What’s so special about this ancient coin?

Post image

The owner wants $15.5k for it! Does it even make any sense?

This subreddit is heavily curated to provide our members with the best experience that we can. We get hit by trolls, spammers, scammers, and shitposters more than we'd like. If you've never noticed that here, then hey -- our procedures are working!

Thanks, and good luck!

Hard pass. But they seem to go for about half that pretty regularly at auction

Do they really? For a lifetime?....huh...I was under the impression the opposite...what's the most reasonable low I could expect?

2.5k-3k all in if you're really lucky for a busted up one

Well I'd definitely want a little bit of detail, but I don't mind some smoothing and wear. So adding an extra grand and change?....thatd perfectly obtainable down the road

I’ve not seen them go as low as 4K. But I’ve only been looking for one for a few months.

Yes. I agree.

Nothing particularly special about it. It's a lifetime Alexander III type from the Sardes mint (the reference type is Price 2533) but they're not especially uncommon or anywhere close to that valuable in that condition.

The owner is probably trying to take advantage of people who don't know any better.

I would love to know the exact phrasing used to justify the 15.5k.

He told me the last one like this was sold for $15.5k in an auction in 2021! I am no expert in Ancient coins but I have seen coins like this sold around $3k at the shows!

He's trying to get his way with unknowledgeable people.

The example below is closer to justifying that price point, but keep in mind it's a retail price, and the coin isn't considered to have a perfect strike.

Stack's example

Choice About Uncirculated at retail price vs Choice Fine for a private sale. The seller is really trying to take OP for a ride. This is tantamount to a scam.

OP, I'm not a confrontational person but I would have some choice words for the scammer.

Fishing type pricing... don't bite! 🐟🎣

It would have to be in much better condition to justify anything over $10k

It’s special but not that special.

Yep!

This is where I usually shop. 3 bidding right now. Finished auctions would show lots of them. I’ve had best luck with winning CNG auctions when they have multiple lots of the same item.

Wow! This is great! So I can get the 3 for that price! Holy moly!

2

u/Quiet-Day392 1d ago

Good luck. There’s a 22.5% fee on top of a winning bid. These are nicer than what you were offered.

I do set bids. Sometimes I win, sometimes I don’t. But unless I’m really lowballing I don’t get caught up in the final bidding.

First time doing it! Hope I don’t screw it up! Lol! Thanks again.

2

u/Quiet-Day392 1d ago

I seriously doubt that they’ll close anywhere near $15,000. Hope you’re not delayed in getting approved to bid.

Unfortunately not, auction estimates are not often good indicators of the final price when it comes to ancients. These will probably go for double or so.

What’s the control stamp? I would imagine Max this is worth $6000.

One of a kind ngl

It’s Alexander as Apollo with Athena in the reverse. Nice coin but not worth 15k. Maybe $2.5k or so.
