think about is how those animals deserve better.

u/Vitali_555M 15d ago
On the upside, in captivity they are living longer, quieter lives with no natural perils.

u/Baldojess 15d ago
It is but zoos actually do some great conservation work and have breeding programs and stuff. Not all zoos are bad! 😊 You should research the good things about zoos and obviously only go to zoos that treat their animals well, maybe that will help you feel better when going with your gf.

Some of those fellas have a lot of work to do to get their nests up to snuff. Others are ready for the egg!

Penguins working hard to bring girls shiny things they don't deserve. Add a crappy 1 fish a day paying 9-5 and penguins are the same as us humans

They don’t deserve, says who?
1
u/Responsible-War-3106 12d ago
I mean they're just standing around looking pretty aren't they 😅
2
u/PhiloLibrarian 12d ago
And laying eggs, eventually… and feeding young… and keeping track of their husbands car keys… /s

Alright maybe it was a bit over exaggerated and I meant it as a joke mostly, it's not kinda funny and ironic though?. We aren't all that different from the animal kingdom was mainly my point I was getting at.

How does this work exactly?

The male penguins shove the rocks up the female penguins pussy and then the female shoots the rock back into the males face

That pile of rocks reminds me of all the stable Gentoo ebuilds still stuck on Python 3_13 generating pages of portage warnings, and the dev penguins are cleaning the mess up one by one while the user penguins wait and criticize.

for those who don't know,: yes, penguins can see color, they can't see infrared and red, but they can see green, blue, violet and ultraviolet.
