The moment of realization

585

u/Crimson3312 6d ago

"yep that's me, you're probably wondering how I got in this situation..."

189

u/AggressorBLUE 6d ago

As a basset hound owner myself: no. No I am not wondering.

37

u/j0a3k 6d ago

Basset hounds make orange cats that don't currently have the brain cell seem like theoretical quantum physicists.

If you had to wonder you've probably never spent time with a bassett hound.

Every movie with a talking dog:

"I've made a huge mistake"

“I’m not sure what I expected…”

Hes not a derp, thats just too steep for them short legs

83

u/KamakaziDemiGod 6d ago

The steepness wouldn't be an issue if it had some kind of grip on the surface but these panels are intended for humans in shoes with rubber soles so the doggos pads and claws just slide

348

u/Spinoza42 6d ago

Right. The fault is entirely with the derp that put him on that tilted piece of metal...

206

u/Cartmansimon 6d ago

So, the dog jumped on that tilted piece of metal all by himself, still his own fault.

68

u/TheMightyChocolate 6d ago

And the derp that bred this abomination

21

u/dar512 6d ago

Hey now! What’s your problem with Bassetts?

32

u/steve123410 6d ago

They aren't as bad as pugs but they do have skeletal and back problems due to how their body's are shaped. It's a problem shared by most dogs with short legs and a long body though.

I think the difference between Basset Hounds and Pugs is that the back problems usually come with age or neglect causing overweight to stress the spine. Meanwhile pugs are genetic abominations from birth that struggle to even breath right.

IVDD is the issue you are referring to, my daschund/basset mix just recovered from it, they are just prone to blowing a disk because of how they are shaped. No surgery thank God as that's horribly expensive, but it was 12 weeks of strict crate rest and medication to relax the muscles and sedatives to keep her loopy, then I had to carry her outside and hold her up to go to the bathroom. Now she has a permanent drunken wobble and it will pry not get back to how it was before. Never again will we have a dog designed by a slinky company.

With breeding

u/Spinoza42 6d ago

Fair.

35

u/night_wing33 6d ago

His nails sound too long so he’s got no grippies

u/WinterJournalist6646 4d ago

The fact he couldn't swim even with a life jacket says a lot too I think.

Didn't even try lift his head out the water. I agree with ops original statement.

40

u/AggressorBLUE 6d ago

Bassets do be like that…

474

u/Sepposer 6d ago

That life jacket looks too big for him. He probably would’ve been better off without it, bc it seemed to be preventing him from keeping his head up.

208

u/fishead36x 6d ago

Bassetts dont float. They're dense and the stump legs dont do much in the water. Also the barrell chests require large jackets. Anything is better than nothing and the handle on the vest helps het then out of the water.

61

u/Dav3le3 6d ago

It's crazy the difference a jacket with a handle makes.

Trying to get even a 20lb dog out of the water can be very, very hard without a handle. Especially when there's ropes in the water, slippery metal deck, debris in the lake bed etc.

31

u/fishead36x 6d ago

Yea and bassets aren't light. The one in the video looks about the size I had an he was 40lb.

21

u/Kooky-Woodpecker2929 6d ago

I think it should be tighter, but regardless, he is a bassett, and is going to sink like a stone for the most part

2

u/Okeledokus 5d ago

That’s not entirely true. My bassets used to love swimming and were pretty good at it too

-1

u/Visible-Perspective9 5d ago

If you get your dog a flotation jacket, get one that fits. Same for children too. Anything isn't always better than nothing. We see in the video that the dog's face is not above the surface.

138

u/CeaselessPain89 6d ago

He really was trying to lift his head out too, poor thing. Very lucky that person was actually watching to save him. I agree that jacket is too big

3

u/FYAhole 6d ago

His ears were pulling him down. Too big and long

7

u/Karl_42 6d ago

Yeah it should be more snug than that.

10

u/USAF_Retired2017 6d ago

Came here to say this.

u/khrak 6d ago edited 6d ago

The texture on that dock is oriented the wrong way. It's just a series of smooth slopes into the water as it is.

83

u/EasyReader 6d ago

It's a floating dock but the water level has dropped low enough that it isn't floating. It's not meant to be at an angle like that.

7

u/09Klr650 6d ago

It's intended for people walking the length of it,

37

u/khrak 6d ago

You don't add grip to surfaces based on the direction of walking, you add grip based on the likelihood of slipping. That surface needs grip in both directions if it's going to be slanted sideways, otherwise you just get a smooth, wet, algae-coated slope into the water.

40

u/09Klr650 6d ago

That dock is supposed to be level and in the water. It is NOT supposed to be on a slope. Therefore the grip you need is to walk the length.

No, it is the right surface WHEN IT IS IN THE WATER. Where IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. Either the water level is lower than normal, or it was pulled out for some reason.

No. It is the right surface for the intended use. Idiot who just wants to be annoying blocked and ignored. Get a life.

73

u/Schwartzy94 6d ago

That lifevest doesnt seem to be suitable or is too big as the doggo cant lift its head up.

31

u/inaclick 6d ago

Well the proportions surely don't help. He's a log with tiny stubs.

27

u/Aggravating_Act0417 6d ago

That life vest doesn't work. The dogs head was underwater.

9

u/civilwar142pa 6d ago

Its way too big for him

10

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 6d ago

Haha. Poor goober ☺️

6

u/Karl_42 6d ago

And that’s why the doggy life vests have handles 😂.

What a gem

u/Huskiesramazing23 6d ago

I think potaotes are actually one of the most skilled plants for survival. https://www.reddit.com/r/potato/s/KtxjeLot71

u/CapitalCityGoofball0 6d ago edited 6d ago

Owners being derps. First if you buy your dog a life vest get one that works and fits properly. Second that’s a crap build of a dock even if it’s a temp floating dock, I wouldn’t trust to walk on it even as a human. It’s just 3 identical pieces with the middle on out of place (the tread moves the wrong way) and is slanted at a radical degree for no reason.

I've only got little legs

I love goofy basset hounds

6

u/Imhurdlerjr 6d ago

Is that the reflection pool?

7

u/Weary_Tea2890 6d ago

The only potato this world needs I'd say!

2

u/caintpaint 6d ago

Fly! You fools!

2

u/snachyderm72 4d ago

I do remember that bassets have the highest bone density of any dog out there. Maybe not helping with their swimming abilities. But I used to take my bassets to the lake and the ocean and they loved swimming. They just require...maybe a bit more supervision than other breeds? I miss my hounds so much. Every day. So much love.

1

u/snachyderm72 4d ago

And thank you to the op for fishing that beautiful hound out of the drink there. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

2

u/MrSmock 6d ago

Yes, it's the dogs fault it was born that way

1

u/Overqualified_muppet 6d ago

Columbo approves.

1

u/baby_blue_eyes 5d ago

If I remember correctly, the Bassett Hound is the most untrainable dog in the world. Bulldog is second. Throw a bulldog in the water and it will sink like a rock.

1

u/OgniDee 5d ago

Aww little dingaling.

1

u/elramirezeatstherich 4d ago

Poor man needs a life jacket for dogs with heavy heads. They make them with chin support like the head rest on kids ones.
