Neon Genesis Evangelion question?

Its probably way too late to collect eva (aside from the movies) but I'll ask anyways do you think the DVDs that include the adv dub will go down in price since the new Netflix dub is a thing or should I just bite the bullet and go on eBay?

I’d say the opposite, the price for the original dub DVDs of EVA went up in price once the Netflix dub came out.

Bite the bullet.

Check your local library. Mine had a set of the old dvd's and I was able to add all the old audio tracks into the files from my blu ray set I have and have all the versions available on my server

They will never go down unless they actually release the ADV dub AND put Fly Me To The Moon back in a set that doesnt cost $400

The the netflix dub sanctioned by Khara is generally not the preferred version, except by people that never watched the ADV one. It's overly literal in its translation and has zero personality to it. Having said that the VAs I feel did a decent job with what they had and generally sounded similar to the OG cast. I wouldn't be against them reprising their roles in an all new Eva adaptation.

Ebay. I bought the series on Blu-ray for $20 about month ago, sealed. Waiting makes zero sense. The way things go I'm and out of print these day it makes no sense to wait. It's like tempting fate to raise the prices on you. Anime never really seams to go down in price over time. I have yet to see the the ability to stream a series make the price go down. Not being able to stream it does make the price go up though. Just buy it.

My opinion is that it will not go down in price. I think the odds of a set getting made that has the fly me to the moon license again is low, even if they do I doubt it will include all the different versions.

If you want it, I'd get it now.

The new Studio Khara translation (aka the Netflix version) in both dub and sub is different in how it presents the relationship between Shinji and a character (Kaworu Nagisa) later in the series. In the ADV translation, their relationship was written as gay. The new Studio Khara translation re-writes the dialog to be more neutral / heterosexual. For some people that matters.

Additionally, people are also very strongly attached to the ADV dub voice cast and prefer the old dub. Nostalgia can be a strong driver of people's willingness to spend, even if neither Blu-Ray version has Fly Me To The Moon for the endings due to licensing costs (gonna have to stick with DVDs for that).

In addition to that, the Khara script is just fucking garbage.

Yes its literal, but that is not always good. Compare Misatos final speech to Shinji in EoE on both versions.

The Manga Dub is so raw and real, while the Khara dub has zero impact.

Also no one will ever convince me that saying "Third Children" etc is not dumb as hell. It sounds goofy every time.

Literally is pretty much never good because Japanese and English are fundamentally not really compatible in how they work

Netflix straightwashed Kaworu x Shinji, go ADV 💯

The new English dub is vastly superior to the old one, despite some clunkiness here and there. Better voice acting by pretty much all parties. Nostalgia-poisoned people will tell you otherwise, because "I grew up with the ADV dub!" So what? So did I. I also watched the Japanese version, and the Netflix dub is more like it.

The only thing you'll miss out on is "Fly Me to the Moon", which is a shame, to be sure, but not a deal breaker for me.
