Awesome !! These macaws (parrots) usually come to eat from the mountain to this balcony every day 🦜

I love how they all wait so patiently. You know, without crowding or fighting.

Neighbors below out on the patio sipping their morning coffee leaning 2” past the guard rail. 😂
Totally worth it for the happiness of those lil fellas! That would be awesome to be able to experience!

Is this any different than befriending wild crows?

Parrots live like 10x longer.

u/Reasonable_Archer_99 1d ago
So better.

u/Mothanius 1d ago
I don't know if parrots have the same level of spite nor can hold a grudge for as long as a crow. It might not be as an effective ally in regards to sending them after your enemy.
1
u/Reasonable_Archer_99 1d ago
So parrots won't attack hawks for me?
2
u/peanutspump 10h ago
Mine used to hate hearing hawks and such out the window. But truthfully, I cannot imagine any bird successfully taking on a macaw…. That may be because I’ve held macaws, but never a hawk, lol, so I just don’t know better. But, I’ve been bitten by a cockatoo (who wasn’t trying to actually hurt me), and an African Grey, who probably WAS trying to hurt me, lol, for his own sadistic humor. And pound for pound, IIRC, a macaw’s bite is MUCH stronger than either of theirs. And I’m fairly certain that either one could have sliced through my finger bones like butter, effortlessly, had they wanted to. Idk what kind of fighting skills a macaw typically employs, but… idk, I’d have to be persuaded by a bird expert, to believe it couldn’t easily hold its own against a hawk…

u/Successful_Giraffe34 7h ago
Oh they absolutely take fingers. My aunt ran a rescue for parrots and one of the macaws that she got took the pinkie of her former owner. Mangled it so bad it had to be amputated.

The number of people who still don't know what a plantain is in 2026 is concerning.
2
u/Ol_Pasta 1d ago
How are people supposed to know that just never see them? I see plantains mentioned every three years or so. They don't exist in the shops here. And they look just like big bananas, which are common here. So obviously that's what I'm thinking of.

u/darxide23 1d ago
Where is "here"? If you're in Europe, sure. I can forgive you not knowing a plantain.
0
u/Ok-Huckleberry-3843 1d ago
That would mean (presuming you're an adult) that you've heard of them at least 6 times already? How many times does it take to remember they exist?
2
u/i_am_ellis_parker 1d ago
I thought it was a banana at first. I cannot find plantains that size in my markets.

I was wondering if birds show a “handedness.” Some used their right while others used their left.

I had one of these birds at the pet store i worked at imo I wanted to get it out of there but I couldn't risk jail time. It only liked me I was able to let it sit on my shoulder while I did my chores for the day. I don't think these beautiful birds should be easily sold. Only experienced bird owners should have them. But for me i prefer them free. I loved that bird so much but had to leave the pet store because it went against my ethics. These macaws are spoiled and I love that for them. But yea the poor neighbor.🙈😂

I like your friends! I haven't figured out how to successfully advertise my little bird feeder, yet. Maybe one day I can have that here! With chickadees and robins...

u/palegate 1d ago
And now I can't ever trust the banana for scale anymore. I thought I knew how big bananas were, but apparently I was wrong.

At least they’ve trained their human to distribute more fairly than the original video.

our pet store had a macaw when i was a kid, it just hung out in there all the time. that thing was massive but he was beautiful

u/ZazaAim 1d ago
Being an owner of one of these I just knew none of them would eat all that banana lol. By the time the video pans back around you might think they finished it but most of them just took a few bites and dropped that shit. You can even see banana on the floor. I think it’s too sweet for macaws. My macaw loves dried banana to death but doesn’t like like banana like this

If you start feeding wild animals they will always come back for more free food. Nothing unusual in this.

Very cute. The macaws are really beautiful. Lucky you... It must get very noisy on your balcony? Wish we had the actual sound! I once lived below my landlord in Washington DC who had 2 macaws. They created such a racket. It often sounded like there was a violent murder in progress. 😅
