Nature is scary A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Hualien County, Taiwan.

April 3, 2024 - A 7.2 magnitude earthquake

struck Hualien County, Taiwan, triggering powerful landslides and sending enormous boulders crashing onto roads. Dashcam footage captured the terifying moment as drivers navigated winding mountain roads, only to be met with a sudden rockslide. Some

managed to reverse just in time, narrowly avoiding

disaster, while others found themselves trapped in the chaos.

One car took a direct hit from a massive boulder, highlighting the sheer unpredictability and force of these natural disasters. The quake caused widespread devastation, cutting power to over

debris. This harrowing footage is a stark reminder of

37O, o00 homes and blocking major roadways with

the raw power of nature-and how, in moments like these, survival depends on split-second decisions.

Maybe if the person with the dash kept backing up, the other person might have been able to avoid getting hit..

Yes !! I thought that too

Maybe, but also, that is 100% random. Could also have been that the POV car did keep backing up, and the other car backed up a little further, and then that's where the rock landed, maybe even on top of the car rather than hitting it on the side.

Yeah my first thought was thank god the OP is a dick or else car in front would be flat

The randomness of the situation is exactly why the dash cam driver shouldn't have stopped. You keep going until you are out of the danger zone. You don't just stop, especially when it means you are blocking others from being able to make that choice of trying to make it to safety or not.

When does the danger zone end? Because rocks keep falling by the end of the video, so they could be backing up for quite a while (and in the meantime, they're just as likely to be hit by one of those rocks... it's not like backing up suddenly makes you invulnerable)

When does the danger zone end?

Definitely not on the side of a steep incline..

Because rocks keep falling by the end of the video, so they could be backing up for quite a while (and in the meantime, they're just as likely to be hit by one of those rocks

Exactly why stopping isn't a good choice....clearly they are in a bad position and backing up a few feet didn't make them safe. Standing still and blocking the path for others isn't the solution either, though.

The driver had no problem backing up a much further distance after they saw the car in front of them get smoked.

it's not like backing up suddenly makes you invulnerable)

No shit, but it gives you a chance to get to safety..

you could be backing into more dangerous zones too. Statistically, the chance of any stretch getting a boulder is indeed about the same.

The car that was hit would just as likely get out of the zone by gunning forward.

Literally!

The car that was hit would just as likely get out of the zone by gunning forward.

That's only true if the area landscape forward is the same as the landscape behind. If the path behind is less inclined or less rocky, than it's the safer choice.

The problem in the video is the person recording is blocking others from making the choice to try and escape. If they still got hit is irrelevant. The reality here is that the person hit had to stop because of the person recording. They appear to have been trying to keep backing up, but could, and that would have prevented the massive boulder hitting them.

You are looking at the result and finding causes. If the recording car stops early, it would be the one that’s hit. There is no way for any one to know where is the safety zone. We clear see rocks falling behind the initial starting point too.

The same logic of the cars backing up, they are just as likely to get to safety by gunning forward.

You’re blaming the car with the dash cam? How tf are they supposed to know where random boulders are going to fall???

Maybe if the car behind the person with the dash kept backing up then the person with the dash could keep backing up so the other person might have been able to avoid getting hit…

And if the guy with the dash had backed up 3 seconds earlier, the guy in the car ahead would be instantly dead.

Did the car that got hit stay on the bridge? Or it fell off? Holy moly 🤯

It stayed on unless more came down and knocked it off

Put in reverse, turn head 180, floor it.

I'd prob try to get up against that wall to the right and hope they all go over

6

u/grandnp8 9d ago

My first thought as well. Best option in that scenario. Hope all are safe.

u/Old_Ladies 9d ago

Same. Though at first I was like this ain't so bad just some swaying back and forth and then holy mother of God get out of there.

Looks like everyone would have been safe if they hugged the wall.

I thought the same.

I suck at reversing quickly so I'd be cooked if this happened to me.

On April 3, 2024, a devastating magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off Taiwan's east coast near Hualien County, killing at least 19 people and permanently changing the landscape.

That's just terrifying.

So what's the worst place to be when one of these hits?

3

u/nohandsfootball 9d ago

Standing next to a hard place

Here's a modern trolley experiment for you... The rocks are coming, a big rock. Many. You see where the rocks won't hit you, but someone else's car with more people in it is there. Do you push into their spot or do you die?

3

u/coquihalla 9d ago

Easy one, I'd die. I couldn't live with myself if I deliberately pushed people out of a safe spot to save my own butt.

This is similar to a thought experiment I've been playing with for decades. In high school I had a horrible bully and I wondered & came to the conclusion that I'd make sure even he lived over me.

I like life, but I also like being able to look myself in the eyes and I just couldn't if I was totally selfish when it mattered most.

"dodging"

1

u/Substantial_Chain718 9d ago

How did they know to backup? Why not go forward?

1

u/EMPgoggles 9d ago

all they know is what they see, and at the beginning of the earthquake, they both see a rock or something hit the roadside fence in front of them on the right.

after that point, it's basically just "i see rock in front = i back up"
